Respect your vet clinics - no matter which provider you see in the Cedar Valley.

Veterinary medicine is already a very difficult field, and the pandemic has only made it harder.

It can be hard when it's your own pet to be objective about the urgency of which they need to be seen. Call your clinic, explain what's happening, and they can triage your pet to ensure they are seen quickly (or referred to an emergency clinic) in cases of true emergency, and less urgent cases can be seen at the next available appointment.

Be kind to the staff. Vet med is a field where you do the work because you want to help pets, not because you want to make a lot of money.

Notes of thanks and yummy food are just some of the extra ways to show your thanks to your entire veterinary team. 💙

If you're not sure how your dog might handle the 4th of July, now is the time to prepare!

There are a variety of medications that your veterinarian may be able to prescribe to help, just in case, in addition to preparing background noise and a safe and secure area for your dog.

One thing to remember, though: don't ace the fear!

Learn more about why this sedative can cause further harm in fearful dogs here: https://www.drmartybecker.com/fear-free/2-things-pets-firework-fears/

Is what you’re doing to help your dog with his fireworks and thunderstorm fears making them worse? Fear of fireworks and thunderstorms can ruin a pet’s summer, but sometimes our best efforts to help our pets feel better have the opposite effect. One of the worst offenders is the drug acepromazin...

Considering a dog daycare? Not all daycares are created equal!

It's important to interview a potential daycare. Daycares that have a free-for-all environment, or those with uneducated staff, can easily lead to injuries and fights.

Check out this great article, including quotes from fellow CPDT-KA dog trainer Mandy Eakins of Manners Matter Dog Training and Daycare, LLC , for more details on what you should look for in a dog daycare.

What you should look for in a well-run dog daycare. (Hint: It's definitely not the mere presence of a whole lot of dogs running around.)

Alex will be getting married in a few months, and of course her dogs will be involved!

Their bandanas designating them as Ring Bearer and Flower Pup arrived today thanks to Simply Stitched by Kira

Have you had your dogs involved in a wedding, engagement photos, or another important life event? What helped your dogs be successful?

Hobbes and Windi will be set up for success by being involved only in a small ceremony, at a place they are familiar with already. In addition, I've designated a dog trainer friend that I trust to be responsible for the dogs during the event, to ensure they are comfortable and content even when I'm busy!

Like a true Toller, Windi is happiest when he's living his life upside down. 🐶😂🥰

Repeat after me. Muzzled dogs are NOT BAD DOGS.

Muzzled dogs have good humans.

Muzzled dogs can have more experiences because they are managed. Their quality of life is INCREASED because of the muzzle.

Muzzled dogs can still have treats.

Muzzled dogs are not miserable.

Muzzled dogs are muzzled for ALL KINDS OF REASONS. Not just aggression. Maybe they eat too much stuff off the ground and get sick. Maybe they play too rough. Maybe they over correct when startled. Maybe they want to eat squirrels. Maybe they need to learn better social skills. Not all dogs in a muzzle have a bite history, some have them on to prevent that in the first place. Sometimes the muzzle is more for the HUMAN than the DOG because it allows them to feel more confident. Big dogs, small dogs, and all breeds and sizes need muzzles sometimes. It is not a breed specific tool.

Muzzled dogs are GOOD DOGS WITH GREAT HUMANS who are setting their dog up to not fail. Judging a dog in a muzzle and their owner is the same as judging someone for wearing a helmet. They are choosing safety and being proactive and it takes WORK to get your dog to a level that they are happily working and walking around in a muzzle so kudos to the humans and dogs I work with who put that time in to better their dogs lives.

If you see a dog in a muzzle, don’t stare, don’t ask rude questions, just say “nice job, great looking dog!” And carry on. Believe me, you will have just made that humans day.

As a dog trainer, I go through quite a lot of dog treats! 🐶

To save on purchasing treats, I've recently started making my own!

This particular batch is made of flour, eggs, oil, and some leftover chicken that was pureed.

My dogs have also recently enjoyed treats made with pureed pumpkin and baby food, too!

I'm so excited to easily make a variety of flavors of treats without having to leave my home, especially when I realize last minute that we're running low on snacks.

What flavor treat would your dog choose?

We've got a new product up in the store - tug toys can now be ordered with a ball attached!

You can choose from a rubber Chuck-It Whistler ball if your dog prefers a solid ball on the end of their tug toy, or a Hol-ee roller ball in varying sizes if your dog prefers tugging on a Hol-ee roller.

What is your dog's favorite type of toy? Which ball option would your dog prefer?

Tug ropes are knotted fleece toys perfect for a game of tug-of-war, whether between a dog & owner or multiple dogs! These durable toys are soft and stretchy but wont unravel or fray. Choose between a medium Chuck-It whistler ball, 3.5 Hol-ee Roller ball, or 5 Hol-ee Roller ball for the ball

We try and get out at least once a week or so to hike with Ivy and take a meandering, sniffy, hike to let them use their brains as well as their legs.

The Story of MESSY

Hello! I’m Alex Oldenburg, CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer) and I’m the owner and lead trainer here at MESSY Dog LLC. I’ve always had a passion for dogs - one of my first words was “puppy” - and MESSY is the result of that passion.

The name MESSY actually comes from the friendships that grew out of the local 4-H Dog Project when I was training my first dog, Mya. I’ve remained close friends with many of the people I met growing up in the 4-H Dog Project, and when we were discussing what to name our venture, we wanted to include the dogs that helped build us as dog trainers.

Thus, MESSY was born: Mya, Eden, Sammy, Snickers, and tonY.

After we had settled on a name, I opened MESSY in 2016 in Mankato, MN with Antonia Langr. Together, we provided the local area with access to positive reinforcement dog trainers and built a community of wonderful and caring owners and their dogs. Antonia left the company in 2018 to pursue other interests, and I’ve been continuing what we started ever since!
