An Ode to the Dog for National Dog Day, August 26, 2024

Stories abound both near and far,
of deeds performed beyond the bar.

Risking life and limb for a pat on the back,
and desiring only to call a family their pack.

Through loyal devotion a bond is created,
enriching our lives with love unabated.

Of course, I refer to the dogs in our lives,
whose purpose, it seems, is to play and contrive
of ways that keep laughter and joy alive.

With heartfelt respect we honor the dog …
a gift of love from our Creator God.

Let’s recognize the dog for all they give …
loyalty and love,
as partners we live.

Sherry and I want to offer our heartfelt thanks to all who responded to Gabriella’s Memorial post. We want each of you to know that we greatly appreciate your response and that we were moved by the number of people Gabriella touched during her life with us. We know that you believe, as we do, that dogs are not our whole lives, but they certainly make our lives whole. We will always remember Gabriella for her enormous contribution to making our lives whole.

It is with great sadness that Sherry and I announce that our precious Gabriella is no longer with us. Her heart condition had progressed to a critical point and she was telling us that it was time for her to go.

Gabi was with us for nearly 15 years. For most of her life she traveled with us as we exhibited at craft shows from Maine to Florida. She, along with her pack mates, were models for our dog harnesses at the shows. Our models were a popular attraction at each show and Gabriella was looked upon as the Princess of the Pack. Gabi was also Sherry’s Hearing Assistance Dog and a Therapy Dog.

We share this announcement because many of our customers had come to know Gabriella and we wanted to let you know that she enjoyed a full and very pampered life. We sincerely welcome any photos or comments that you would like to offer.

The following is short biography of Gabriella.

Gabriella, affectionately called Gabs or Gabi, was a fluffy white/caramel Miniature Poodle. She represented the classiness of our pack since she usually wore a distinctive Miami Cut with pom-poms on her legs and tail, a p**f on her head, and fluffy ears. Her classiness was enhanced by her intelligence and a somewhat snobby Poodle attitude, which earned her the nickname “play police”. If she thought doggie play time should be over, she would let the players know with her usual confident and gentle assertiveness. Her life motto was, “Everything is under control because Gabby is in charge”.

Gabriella was a star trick-dog; she did the usual things like jumping through a hoop and pushing a baby stroller with a Yorkie on board. She is best known, however, for walking on her two hind legs and doing a ballerina style pirouette while, of course, wearing her tutu.

Among the gifts I’m thankful for,
the life I breathe and so much more.

For thoughtful comments from those who care,
and thankfulfor loved ones whose lives we share.

The joy of living and life’s new adventures…
an exciting journey that stimulates the senses.

Of all life’s joysone deserves special mention…
the loyalty and love of a canine companion.

The bond that grows enwraps your soul,
filling emptinessand loss with a life made whole.

Sharing your need to care for another,
your canine friend is like a sister or brother.

Their love freely given is unconditional,
no sacrifice too great… a gift truly wonderful.

We thank you Lord for the gifts you have given,
among them the dog, with a lesson from Heaven…

Give your love freely and without exception,
your life will be blessed with eternal affection.

Thanksgiving is a very special holiday for every citizen of the U.S. because we celebrate our Constitutional liberties that began with the Pilgrims who arrived at Plymouth in 1620. They didn't step foot ashore from the vessels that brought them across the Atlantic until they agreed to organize themselves according to a document prepared while onboard the ship, Mayflower. That document was called the "Mayflower Compact", a document establishing a governing order by the people, for the people, and of the people. Take this Thanksgiving to remember the brave people who risked everything to begin a new life, in a new land for the opportunity to be free from oppression and enjoy the fruits of self-determination. On a lighter note, all of us at UdogU are thankful for the freedoms that we have inherited from our ancestors, but we would be remiss if we didn't thank God for the many blessings that we enjoy... including our canine companions. My poem, "Thankful for the Dog" expresses this sentiment as best as we are able.
