Hi, Joe Reeves from WaggnTails Pet Care. As much as I enjoy caring for my customers pets during the day, coming home at night and being a foster dad is really special. We had the blessing of having Buttercup in our lives for a few weeks until she found her forever home and she changed our lives. So loving, so smart - we couldn't feel more blessed. I just had a baby!!! Well you know what I mean. Say hi to Buttercup our new foster baby - she loves being near me all the time. We'll give her all the love she can handle until she finds her forever home.

I will continue the discussion of emergency preparedness, first aid and overall health and well being for your pet(s) into the future because it is the cornerstone of our responsibility to keep them safe and healthy to the extent we can. Check out the list below on important items that should be in your first aid kit (and your dog walkers!) I won’t pass judgement on what constitutes a “good” or “bad” kit but a comprehensive kit usually has items that have been added to a store bought kit.

As a professional dog walker and pet sitter, my primary responsibility is keeping your pet(s) safe while in my care. A large part of that framework is having an Emergency Preparedness Plan in place for unforeseen events. When looking for pet care you should always ask what the company emergency plan is; if you get a glazed look you should probably move on. A professional pet care provider will have plans in place to cover the unexpected such as inclement weather, injury or sudden illness. As a pet parent, it’s important for you to have one in place as well, that way you and your provider can coordinate one comprehensive plan to care for your pet(s).

Hazardous foods for your pet – I know first hand about feeding the dog at the table. Now many of you have the proper training in place where your pet isn’t around the table at dinner time or just otherwise knows better. But I never put such barriers in place so at the slightest noise from the kitchen she would practically beat us to the table! Those sad eyes got me every time; but whether you give in to your dog and give them human food sometimes or not it’s best to know what foods are ALWAYS off limits.

Let’s talk about dog walking basics; I know it all seems like common sense. Let me tell you there are many hidden hazards waiting on dog walks, even if you are letting your dog out in the yard! I made a dog walking video and put it on my YouTube page https://youtu.be/iWpu5ahUExo for those interested but I will summarize by saying that during the Meet & Greet with prospective customers I ask to go on the same walk they take their dog(s) on so I can “preview” everything before I show up for the first service.

When my wife suggested we get a dog back in 2003 I didn’t know what to think. I wasn’t against the idea, but I had never had dogs growing up and my mind raced thinking about the dog pooping all over the house and tearing up the furniture! My wife reminds me from time to time that we had to keep Roy in the garage (he was comfortable!) for the first few days until I got rid of my anxiety. Let me fast forward real quick for those thinking I’m a monster and say NOTHING has been more important to us over these last 18 years than our dogs!
