Despite the immeasurable loss our Asheville River Arts District experienced due to the hurricane, our rescue family at Philip DeAngelo Studio in the RAD still chose to keep our shelter animals in mind this Holiday season ❤️ 💚

Our transport program is a free service made available to all of our county shelters and rescues. We’re able to ensure it stays free because our community is built on compassion, hope and love for one another (2 and 4 legged) 👊

To all the local artists who contributed to this fundraiser, thank you from all of us at the SDTA🐾🐶

Me: Now Tippy what did I tell you would happen when you step on that magic rescue bus?

Tippy: Stop! You’re totally gonna make me cry…

So it only took 6 rescue drops, 19 hours and over 1,000 miles to get 40 shelter pups where they needed to be, but if you want my honest opinion, I would have done it all just for this one ❤️

TRANSPORT Tonight ~ Almost Home Fur The Holidays 🚐🎄🐾

This gentle senior spent his entire life either tethered outside, or left to roam on his own. Neighborhood kids would cruelly tease Tippy by chasing him with their ATV’s, while others would threaten his life just because he wandered on their property searching for food. Although Tippy had an ‘owner’, he never truly had a home 😔

A few weeks ago we got a call from our friends at Mitchell County Animal Rescue, Inc-North Carolina that Tippy now needed a real home, one where he could spend his retirement years indoors, being loved and cared for by a family of his own 🙏

And so thanks to this life-changing program, guess who’s catching a lift tonight on Santa’s sleigh ‘aka BigHun2’ to Canada 🇨🇦😘 ?!?!

We hope you can join us tonight at Crossroads Asheville where Tippy, as well as a van load of 39 other shelter pups, are just a road trip away from being Home Fur The Holidays 🚐🎄🐶

What It Takes To Change A Life 🐾 🙏

Two weeks ago a call came in from good friends about a hospice case in Florida. Bubba had a home North and no longer needed to spend his remaining days in a shelter, but how do we get a big goofy pitty comfortably from FL to NY???

Simple. Make a call to my friend and air transport queen, Christy Swanton. Christy then makes a bunch of calls to a group of pilots, who without hesitation say—‘Done deal’ ✈️ A few more calls around logistics, including an overnight stay at my house where someone would pass out in front of the fireplace after Thanksgiving leftovers…😘

And just like that, Bubba’s shelter days were over 👊

Start your week off by watching Bubba’s arrival in NY, where his final journey ends with everything he’s going to need for his remaining days 🙏 Never forget that there are heroes that walk and fly among us, working together, day and night, for all the Bubba’s out there 💙

What It Takes To Save A Life 🐾🙏

48 hours before our recent transport, I was told by our partners North that they had room to squeeze in a few more dogs. I didn’t mention that the van was already full, I just thanked them and said we’ll see you shortly.

Oftentimes when I wake up in the night and it’s especially cold out, my heart is burdened for the many that are chained and without shelter, struggling to stay alive. So when the opportunity arises to make more space in our shelters for those in need of warmth, you better believe I’m going to take it 👊

To my family and friends that held down the fort in Asheville so I could run up to NY last minute with a few extra in my 4Runner, I love you dearly. I’m incredibly grateful to be surrounded by SO MANY that care SO MUCH for just a few ❤️

And thanks to my friend Will Newnham for taking the reins of BigHun2. Those pups you’re holding, as well as 58 of their friends, never have to worry about being left in the cold again!

As the saying goes…It takes a Village 🐾 🙏

On this Giving Tuesday, The SDTA is grateful for ALL the miracles, big and small, that have been ‘given’ to us 🙏

In honor of our work, a generous donor has offered to match up to $5,000 in donations! This means every dollar we raise this Giving Tuesday will have double the impact!

SDTA is an all-volunteer, grassroots 501c3 that provides transport services free of charge to county shelters experiencing overcrowding. We also have an emergency medical fund that ensures shelter pups like Sammi get the chance to live the life they deserve.

If you’re able, please consider supporting our mission of making the impossible possible for our shelter animals in need 🐾🙏

In gratitude,
The SDTA

We’ve decided to keep milking our theme of giving Thanks for just a few more days 😘🙏🐾

So…let’s not forget being thankful for Our Fosters!

Our transport dates are set, which means we don’t have the luxury of adjusting departure times based on how urgent the need is at a shelter. Our transports are also long hauls, which means medically compromised dogs often have to sit tight until they are cleared for travel 🚐✈️ Losing lives just because of space or time isn’t an option, so we call out for help on their behalf 👊

Fostering is an incredible act of sacrifice. Our hearts hurt at the thought of letting them go, but we also acknowledge that if we kept them all, the life we see before us wouldn’t exist. Although the majority of our fosters hand them back over, we’ve had a few epic foster fails over the years as well 😘

We’re thankful for our fosters who act as a life-saving bridge for our shelter animals in need. You’re the first to give them hope, the first to show them kindness, the first to tell them they are loved ❤️ These words and deeds will never be forgotten by those who came to you in their time of need 🙏

The Underdogs 🐶

This program was founded on supporting our shelters with the underdogs. Those we knew had big hearts, but because of size, breed, health or behavior they were often the last to leave a shelter, if ever at all 😔

A mission is only as strong as those who believe in it. And so we’re grateful for all of you, who believe with us, that our underdogs are truly WONDERDOGS!!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us the resources to allow our underdogs to show us who they really are 😘

Now check out our Wonderdog Ray Ray who once knew only a world on a chain. Although still blind, we believe he can see clearly now ❤️

What are we most THANKFUL for on this very special day of gratitude … 🙏 🦃 🐾

FUREVER HOMES 🏡 !!!

