You might remember, Yargo graduated from training a few weeks ago after suffering from some major reactivity. He’s been doing great everywhere except in his neighborhood with his nemesis, what we call that one dog that your pup has a hard time getting along with. They had never been able to meet or play because Yargo had such a negative, scary reaction to him with lots of lunging and barking. After shutting down Yargo’s initial negative reaction, We spent some time walking neutrally with them together in their neighborhood until we felt comfortable that they could meet. We brought some other stable dogs to set the tone. Their meeting went really well and soon the entire group was running and playing! Yargo’s family had feared he would never be able to make friends with the neighbor’s dog but now they will be able to take peaceful walks together!
Don’t give up on your dog or a goal you have! With the right guidance, tools, and coaching your life and your dog’s could be so much bigger!!

Well, finally some good news to report! On our very last class of the show, we finally won!! What’s even more fun about this win is that it was in an “English Challenge Class.” Basically that’s a super hard pattern combining elements of Hunt Seat Equitation and trail. It included two point in extended trot over poles, quick change to posting over more poles, serpentine over more poles, dropping stirrups and finishing the remaining posting, side pass and backing that way! If you’re not a horse person, this may sound like gibberish but if you are, you know!
The very best part of this final, crazy fun / hard class was the amazing group of women willing to put themselves out there, give it a go and cheer for every single person! What a blast! Thanks to for throwing in these fun challenge classes and for putting on such a well run show!

Let me start by saying that working with animals will keep you humble! First day of the APHA Western Nationals in Las Vegas for us got started with three classes. That’s a lot for one day for both me and Eddie! First up, trail with about 37 competitors in our category. Eddie was a good boy, very calm despite the noise from the bowling alley over our heads! Only ticked two poles but I misguided him a bit in the back through. Competition is very good so if you are not 110%, you are out!
Next up, horsemanship; we were having a beautiful go when he decided he didn’t want to turn away from the other horses. Momentary argument between the two of us and we were out of the running, again!
And finally our last class was called a “Challenge “ class. It combines elements of pleasure, trail and horsemanship in one pattern. Once again, things started out well until Eddie decided he needed to scratch his knee, right now!
When your partner is an animal, it’s important to keep a sense of humor and remember that no one is winning a gold medal here! It’s about fun and connection with your horse. Growing as a rider / handler, doing your best but not taking it all too seriously.
Whether working with a horse or a dog, give them grace, take responsibility for your part of the failure, whatever that may be, and keep working towards your goal. It might be competition related or something as simple as having a peaceful walk without barking at other dogs. Our guidance and direction plays a huge role in the outcome, good or bad. Today is a new day for us all and I for one will be starting with a clean slate!

We love getting updates on our grads!

“Hi Bernadette, I took this picture of Loki today while playing with him and I thought you might like to see how all of the work you put into training him and helping us manage him has played out.

He’s a happy guy and still  needs to be managed… but you’ve helped us learn how to do just that.
Thank you for what you do.”
