Don't leave a bowl out for your dog to eat whenever they want! Why?
✅ It'll make your dog fat and unhealthy!
✅ It'll ruin your relationship like a spoiled kid"s relationship is ruined with their parents
✅They won't value food and will be harder to train
✅They will be unfulfilled and "act out" more from frustration and pent up energy
✅Food can create conflict and resource guarding
✅You'll miss one of the only opportunities we often have to interact directly with our dogs
✅Your dog will like their food more

It only takes a couple of minutes to feed your dog. Your convenience is not more important than your dog's well-being.

Structured play can be a powerful tool to teach your dog and build a complete and healthy relationship with your dog.

Real dog training advice. Recall is the #1 skill that can make or break your relationship with your dog. If you don't take the steps necessary to teach them how to come back to you when you call them, don't let them off-leash. All dogs can learn recall. If your dog doesn't know recall, it's because you didn't teach them. Take responsibility and put a long line on them every time you want them to have more freedom to run around, even if it's in your back yard.

Boarding is done in my house, so your dog gets the real experience and comfort of being in a home environment while you're away. Nothing beats the structure and peace of mind of your dog staying in a trainer's home, even when the dogs aren't being trained.

Have two or more dogs around the same age in one household? Train them one-at-a-time then combined. Separate them on purpose frequently to help them with separation anxiety from each other. Don't just let them get their fulfillment from each other.

The 3 D's. I don't mean the movies where you wear the weird color glasses. I'm talking about
These are the 3 things we are always working on with our dogs to get them better at obedience, more confident and progress our relationship to the next level. Even dogs who are proficient at obedience can always be improving and at least maintaining their 3D levels. Working on the 3 D's is how you begin to identify your dogs weak points and start preemptively building them up in those areas before they become crippling issues. So next time you say your dog knows how to sit or do any obedience command, make sure they can do it and hold it through the 3 D's at least at a basic level...

Neutrality! That's the goal! Even a dog that enjoys the company of other dogs should being working on being neutral to other dogs existing around them. Working on neutrality to the surrounding environment from the start is always a good choice. Real socialization and desensitization is all about neutrality!

You've heard it before: "Recall is the most important command to teach a dog". But what's often missing from that statement is recall is also the HARDEST command to teach and have consistency with, especially for pet dog owners. Don't get complacent. Always be practicing. Always be improving or your recall will go to s**t!

Happy New Year! Just a reminder to Train, Build & Explore this year!

>Train- your dog to do behaviors that will help you manage your dog, give them syructure and bring them along with you in this scary human world

>Build- a healthy relationship based on clear communication (obedience training), respect (structure, boundaries & fulfillment of natural instincts) & fun (exercise, games, engagement work)

>Explore- the world and expose your dog to new things, places and people. Bring them with you and utilize the training and relationship you've built to enjoy your dog and give them freedom to enjoy their life

Trust me, I know it's easier said than done, but always remember: teaching a dog is a process and lifestyle, not an event. If you do it, they will learn it. So get out there and work for progress not perfection! You got this!

Bosco training rituals and creating a more proactive dog in public. Set your dog up for success by preparing them for real world obedience. Don't just train in your house. Go other places and practice in the same way you would if you were home. Move away from any distractions that are too overwhelming but don't avoid them all together. Like anything in dog training and life... it's a balance. Consistency and persistence will deliver results. If you do it. They will learn it. That goes for the bad stuff too 😘

Don't just train tricks. Training your dog to do tricks can be fun but it's only useful at parties to entertain the guests for a half second. Training your dog to do more practical behaviors should be and can be fun too! So, save the party trick training for after your "real" training. You'll be doing yourself and your dog a favor later 😘

Here I'm working with two of my day academy super stars first Rincon then Bosco on a variety of "real world" practical behaviors. I make it fun for me and the dogs by setting up a mini obstacle course. And this is only the most basic of courses. You can easily add a few place beds, a threshold or any other obstacle that would help you practice to reach your training goals with a little more fun and structure. To spice it up even more and only when the dog is ready, add in some distractions like balls flying, loud noises or other dogs to challenge you and them to progress more. In the video there was a neighbor dog off screen that was barking which added a perfect distraction for these two. They handles it like pros🤙

22/11/2021

"Slow it down exercise". Ironically this video is fast 😃

The video shows me working with the wonderful Rincon on refining his heel and general focus on the handler. By slowing down the pace to a crawl, it forces the dog to pay attention and gives you (the handler) the opportunity to point out to the dog exactly (with leash pressure) when they are making a mistake as well as make it obvious (with verbal reward and occasionally treats) when they are doing things right. By strengthening their understanding of the behaviors we like and don't like, we are empowering them to make better decisions and have more success in public. This same "slow it down exercise" should be practiced in those public and high distraction environments
