TROPICAL SYSTEM MAY DEVELOP IN EASTERN GULF; UNCERTAINTY INCREASES... Uncertainty, unfortunately, has increased surrounding the future path of the tropical wave currently located near the northern Lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico. Uncertainty has also increased as to exactly when this system may ultimately develop into a named tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center continues to indicate this evening there is a 60% chance of this system becoming a named tropical storm over the next 5-7 days. Some scenarios bring the system uncomfortably close to our region in about a week, but it remains too soon to say whether local impacts will be a real possibility.

TROPICAL WAVE NEAR THE NORTHERNMOST LESSER ANTILLES THIS EVENING... This Wednesday evening features a cluster of showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave axis moving through the northernmost Lesser Antilles near the U.S. Virgin Islands. This system will bring heavy rain to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti over the next day or so. Rain is likely in Jamaica and across parts of Cuba, the Turks & Caicos islands, and The Bahamas on Friday into Saturday. The overall environment is not favorable for tropical storm development through Friday, but this weekend is a different story. The tropical disturbance will be moving into an environment that is more favorable for development when it is near the western Bahamas, southern Florida, and western Cuba.

BIGGEST QUESTION: WHEN & WHERE DOES A LOW-LEVEL CENTER FORM?... Today was, unfortunately, exactly what we did not want to see in that uncertainty surrounding the future of this system has increased instead of decreasing. This is because the major global weather models do not have the best grasp on the strength of the subtropical ridge of high pressure (centered near Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean) that will be the ultimate "driver" of this developing tropical system. In addition, models generally struggle somewhat until a tropical system has a well-defined low-level center of circulation. We're looking ahead to Saturday and Sunday when this tropical wave will "congeal" or consolidate into more of an organized system. That may happen when the system is near The Bahamas, the coast of Cuba, the Florida Keys, or even in the northern Caribbean Sea near Cuba. Where the system actually gets its act together will have huge implications on where the system ultimately ends up. If the northern end of the tropical wave organizes, it would likely be more of a threat for the East Coast of the U.S. whereas if a low-level center forms in the Florida Straits, the Panhandle or western part of the Florida Peninsula could be at a greater threat level. There is even an off chance that the low-level center forms in the Caribbean Sea.

LOCAL IMPACTS ASSESSMENT - ALABAMA & N.W. FLORIDA... It remains too early to know whether this system will impact Alabama or northwest Florida directly. Yesterday and early this morning, the trends were quite positive in suggesting the system may remain farther to the east. That trend, unfortunately, was reversed significantly today as much more uncertainty has been injected into the potential range of outcomes due to model guidance again being "all over the board." The most concerning outcome I am seeing right now is a messy, extreme rain system that could bring excessive rain and flash flooding to parts of Florida, Georgia, or Alabama if that scenario materialized. This would be because of steering currents all but collapsing in 7-10 days, thus bringing a significant flood threat. Problem is - there is ZERO confidence in suggesting where that would happen. The best case scenario is the system develops earlier in this process, moves entirely east of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean and ultimately turns out to sea. That IS still a possibility. The truth of what happens probably is somewhere in the middle of those best and worst case scenarios. Big takeaway here for all folks in Alabama and northwest Florida - please check back for more updates in the days ahead.

When a dog gets to old age, they often sadly become blind and deaf. 😔
Most of the time their nose still works as great as ever though!
This is were a fun sniffing game comes in handy for some stimulation! 🤩

Instead of just giving your dog a treat, why not try leaving small pieces scattered around a safe, well known environment (last part is super important for blind dogs!!!)?
Your dog will have so much fun sniffing them out! 🎉

In general, all dogs are individual with their own needs and preferences, but sniffing activates and exercises the brain and can make them feel just as tired as after a fast-paced walk. 🥳

Regardless if your dog is young or old, it’s something fun for them and it can really help you out on days when you might not have time for a longer walk or play session.

Make it more challenging for dogs with vision and hide treats or just their kibble where they can’t see it right away.

For people, the 4th of July can mean fun, food, friends and fireworks, but for our pets, it can be one of the scariest days of the year! Make July 4th holiday a whole lot better for your furry friends by following these steps for a stress free day for both you and your animals.

🚨Prepare for the worst-case scenario.
July 4th is a great annual reminder to be prepared in case your pet escapes or gets lost. If your pet is not wearing a collar with an ID tag, now is the best time to get one. You’ll also want to double check that your pet’s microchip registry is connected to the correct name and your current phone number and address. You can also find resources on what steps to take in case your pet is lost, check local shelters, and create a poster for your lost pet.

🚨Avoid the crowds.
Avoid bringing your pup to crowded events, parades, and other gatherings with a lot of commotion or people. A combination of heat, loud noises, packed spaces and scorching blacktop can not only be stressful, but harmful to your pet’s health. Better to leave them at home in a cool spot with lots of water. It’s especially wise to avoid bringing your pets to firework events, as they could panic and try to run.

🚨Wear them out.
Be sure to give your pets lots of exercise during the day, so they’ll be a little worn out before the scary noises start at night. A nice long run or play session during the daytime will help with your pet’s overall stress and anxiety levels. Some pets may sleep right through the night time celebrations!

🚨Head indoors before the fun begins.
Don’t wait for the fireworks to be in full swing before taking care of your pet. It’s best to bring him or her indoors or put them in a cozy spot well ahead of the first boom of fireworks. Which brings us to…

🚨Create a safe space. Prepare a safe, escape-proof space in your home. Lower the blinds, close the windows, provide a bed or crate where they feel comfortable, offer a special chew or toy to distract them and turn on the TV or radio to help muffle the noises outside.

🚨Wrap them up.
Confining movement in dogs and cats actually has a calming effect on them, which is why you might want to consider an anti-anxiety wrap or also called a “thunder shirt.” In a pinch, you can even create one from a scarf.

🚨Give them a chill pill. If you’re really worried about a pet who stresses easily, talk to your vet as soon as possible about anti-anxiety chews, drops or other remedies that can help your pet relax. There are plenty of prescription and homeopathic solutions out there that can help your pet get the extra dose of relaxation that he or she needs.

With the 4th of July fast approaching, I wanted to remind everyone to please keep your animals safe!!!

🚨DO NOT leave them outside unattended and/or unleashed. Even at times when you do not expect fire works just yet, you know there are always some folk who get over excited!!
🚨 DO make every effort to have a form of ID on your pet. Be sure they wear a collar!!!
They don’t need a last minute bath which let you to take off the collar. It’s not uncomfortable for them when they are trying to sleep. THEY ARE FINE!!!!!!!
An ID Ican be as simple as the DIY ID below!
All you need is some sort of tape (Painters tape, Duck tape, even clear tape will work), permanent marker & a collar.

Step one: Tear a piece of tape off.
Step two: Line it up vertically to your collar
Step three: Stick both ends of tape together. The collar should be stuck between both ends.
Step four: Write name and phone number on tape
Step five : Be sure any left over sticky areas are cut off or folded over so they can’t stick to fur
Step six: Attach collar to your animal
Step seven: DO NOT TAKE COLLAR OFF UNTIL JULY 8th! JUST IN CASE!!!!!

Sadly Patty has not had the best life so far. At only 2 years old, she’s had two litters of puppies and spent 1 year at the pound! 😞
Thank the lord for people like her foster dad, who pulled her from the shelter not long ago. 🎉
Her foster dad would like her to become a foster failure and I’m doing my best to help with that. 🥰
Together we are working hard to teach her manners and get the wriggles out! 🤪
