Ode to Odin, Buddy and Snowflake’s Journey- Home

Please join us on our Journey across the Country as we make our way Home to Avalon and our new family. And then they saw Odie’s tail wagging. A true hero.

It was October 2017 when the California wildfires raged and an 11 month old Great Pyrenees named Odin refused to leave his goats. Over 90,000 people were forced to evacuate, 8,900 buildings and 245,000 acres were destroyed. With the fires advancing at a rate of a football field every three seconds, Odin’s owners, Roland and Ariel Hendel, had precious little time to pack their car with their animal

s. They managed to load Tessa, Odin’s sister, in the car but Odie sat and refused to move. He gave a look of “I’ve got this,” and Roland knew there was no way he could get him to leave his goats. They drove away, not knowing if they would see their home, Odie or their livestock again. When they returned the next day, their house had been completely destroyed. But in the distance they could make out the little black, brown, and white dots of the goats. In disbelief, they sobbed tears of joy. What a miraculous dog. A few weeks ago, Odin passed away suddenly from what was thought to be a brain aneurysm. Avalon Woods lost their heroic and beloved guardian they had rescued as a puppy. 5 year old Tessa is grieving the loss of her bother. It’s time for her to retire from her duties as livestock guardian as she has always preferred watching over her family and will be happy doing just that. Roland and Ariel only have rescue animals at Avalon Woods and that’s the way it will always be. Deciding on Buddy and Snowflake, Ariel said their personalities and their bond as a working team reminded them of how Odin and Tessa were together. In Odin’s memory, we are donating our own Buddy and Snowflake, a 4 year old bonded pair who will take over guardian duties, doing what they were born and bred to do. In order to accomplish this monumental task of transporting Buddy and Snowfake 1,800 miles from Missouri to Northern California, we really need your help. Donations are needed for travel expenses including gas and lodging for Buddy and Snowflake’s handler and one other GP Rescue of Missouri volunteer. We also have dogs that will need to be boarded at a cost of $200 per day while Buddy and Snowflake are transported and transitioned onto the farm with goats, chickens, wild horses, and one sheep. We estimate needing $3,000 for all expenses. We are so honored and blessed to be a part of Odin’s legacy. Help us keep Odin’s memory alive. Meet our new boy Pierre. He was surrendered to us at 11 weeks old due to aggression. Also, Rescues and shelters around the country are overwhelmed with an unprecedented number of dogs being surrendered. What can we do to stop the cycle? Roman will be here to try to help us figure out if there is anything we can do. This is going to be a good show.

Meet Gyda. She is one of the Viking Litter puppies that came into rescue on November 20, 2021.
Born September 1st, 2021, Gyda is a true Viking, she beat parvo. Although Gyda is spoken for, her siblings will be available for adoption after Christmas.

Meet Honeybee. A backyard breeder convinced Honeybee‘s owner to adopt two large dogs, but they were just more than she could handle. We think Honeybee is an Akbash/Anatolian mix. Honeybee is as sweet as she can be and her foster mom says she is a calm and laid-back girl. She loves to be with her people and give you her paw. Honeybee isn’t alone in what happened to her.
How do we prepare to adopt a breed like this? What if something happens, do you have a backup plan for your dog? We’re going to address this on the show, and make some suggestions.

Meet Gyda. She is one of the Viking Litter puppies that came into rescue on November 20, 2021. Born September 1st, 2021, Gyda is a true Viking, she beat parvo. Although Gyda is spoken for, her siblings will be available for adoption after Christmas. Are you curious about fostering with our rescue?
