Sugar Gliders may be adorable, but there are some serious considerations you should review before deciding to purchase one.

Sugar Gliders aren’t rodents, they are nocturnal marsupials (originally from the rainforests of Australia) and require a complex and varied diet. Unfortunately pre packed diets are often not sufficient.

Sugar Gliders are incredibly social, and having just one in the house can cause emotional, mental and behavioural problems. Humans simply can’t replace the need they have for grooming and vocalizing with each other.

Sugar gliders need a very large flight enclosure, so they can glide.

Sugar Gliders need a lot of attention in order to bond with their owners and trust humans. When a non socialized Sugar Glider needs medical attention, or nail trims (important to avoid nails curling under and growing into their feet) their high stress levels and sharp teeth mean they require gas anesthesia, which is risky without a prior examination.

Lastly, not all Sugar Gliders are bred responsibly and it’s important to make sure your breeder isn’t using inhumane practices or illegal exporting.

If you’re able to put in the appropriate time and work, then owning a pair of Sugar Gliders can be very rewarding... and they sure are cute!