Buddy and Holly, a bonded senior pair, crossed our paths awhile back when they no longer were wanted by their owners. Knowing that large, senior dogs are often last to be adopted - chances were slim to none for a local home that would consider both. Yet, the thought of separating them was too big of a heartbreak 💔

I still cry tears of joy every time I look at these photos. Who would have imagined that a pair of homeless seniors down on their luck, would end up with a life like this!!! Some days I wish I could go on transport 😘

On this Thanksgiving day, we’re profoundly grateful to the families that choose to rescue us, AS WELL as our shelter animals from heartbreak. We can love them all, give them our all ~ but we can’t save them all without you ❤️

Happy Thanksgiving from Buddy and Holly 🙏🐾

Our Donors 💕

When I started this program I envisioned customized vans, top of the line crates, and expertise in relocation all to be at the disposal of our rural shelters and rescues 🚐 With limited budgets and support, I felt by giving our shelters a transport program of their own, they would now be empowered to save even more lives!!!

I also dreamed of being able to provide life-saving medical treatment to our rural shelters if an animal in their care wasn’t healthy enough to make transport, but still deserved a chance to one day get on board. I simply didn’t believe in euthanizing a dog or cat just because county budgets were tight 😔

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, what once was just a vision, is now an established reality for dozens of shelters and rescues throughout our State. You continue to empower our shelters with an INCREDIBLE life-saving tool, while also delivering compassion to those most in need 💙

Because of your support, instead of losing their life, someone now gets to enrich another’s. Instead of spending Winter on a chain, someone now gets to spend it in paradise 🙏

As we continue with all the things we’re grateful for this Thanksgiving week 🙏🦃🐾, let’s give some thanks to…

Our Medical Team 🩺👊

Every single shelter animal we send on transport has to have a health certificate to travel signed by a licensed veterinarian. This mandated document proves that an animal is healthy and able to catch a ride with us North 🚐

The majority of our rural shelters don’t have an onsite vet to complete this requirement. So a shelters only option if they wanted to access transport would be to travel to a local vet and pay an exam fee 🤦‍♀️ Knowing this would be too great of a financial strain for our shelters, we wondered if there could be another solution…

Our solution was simple: Find some really cool, local vets that would volunteer their time for free, day or night, at an airport or a parking lot, oftentimes last minute, to complete these forms for every shelter animal needing to travel North 😘

How about that! Let’s give A HUGE Thank You to our medical team—Dr. Rich Sefcik, Dr. Jennifer Logan Knepshield and my friend Kelly Brown for making sure EVERY shelter is able to participate in this life-saving outlet 🙏❤️ We are so thankful for you 🐶

Our Local Rescues and Shelters 🫶

Oftentimes we simply don’t have enough room on transport, or a pup is too medically compromised to make the journey North 🚐 Saying no often means lives will be lost, so we had to come up with a way to say Yes!

When I started this program 4 years ago I knew that one person, one rescue, one transport program alone could not by themselves bear the responsibility of reducing this States abysmal shelter euthanasia rates 💔 So I envisioned an alliance of many of us, sharing our resources, while working TOGETHER so that our life-saving capabilities could be maximized 🙌

No becomes ‘Yes’ when I becomes ‘We’ and that’s how this rescue show works 👊 Whether it be delivering life-saving parvo or heartworm treatment, making room for newborns, caring for a senior, or simply holding tight to a dog until our next transport departs ~ We are thankful for our local rescues and shelters!!!

Valley River Humane Society Animal Shelter, Mountain Pet Rescue Asheville, Rusty's Legacy, Almost Home Dog Rescue NC, Yancey County Humane Society, APL (Animal Protection League Of McCreary County)…These are just a few of the lives that are here today because of you 💙

Next up ~ All Of Our Volunteers!!!

In our previous post, we shared that 9,836 shelter animals have been given a second chance through this life-saving program!

How is this possible you ask??? Because we have an army of compassionate individuals that believe our shelter animals DESERVE a better future! They know through transport, the suffering and neglect many of these precious souls have endured, is now simply a thing of the past 👊

So our volunteers show up, rain or shine, day or night because in the face of need they acknowledge ~ if not us, who else will?

It’s a testament to the Power of We that a 100% VOLUNTEER DRIVEN, grassroots organization has forever changed the lives of thousands of shelter animals AND will continue to do so 🫶Yet, when many work together as one, nothing is impossible!

To all of our volunteers ~ Thank you for always answering the call ❤️ We are grateful for you 🐾

Shelter Dog Tranport Alliance

The shelter dog transport alliance is a partnership of several Western North Carolina county animal shelters working together to ensure every shelter dog gets a second chance at life. A recent study by Best Friends Animal Society has North Carolina ranked #3 for the highest shelter euthanasia rate, behind only California and Texas. In order to tackle this statistic we are currently partnering with several animal rescues in the North to relocate our dogs to safety and into loving homes when our shelters become critically full.

We decided to initiate this transport program because we never want to have to euthanize any of our shelter dogs because we simply don’t have a place for them. Further, we need to reduce overcrowding in our shelters so that we always have room to compassionately care for abandoned or neglected animals. Because of space limitations, many of our shelters has waitlists for people wanting to surrender animals. This has sadly led to the regular practice of individuals ‘dumping’ helpless puppies, elderly animals, or animals that are simply unwanted by roadsides or empty fields.

Our ultimate goal is to save lives, however, as we do so we are simultaneously working towards addressing the root causes that lead to our shelters being overcrowded. The Shelter Dog Transport Alliance is a life saving partnership that will not rest until our State is no longer a deadly statistic.
