Chugach State Park with Leo
Today Leo and I went on our last walk together before his Board & Train starts. He was excellent! We were so in tune, he was happy to see me, more than happy to go out with me and we even passed a gentleman with 2 very under control and well behaved dogs without issue.
On our way back to the parking lot, up the hill ran 2 golden retrievers, I yelled out “recall your dogs”. I heard nothing, so I called Leo to go the opposite direction so we could step off the trail and repeated to the dogs owner “recall your dogs!”. This woman had 0 control and her dogs came face to face with Leo and I. At this point I did scream “recall your f***ing dogs!”… well deserved at this point.
The dogs briefly ran back her direction and we were able yo step off the trail. The dogs came back running in front of us for a moment (video above) before finally heading back to the owner.
Once she was able to get them back she yelled at ME. “Don’t worry your mean ass dog is good”, if you turn the volume up, you can hear it at the end of the video.🙃
We were walking the Eagle River Greenbelt Access Trail, which is a part of the Chugach State Park. Which REQUIRES dogs to be leashed/under control. These dogs had no leash, no voice control, no ecollars… Leo was both leashed and muzzled. At a huge disadvantage against oncoming dogs rushing him head on which is incredibly unfair no matter their temperament.
This is the type of dog owner who gives off leash dogs a bad name. If you don’t have control of your dog, they should not be off leash I do not care if your dog is friendly. Period.
Keep your dogs under control. Leo is just as deserving to be on that trail as any other dog. Have a nice day!

Bernie the doodle in Pet Zoo
**I just now realized this only posted to Instagram last week and not Facebook!!**
I had JUST started my session at @petzooalaska with Bernie this morning and unexpectedly saw another doodle coming our way. The owner asked if they could say hi and I said YES. As a handler it is up to you to say yes or no to any kind of greeting your dog experiences.
Both dogs were expressing interest and neither dog was stressed or tense, so it was an easy yes. It’s good to show your dog that you are friendly and social. It’s good to let them experience friendly interactions on and off leash.
If the other dog is pulling at you with their eyes bulging out of their head and the owner is saying “be nice” then yeah, say no.
But I see too many recommendations on the internet to never let dogs meet on leash or never let them get pets in stores from strangers.
Bernie came to me originally as a Board & Train for nipping people, being reactive with dogs, having no recall or reliable obedience. Here he is videoed on a flexi lead with no prong or Ecollar. In a busy store, greeting a strange dog, handled by a stranger, then recalling away and being able to continue with his session. Happy I propped my phone up on a bag of dog food today!🤣 I’m getting better at recording guys!!!

I truly didn’t think that play based training would be that different. I thought I’d change a few things here and there, maybe add something I hadn’t thought of, but it would mostly be what I was already doing. I was very wrong.😅 I have completely changed just about every aspect of what I do with my own dogs as well as my client dogs and I am so happy about it. I don’t think the emotional connections and understanding have ever been stronger. The interaction and motivation you create through games is on a level. If you’re interested in play based training Private Lessons or Board & Train head to my website akpacktraining.com 🌟 📹 @akwildk9 #playbased #dalmatian
I didn’t want to work a 9-5, so I started my own business 😅
I wouldn’t want to do anything else, but man is it a 24/7 (in the most literal sense) job.
Did you get to make it outside with your dog today?😍🌞

Has Winnie earned her fun privileges for the day??
I always start the dogs with obedience on Pack Outings.
Each dog comes out individually to work on 1 or all of these things; engagement, heeling, duration, sit/down, recall, proofing.
This sets a good tone for the day and gets the dogs mentally satisfied before we start our walks/hikes/free play!
