This summer session has been about learning skills out of the saddle! The past 2 weeks focused on leading and tack. We played a matching game to learn our horse’s tack and why each piece is important. Then a small obstacle course for riders to practice their leading skills.

Today, as we dodged puddles and raindrops, we made new friends and found silver linings. Today as we let go of fears and anxieties, we replaced them with strength and confidence. Today was a good day. Thank you Operation Red Wings Foundation for allowing us to share the healing power of horses with others. ♥️🐴♥️🐴

Week 2 was full of fun activities! Learning parts of the horse with foam stickers, and spending time outside reading with our horses. ✨🐴📚

From the moment we greet our horse in the field, to grooming and working in the round pen, the horse-human bond and connections are established. It was a beautiful day in North Carolina with blue skies and low humidity to work on strengthening those bonds and allowing ourselves to let go of daily stresses and anxieties. We kicked off our summer session this week!!☀️ Coming back from break, we spent extra time on grooming and learning what each brush should be used for.

Every day is a special day, filled with extraordinary surprises and special moments. Prancing Horse loves sharing its stories; however, today was different for us. We received the sad news that one of our amazing supporters – Heather Merrell - unexpectedly passed on Monday. Heather leaves behind her loving husband, two young boys, and a cherished sister. She created a legacy of compassion and grace, her passion was helping others, and it brought her tremendous joy.

Heather was an incredible supporter of Prancing Horse and did so in a special way. A lifelong horsewoman, she identified horses that she felt would be well suited for our therapeutic horsemanship program … and her instincts were always spot on. One of the first horses she sent our way was Toby, a beautiful chestnut gelding found abandoned on the side of the road which Heather quickly took ownership of. Toby was with Prancing Horse for several years, helping our therapeutic horsemanship clients and veterans find their way. Heather truly understood our needs and enlisted her sister, India, to help with her quest for the perfect unicorn. India brought to us two very special horses, Sully and Fergie, long favorites at our farm and who have since retired.

Our 2023 Horse of the Year, Stuart, was also brought to us by Heather. Stuart changed the lives of so many of our clients and was committed to us heart and soul. He was the perennial favorite and set the standard for other members of his herd to live up to. We cannot thank Heather enough for introducing us to this special, one-eyed Haflinger who left an indelible impression on the lives of everyone he crossed paths with. We truly believe that there was a little bit of Heather in each horse she sent our way as evidenced by the dedication, care, and commitment they exhibited.

Thank you to everyone who came out today! Volunteers and Operation Red Wings and horses came together to practice relationship building skills. The nonverbal communication horses provide gives their human partner a chance to learn more about themselves and share a bond. It’s always a wonderful Thursday here at PH! ❤️

For 40 years, Prancing Horse has changed lives through the power of horses, by providing a safe environment for therapeutic horsemanship.

Last year alone, through our Therapeutic Horsemanship and Freedom Reins (military) programs, we were able to serve 245 men women and children. No one is ever turned away for inability to pay.

From meeting their horse in the field for the first time, to learning to lead in the arena, grooming, and round pen work we had a great day with the Soldier Recovery Unit - Fort Liberty!

Love was in the air today at Prancing Horse with our couples groups from Operation Red Wings Foundation!
Our horses demonstrated love for our new friends as they literally crossed through water in the round pen to join up and make meaningful connections. It was a great day! 🐴♥️🐴♥️

Prancing Horse is hosting another volunteer training on Monday, May 20. If you are interested in attending, please reach out via [email protected]. You need only attend one time (10 am or 3 pm) and this will last about an hour. We will have lessons this summer so there will definitely be opportunities to volunteer!

Last week was horse show time and we had the BEST time celebrating all of our riders!! They were so proud to show off all their horsemanship skills and be applauded for their efforts. This was a wonderful way to showcase why we do what we do and how everyone has come. The horses were on their best behaviors and the weather was perfect. We couldn’t have asked for a better week. ☀️🏅

A special thank you to Kathy for her new book ‘Lulu and Ed’ that all the riders received. The horses were super into it 😜
