While working on Winx, we focused on specific muscle work for the body, aiming to improve the range of motion in the back legs.
The Sartorius muscle flexes the hip, extends and flexes the stifle, and contributes to hindlimb adduction and protraction.
The Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL) works with various muscle groups to aid in the movement and stabilization of both the hip and the knee. This muscle works with the gluteal muscles to internally rotate and abduct the hip.
A couple things to look for when it comes to a strained Sartorius muscle is
•Weakness and tenderness in the muscles of the inner thigh.
•Pain felt in the groin area.
•Uncomfortable or pain whilst resting.
•Pain when trying to lift the knee.
•Inability to use the muscle at all.
If you notice any of these symptoms, consult with a vet before scheduling a canine massage. While canine massage is beneficial for preventive and recovery healthcare, it is not a substitute for veterinarian care. It's important to be informed.

Meet Grimsby… Another pup is available at @almostthererescue. He had the zoomies the whole massage, but that’s ok. Canine massage is tailored to what the dog will allow. Sometimes, they will allow 30 min, 45 min, up to an hour. Sometimes, they will only allow 10 min. As you can tell, towards the end, he was getting restless and started nipping at my hand. Not because he was aggressive but because he was ready for me to stop touching him. As a Canine Massage Therapist, you must know when to end the massage before the dog gets agitated. You must be aware of their body language and cues. I enjoyed all 15 min of this massage.
As you can tell, he is active and likes to jump. So today, I focused on his hip muscles (Glutes, Longissimus Dorsi, TFL, iliopsoas). This will keep him jumping and active for a long time, helping to avoid future hind leg issues.
One thing about Almost There is they give in-depth details about the dog’s personality and characteristics before adoption. Before the massage, the staff went over everything I should be aware of and things to avoid doing not to frustrate Grimsby. I don’t believe it’s right for a dog to be returned to the rescue because adopters ignore details. Unfortunately, Grimsby was. He is a fantastic dog and very energetic. If you need someone to help get you in gear daily, I suggest checking out @almostthererescue to see if Grimsby is a good fit!

Today we started our partnership with Almost There Rescue, donating time and massage to rescues that could use some TLC. 💙
I had the pleasure of working with Mia this afternoon. A very loving pitbull mix that was unfortunately returned back because she stood 10 toes down when it came to standing on business. We vibed for about 30 minutes. She let me work on her whole body and took a liking to hind leg stretches.
Her body language was very friendly the whole time. As you can tell she was super relaxed and very comfortable with the body work she was receiving. Touch can help socialize dogs and assist with training when it comes to meeting new people. If you are looking for a really good dog, Mia is available. 🐶

While giving a massage to Hussle, I violated a cardinal rule. “Never force a dog to do something they dont want to”. Because Hussle has Hip Dysplasia in his right hip, I wanted him to turnover so I can massage that side. I tried to force him over, and in return he snapped at me. This, however, is not his fault. As a canine practitioner, I should’ve been more aware of his body language. Take what the dog will give you and do the best you can with what you got.
Fortunatley I learned my lesson with my own dog, rather than learning that lesson with a clients dog.

When doing a canine massage it’s important to do evaluations prior to the massage. Gum and neck hydration checks are important as well as limb evaluations, to see if there are any areas of concern the dog is not communicating. Once you do your evaluation, you can draw up a treatment plan to take care of anything that needs to be addressed.
