Got lots done today! Sheila and Little Foot got some hiding places. Feeding the second small batch of babies. The whole setup was starting to feel really messy and thrown together so I got some storage shelves for all the tanks so they’re not sitting on the floor anymore!

It’s so amazing how fast these guys can move 😮

So I've been getting a lot of questions on basic care of these guys so I'll write out a quick how to and post some links to what you need to keep one!

Axolotls need to be treated like any aquarium fish because they still have their gills and need to stay in water! They like cooler water (60-68) so there is no water heater necessary for this aquarium. They are best to be left in the tank alone or with other axolotls! NO snails.

A minimum size tank for one axolotl is 10 gallons. https://tinyurl.com/y6dkvlrv - $14.72

They don't like a lot of water current so the hang on back filters could stress them out so what I use are sponge filters. https://tinyurl.com/yyaow5mn - $5.49

You'll need to monitor the water temperature and make sure it doesn't get too hot or too cold so a thermometer is a must.
https://tinyurl.com/y5kqszlv - $0.98

Light can be really annoying for axolotls because they have sensitive eyes and don't have eyelids but having some light for plants you may want to keep in the tank or to see your little axolotl is fine. You just don't want to leave it on all day. Giving them lots of hiding places is also very important to keep these guys happy.
https://tinyurl.com/yxjovr6a - $25.09

Now axolotls can be very messy when they eat and use the bathroom and its important to keep the tank clean and to do weekly 20% water changes. Using a turkey baster to clean the messes in the tank is a very good way to keep the tank clean too.
https://tinyurl.com/y3syo63k - $4.99

A lot of axolotl owners will choose to have a bare bottom tank set up which is great for them because when they eat, they suck up everything that's in front of them and can choke on large rocks, snails, small fish and anything else they can fit in their mouth. So it's okay to have no substrate in the tank at first. However if you want plants in your tank you'll need substrate and fine sand will work with axolotls because it will slide right through their gills no problem.
https://tinyurl.com/yytwdtxd - $10.49

These guys need to eat at least once a day and they LOVE worms! Bloodworms are great for when they are young or for a snack when they're older but eventually they should be eating nightcrawlers. Sinking pellets are much easier and are also a good food source but axolotls can become bored of the same food all the time so switching it up now and then.
https://tinyurl.com/y4wahcdt - $9.99

SO there ya go all of that will get you a good start for a total of $71.75 if you're starting from scratch! It's also a good idea to check around for some used setups and that could be a lot cheaper.
