Not just a frog, but a toad!
We are so grateful to be have this guy in our collection! This species of toad, Atelopus balios, is also known as the Rio Pescado stubfoot toad.
These small toads are endemic to the tropical lowland rainforests of Ecuador and were once thought to be extinct. However, during a hunt for lost amphibians in 2011, a single specimen was discovered.
Their species remains critically endangered and continues to decrease. They face active significant threats from agriculture, aquaculture, wood harvesting, pollution, as well as chytrid fungus.
