29 days of hoof care for the month of February!

Day 13: Having a good nutrition plan in place is essential to hoof health! First and foremost, feeding quality hay and fresh water in necessary and then adding any grain and supplements around that is a good start.

Day 12: Avoid constant wet environments or often changes between wet/dry. Constant wet feet can result in cracks and breaking down of the hoof.

Day 11: Durasole is a great product for treating/preventing thrush and for hardening soles in any transition period. For example, if you pull your horse's shoes during a down period, using Durasole can help prevent the breaking down of feet that had been used to shoes.

Day 10: Bell boots should be used whenever possible for horses with shoes. Whether it is during schooling, showing or turnout, finding a pair of bell boots that fit your horse well and correctly are crucial.

Tip: The back of the bell boots need to touch the ground to prevent your horse from standing on their front shoes with their back feet- if your bell boots don't touch the ground, they are essentially useless.

Day 9: If your horse gets an abscess, Animalintex pads and movement (contrary to popular belief) will be your best friend. When using Animalintex, moisten the pad with hot water, place on foot, and wrap. If the horse is used to turn out, keep turning them out! Walking around will help the abscess move out of the foot and your horse will probably be happier too! 😁

Day 8: Shod is not always better! Many people believe that having shoes on their horse will make their feet indestructible but what they forget to remember is that horses are not born with shoes on their feet! Many things can go wrong if they lose a shoe, step on clips, etc and their feet are much more resilient than you think... consider choosing the barefoot route if you can!

Day 7: Sometimes, overdoing it with feed and supplements can be detrimental to your horse and their feet but if you are looking for an all around hoof supplement, we recommend the HoofPRO Pellets by Horse Logic. We have seen some unbelievable hoof growth and health with the help of this product!

Day 6: If your horse's shoes are drilled and tapped, it is smart to clean the stud holes out routinely to make sure dirt/rocks are not compromising them. Stud plugs can be a life saver!

Day 5: Pick out your horse’s feet daily! This one seems simple but it’s probably one of the most important. Doing so will ensure that you are getting any dirt, rocks and debris out of the feet which will help limit their chances of getting thrush. Picking feet will also allow you to check the condition of the hooves and any abnormal heat.

Day 4: There are many great hoof oils on the market to choose from to help with conditioning and strengthening the hoof- our biggest recommendation would be to pick one and stick with it on a regular basis. (We love any Absorbine Hooflex product!)

Day 3: It is important as a horse owner to make sure you have crease nail pullers and pull off tools, as well as the knowledge on how to pull a shoe off safely and correctly. You never know when an issue may arise (i.e., a horse standing on a clip) in which you would need to remove the shoe, possibly before your farrier can get there.

Day 2: It can be tempting to want to shoe your horses on a consistent time schedule (4/5 weeks) but don’t forget that it’s also okay to shoe them based on hoof growth. Your horse may be at 4 weeks from their last shoeing but they may not have much foot to justify being done just yet and waiting another week or two could be really beneficial!

February is National Hoof Care month and in honor, we are going to be doing 29 days of hoof care tips!

Day 1: Make sure you are checking your horses shoes every single day! Your farrier is only there once a month so ensuring that clinches, clips and nails are all where they are supposed to be is important. You can always send a picture to your farrier if you aren’t sure.
