This amazing and photogenic pup is Finny! He's working on reactivity, and he's getting some great gains so far! There is still work to be done, but he's on the right track now. And when he's not training, he gets to go on these cool adventures! Great job Finny!!

Sage here is just totally beat after some really good loose leash/reactivity training in her neighborhood. When we work our dogs behaviors, especially ones that require them to give us physical action and also requires them to think, it's a super excellent way to release some of their excess energy and help them stay calm.

As a side note, Sage totally nailed her training. So great job sage, and great job Sage's owners as well

Summer is definitely here! During the hot summer months, keep your eyes out for these terrible little things. These plants (seeds) are called foxtails.

You've probably seen them around your neighborhood, or along trails... So what makes these seeds so horrible?

Because of the shape and form of these seeds, they can easily get stuck in your dogs fur, paws, ears, nose, etc. Once they get stuck, they tend to work themselves in deeper due to their barbs! This can cause your dog a lot of grief, and if it gets too deep, or gets into your dogs eyes, nose, or paw, it can cause life threatening infections!

So after a walk, of your dog keeps chewing at their paw, swatting their eyes or nose, or if you see one of these seeds on your dog, try to remove it ASAP! If its stuck too deep, reach out to your veterinarian!

Lets keep our pups happy and safe this summer season!

I don't know how I missed posting a picture of this feisty pup before! This is Loki! He was working on reactivity, and I think he did pretty awesomely!

Working on a dog's reactivity is definitely a marathon and not a sprint. It takes monitoring body language, knowing your dog's reaction thresholds, understanding reward values, intervening at the right times to combat, etc.

Anyway, it always makes me very happy to see a reactive dog make progress (and although I won't call his owners out, I know they follow me, so a special "hope Loki is doing awesome!" shout out to them)

Copper here just having a blast at the beach. When visiting the coast, parks, or other outdoor areas, of course be sure to follow the rules regarding dogs on leashes, but, if your dogs are allowed to be off leash in a public space, I always recommend ensuring that they have an extremely solid recall.

If you know that your dog will 100% return to you when you cue them to recall, you never have to worry about them rushing off from you! And letting them off lead can be a very enriching and fun experience for our dogs (as well as a great way to drain a lot of their physical and mental energy)

This good boys name is Bolt!

When I first met him, he had to be on leash and be held by his owner. By the time we got to our last session, we had succeeded in getting to the point where we were able to walk together, and he was willing to accept treats from my hand.
I always love to see the progression in my clients amd their dog's skills, especially in cases of reactivity or aggression.

Knowing that I play a part in helping them warms my heart. Great job Bolt!

I love this analogy! I would say it is very very accurate! Keep this in mind when training your dogs!

*Hint* punishment based training is only effective when your dog things it may get in trouble for non-compliance.
If they view the reward of doing something as greater than they fear the threat of reprisal, you have a dog that may seem to be obedience, but is actually unreliable.

Dog trainer life behind the scenes... It's so easy, especially these days, to only portray things in a certain light... To create this narrative of perfection to show others. If you have trained with me, or you know me, you know that's definitely not my style. I like to keep things transparent and real.. that being said...

In this image, Zero is cradled up in my arms. I didn't ask him to come up there! Zero suffers from anxiousness, and sudden sounds freak him out. We were sitting on the couch yesterday, and some sort of sound occurred outside, Zero panicked, and jumped straight into my arms, looking for safety amd comfort.

The reason I bring any of this up is, even as a professional dog trainer, even my dogs still has issues that he is working to resolve. When working with anxious, reactive, or aggressive dogs, the training journey can be lifelong sometimes. That doesn't mean that your dog won't continue to get better, and more confident, just that sometimes it's important to keep those realistic expectations in mind.

This infographic basically nails it! Our dogs aren't going to love every dog they interact with, just like we don't always love interacting with all people. (some of us may be really extroverted, or very anti-social.. and either one is ok, but generally, most of us fall in the middle.)

If you've ever had a training consult with me, the first thing that we would discuss would be realistic expectations for training your dog.

I have found in the past that sometimes clients (or even people who aren't clients who are just trying their best to train their dogs) tend to compare themselves to other dogs behaviors, friends, family, neighbors, etc

I would like to remind everybody, that even if it seems that other dogs are better trained, more well-behaved, or seem to be progressing faster, we don't always know the real picture or story. Some dogs are really great in public and then drive people crazy at home people some dogs are totally mellow at home, and go bonkers went out on the leash. No matter what level you're at, stick with it, and you may be growing more success than you're even aware of!

How does your dog prefer to play with their toys?

Zero is what i would call "The surgeon" type.. if he gets a new stuffed toy, he will diligently find the seams, rip out the stitching, pull out all the polyfill or stuffing, and retrieve the squeaker inside (if present).
Afterwards, it's like a 50/50 split between him disregarding the toy and wanting nothing to do with it in the future, OR saving the fabric from the outside to play with in the future.

He's had this 'unstuffed toy' in the picture for like 3 years! Wild!

Whatever your dogs toy play type, I say, let them enjoy it in the way that they want (as long as they aren't swallowing the filling, of course!)

If you've done training with me before, you know I love to throw out random facts about our dogs. Here is a cool bit of information as well! (For reference, humans can hear up to around 20,000 Hz... so dogs can hear high pitched sounds that are over twice the frequency that we can hear!!)

Mind. Blown.

How well can dogs hear? You might've read that dogs have far better hearing than humans, but it’s not quite that simple.

I don't think I could honestly say I have a favorite breed. However, when meeting adorable Australian Shepherd puppies like this, it makes it very difficult not to automatically just say Aussies. It's really never too early to start on dog obedience training. The earlier we start, the greater chance we have of getting the right skills and behaviors in your pup, while preventing the bad ones from ever happening in the first place.

Dog training is a very interesting field. Researchers and behaviorists are still figuring out and are discovering new information on animal and dog behaviorism all the time. It's also a relatively new field in science.

Clients will sometimes ask me how it is that I've learned these training methodologies, and how I know so much about dog behaviorism. The photo I've posted is part of my collection of books that I have read over the years regarding this field. I'm not sure exactly how many books I've read now, but it has to be somewhere at least in the high 20s, combined with a measurable hours researching online and in scientific journals.

I don't think that I'll ever stop researching this field either, new information emerges every day, and I find it absolutely fascinating. And I love letting my clients know the latest and greatest as well.

Hope everybody's having a beautiful weekend, like follow, and share to stay tuned for the next update

It's another gorgeous day here in the Pacific Northwest, to think that everything was covered in snow and ice last week, hahaha. That's why I always recommend taking any sunny day opportunity to get your dogs out and about to drain some of that mental and physical energy. Just like being stuck inside during the winter with short days is difficult for us, it can be the same way for our pups.

Carpe diem!

What do you do when a dog loves to be outside, but doesn't love the rain, and it's a rainy day? You put them in the cutest rain jacket you can possibly find, lol.

Zeva is working on her reactivity, and her owners got her this great raincoat to help her get that outdoor time, rain or shine!
