Sharing Is Caring ❤️🚐

The SDTA was founded on the premise of cultivating rescue partnerships so that our life-saving efforts could be maximized. It was also founded on supporting each other in rescue, as the need is too great for an individual shoulder to bear 🤝

Out of this spirit, we’ve been working to support a start up transport program out of Eastern Kentucky. They had a vision similar to ours, they just needed a roadmap and a little push to get there 👊

They’ve already cranked out one big transport in January, and now today are on their way with another! If you’re able, give them some love and encouragement by liking their page and following today’s transport 🚐 ❤️ Sharing is caring!

This gentle soul was found last week on the side of a freeway, covered in snow and ice, unable to move. He was known in the community as a stray, but since all local shelters and rescues were full, he had to wait until room was had. With no safe place to go, Brody eventually succumbed to the dangers so many strays face and was hit by a car 😞

As he was whisked away early this morning to a medical rescue North, I watched the lights of his plane flicker amongst the remaining stars of the dawn sky. As his plane faded in the distance, I found myself wishing upon every single one of those stars…that we’ll one day find a way to ensure suffering like this comes to an end.

Until then, Godspeed Brody ✈️❤️ and prayers of protection for all those awaiting shelter 🙏

On The Road Again…AND Again 🚐 🐾 🚐

Shout out to Hunter and Caramel who just landed in NH!!! These 2 drove straight through the night safely transporting 45 souls (mostly kitty cats 🐱) to their forever homes…

AND KEEP ON TRUCKING Lucretia with her trusted navigator Nikki, who are about 3 hours out from Buffalo, NY. When our air transport got cancelled due to weather, we packed the 4Runner and decided we’ll just drive ‘em up 👊

The SDTA is blessed with several road warriors, like these two, who leave the comforts of their home—driving through wind, rain or snow, just so we can have enough space at our shelters to bring in more. With life-threatening temps about to come our way, ALL that we do matters right now 🙏
Godspeed you two ❤️

Team Sugar 🐶

Sugar and her newborns were scheduled to catch a rescue flight out of Asheville tomorrow ✈️ However, as the snow started falling this morning it became clear that getting Sugar from a rural shelter to us soon would be impossible due to the storm 🌨️❄️

Knowing that a shelter is no place to raise a family, a group of rescuers decided Sugar wasn’t gonna miss her freedom flight! And so they kicked it in 4WD rescue style and brought us Sugar and her little ones right before the roads became impassable 👊 AMAZING work ladies!!!

Mom and pups are now safe and sound, staying the night near the airport, courtesy of hotel Mountain Pet Rescue Asheville 😘

Tune in tomorrow to see where Sugars rescue journey takes her next…all we told her was to pack some sunscreen and to leave all her cares behind 💙

TRANSPORT tonight, Thursday Jan. 9th 6-7:15pm at Crossroads Asheville 🚐🐾!!!

Now more than ever we HAVE to make space at our shelters so our most vulnerable can be brought in to safety and warmth. We run transport when we're needed most, and right now its simply too cold for those without shelter!

Please bundle up and help us send off 60 plus shelter animals North. We're going to need dog walkers, puppy minders, as well as kitty sitters. We’ll also need help with set up and loading of the van. It takes an army of compassionate people to send off a transport this large, so let's do this for our shelters 👊

*Set up begins at 5:15 20 S. Bear Creek Rd. in Asheville. Please comment in the section below if you can make it ⬇️

A New Years greeting from The SDTA 🐾💙

For years now the rescue world has been in crisis ever since the pandemic, however, when Hurricane Helene hit WNC just a few months ago, the term crisis was brought to an entirely different level. Although many are relieved that 2024 is now behind us, equally many of us are entering this New Year strengthened and encouraged by the outpouring of kindness, generosity and love for one another demonstrated in the aftermath of Helene. Although the physical footprint of its damage is still very real, and will be for some time, the spirit of determination, community and hope will surely walk us through our recovery.

The SDTA was founded over 4 years ago with this same spirit in mind. We greet crisis by buckling down, determined to do the work in front of us. Simultaneously, we open ourselves up to community, whether it be in the North or South, knowing that strength lies in unity. Finally, we are driven by hope. Refusing to be discouraged by the reality we see before us, we believe in our capacity to transform realities beyond us.

Yes, in 2025 the need will still be great, the crisis still real. But great is our love for one another, and real is our dedication to all in need of rescue ❤️

Thank you for your continued support of this program. Please take a moment to see hope transformed in the comments section below 🙏

Happy New Year and Blessings to All,

Natasha Kush
Executive Director

The SDTA is excited to announce that we’re ONLY one transport away from 10,000 lives saved!!!

Who would have believed that an all-volunteer, local transport program founded at a small county shelter 4 years ago could have achieved such a thing 🙏

We’ve got 2 upcoming transports planned for the New Year to make it all happen, one air ✈️ and one ground 🚐 (this Saturday). Stay tuned for more details!

In the meantime, here’s a few things you can do:

SHARE this post in celebration of what can be accomplished TOGETHER in rescue!

DONATE if you’re able so we can keep this life-saving program available to all our shelters and rescues in need (link in the comments)!

Finally, take a guess at which of these 4 deserving shelter animals gets to be that lucky number 10,000 🫶🐾

Shelter Dog Tranport Alliance

The shelter dog transport alliance is a partnership of several Western North Carolina county animal shelters working together to ensure every shelter dog gets a second chance at life. A recent study by Best Friends Animal Society has North Carolina ranked #3 for the highest shelter euthanasia rate, behind only California and Texas. In order to tackle this statistic we are currently partnering with several animal rescues in the North to relocate our dogs to safety and into loving homes when our shelters become critically full.

We decided to initiate this transport program because we never want to have to euthanize any of our shelter dogs because we simply don’t have a place for them. Further, we need to reduce overcrowding in our shelters so that we always have room to compassionately care for abandoned or neglected animals. Because of space limitations, many of our shelters has waitlists for people wanting to surrender animals. This has sadly led to the regular practice of individuals ‘dumping’ helpless puppies, elderly animals, or animals that are simply unwanted by roadsides or empty fields.

Our ultimate goal is to save lives, however, as we do so we are simultaneously working towards addressing the root causes that lead to our shelters being overcrowded. The Shelter Dog Transport Alliance is a life saving partnership that will not rest until our State is no longer a deadly statistic.
