Moose came to us with a long list of problem behaviors, all rooted in his fear and anxiety. Moose was very shy and fearful of new people and other dogs. He was leash reactive and would sometimes redirect on his mom, dad or brother.
During his three week stay in our:
🐾Total Behavior Reboot program, Moose built his confidence around other dogs by socializing with our balanced pack.
🐾dialed in his obedience
🐾 developed his self control
🐾 learned to trust his handler
🐾 and a host of other import life skills that have helped him to move through the world calmly!
Here’s what his mom has to say now that he’s home.
“Did some off leash work with “free command” and “come” this morning with Moose. He stayed pretty close by and checked in multiple times with me. He is doing great on leash around people and dogs and we were able to take him to HomeDepot and Petsmart this weekend! overall is a much more confident dog!”

We handle a lot of difficult cases and we love helping those dogs but training puppies is still our favorite! It’s easy to see why when you meet this little cutie! Carlos is joining us for our Puppy Head Start Program because his family knows how important the first four months of life are for every puppy! During this time puppies are incredibly impressionable and their brains are little sponges building new neural pathways. It’s so important to ensure your puppy gets off on the right paw with proper socialization and training! Here we share a quick training tip for teaching lesson #1, name recognition!

Let me start by saying that working with animals will keep you humble! First day of the APHA Western Nationals in Las Vegas for us got started with three classes. That’s a lot for one day for both me and Eddie! First up, trail with about 37 competitors in our category. Eddie was a good boy, very calm despite the noise from the bowling alley over our heads! Only ticked two poles but I misguided him a bit in the back through. Competition is very good so if you are not 110%, you are out!
Next up, horsemanship; we were having a beautiful go when he decided he didn’t want to turn away from the other horses. Momentary argument between the two of us and we were out of the running, again!
And finally our last class was called a “Challenge “ class. It combines elements of pleasure, trail and horsemanship in one pattern. Once again, things started out well until Eddie decided he needed to scratch his knee, right now!
When your partner is an animal, it’s important to keep a sense of humor and remember that no one is winning a gold medal here! It’s about fun and connection with your horse. Growing as a rider / handler, doing your best but not taking it all too seriously.
Whether working with a horse or a dog, give them grace, take responsibility for your part of the failure, whatever that may be, and keep working towards your goal. It might be competition related or something as simple as having a peaceful walk without barking at other dogs. Our guidance and direction plays a huge role in the outcome, good or bad. Today is a new day for us all and I for one will be starting with a clean slate! #aphawesternnationalchampionships #coloradodogtrainer #boulderdogtrainer
Meet Smokey! This five year old shepherd mix came to us with a serious lack of socialization! At 112 pounds, his size made this very difficult for his family! Smokey would bark and pull towards other dogs, taking his petite owner off her feet. They would love for him to play nicely and come when he’s called so he could have off leash privileges.
Smokey is with us now for his two week boarding school training and working each day with our pack. Kiera is trying desperately to make friends with him and he’s getting more comfortable every day! Pack work is the best medicine for dogs with reactivity.

Leash reactivity is the most common behavior issue we get into training. Yargo was a perfect example of both on and off leash reactivity when he arrived. He’s a one year old gorgeous German Shepherd who had not had good socialization early in life. Here’s a behind the scenes breakdown of how we work a dog through fear and reactivity. Shoot us a dm if you need help with your reactive dog.

Every so often we get a dog into training whose person has horses too. One being a prey animal and the other a predator, they don’t always get along perfectly. Riva’s mom has a horse and wants to ensure that she can behave politely at her barn and when she’s riding in the mountains. Since we have horses and ride ourselves, it’s easy to incorporate this work into our training. Riva was a little worried at first but soon realized the horse was calm and under control and that there was nothing to worry about. I’m excited for all the fun opportunities she will have ahead of her now that she’s comfortable with her horse friends.

Oskar is a one year old German Shepherd who came to us with a lot of reactivity. He’s very wary of strangers and has already bitten one person. When he arrived for training, he was very standoffish with us and we had to handle him very carefully. Our first video showcased how we helped him to get comfortable with us so we can start working with him. If you haven’t seen that video, please check out the earlier reel. On day two, see how we remove the muzzle and build more of a bond with Oskar. #boulderdogtrainer #boulderdogs #coloradodogtrainer #bouldercolorado #blackpawdogtraining #dogtraining #leashreactivity
