Winter activities change through more than just the weather! Many of your favorite parks and walking paths may be off-leash in the winter when they require leashes during peak use season! Other areas may be closed entirely throughout the winter to prevent soil erosion or trail ruts.
Finding new places to adventure that are appropriate to the various seasons can be tricky. If your pup is more socially selective, be sure to double-check that leash rules are still enforced this time of year! And if you are struggling to find enough room to exercise you can try private yard rentals!

Just as in summer, no matter how much our dogs love their fetch, walks, or just outdoor naps, some weather is simply too much for their well-being! So just how cold is TOO cold for your four-legged family members? Let's get into it!
Cold tolerance can be impacted by a variety of weather conditions beyond the exact degree on your weather app! While 40 degrees farenheit is generally considered a safe walking temperature for almost all dogs, if the days is heavily cloudy, windy, or there is active percipitation, your dog will feel the cold much more readily than if it is sunny, dry, and the air is still.
Beyond the environment, activity level, coat type, body condition, size, and coat color can all heavily impact how cold the temperature can be for your dog to still be comfortable! An active large dog with a thick, dark-colored, coat will maintain body temperature much more easily than a small, light colored, shorter coat dog. And dogs who are underweight for their size will feel the affects of cold more quickly than their peers who are at prime weight or overweight (although overweight is never a good thing in our pups!) Additionally, dogs who are regularly outside for considerable amounts of the day throughout the year will acclimate to the weather and tolerate lower temperatures better than dogs who go out only to go potty or for brief walks!
Knowing your dog, and their tolerance, is crucial to creating a baseline of awareness- but on any given day, you should be watching for changes in behavior when out in any extreme temperatures, and limit time outside on the coldest of days!

Winter enrichment- let's talk about making the dreary months more fun for you and your pup! This week we're going to talk about some of High Tail Heroes' favorite winter activities, as well as tips and tricks for keeping safe while doing them!
Some pups adore cold weather and would spend hours traipsing through snow if given the chance to! Outdoor adventures in the winter months can be done safely, and can be such fun! If you and your dog are winter adventurers, where do you adventure?
If you are out enjoying the snow, regardless of how long you and your pup are comfortable in the cold, watch for accumulated ice on tails, toes, or longer hairs, as these can cause serious tangles or skin damage, as well as discomfort for your pup!
To prevent these balls, there are a variety of options! Many train their dogs to walk in booties- although the fit and fabric are important considerations for traction and gait. Others use shortening or non-stick spray on the hair before going out, and some even use Vaseline (although that's worth considering that if your dog licks off the coating, Vaseline may not be the best choice.)
Additionally, remember that hydration is crucial for our dogs and us, even though it may not feel as refreshing in the cold as in the heat!

Woof, Heroes! This week has been busy busy! Hope you have a moment for coffee with your best pup in there somewhere!
Have your pups been demanding breakfast an hour earlier? Harlem and Houston sure have!
The time adjustment, the change of season, voting, has us at High Tail taking a few extra minutes to contemplate what is most important in our daily routines.
And what we’ve come up with? The dogs. Our care for them and for ourselves. And we’re so fortunate to work with clients who share that view- the way our clients care for their pups and families absolutely brings out the best in us!
“Dogs bring out the best in people, we bring out the best in dogs” and our Heroes bring out the best in us!

At High Tail we train for a wide variety of skills with our clients, and with that variety comes a range of tools! We use target pads, scent scraps, long lines, clickers, kennels, sound machines- all manner of positive reinforcement tools! But there are three things I have in any training setting! 🦮 a stop watch/clock or phone It is so easy to lose sight of progress when you’re not timing your “stay” or your “heel” or even just your session length! 🦮 poop bags… and extra poop bags I mean, duh, dog poop doesn’t harmlessly degrade, and we’re not feral enough as dog owners to leave our mess to find someone else’s shoes. PLUS I have endless stories of other unsavory items I’ve disposed of in a poop bag! 🦮 planned rewards Before you jump all over me with “I don’t want to carry treats forever” … I didn’t say treats, did I? Rewards can be toys, treats, physical affection, praise, or opportunities. But actively considering what I am asking my dog to work FOR keeps my head on straight that training is partnership, and it’s my JOB to make the work worth it for both of us! Wherever we happen to be working on home improvement- Houston will be there making a spectacle of himself 😂. “I just want my dog to not pull on the leash”SO many training relationships start out with this goal! But is that REALLY what you want as a dog owner? Just to not feel tension on the leash? More often what ‘not pulling’ is conveying is “I want to work together with my dog to enjoy our walks more with less stress and conflict- I want them to listen to me, to be calm and confident, and for both of us to get what we need from the walks together instead of suffering through it both frustrated and tired.”In this video, I talk with a client, sure. And while I’m sure I was giving great advice! 😉 But the more important communication is what you see from these two dogs!They both demonstrate awareness of where we are, and of each other calmly and voluntarily, without being dependent on tension on a leash. Meet Cash! Years ago, Cash came into the High Tail family with lots of the standard “working breed” behaviors. He pulled on leash, didn’t trust new people readily, and was HIGH energy. Cash needed mental stimulus, practice with controlled engagement, and some socialization to love life in high and low gears!
