According to the Merck Veterinary Manual
Causes for anxiety are:
Fear, separation, and aging.
Although Fear and separation are anxieties that we see often through all dog breeds and all ages, let's talk about the anxiety that comes with aging.
Anxiety in older dogs is often a result of cognitive decline or Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD) with loss of senses and mental sharpness; older dogs may become more easily scared, startled, or nervous.
What is CCD? Well basically CCD is like dog Alzheimer's disease. The brain gradually degenerates which then leads to abnormal and senile behaviors. Most common in dogs older than 9 years old.
CCD is present in 25% of dogs in ages 11 to 12 years of age and in 70% of those in ages of 15 to 16 years of age..
Sadly, there's no cure for this degenerative disease, but adding natural ingredient supplements can help decrease symptoms and the stress and anxiety associated with the disease.
