So as it hits frozen tundra temps tonight I start to worry about all the animals living outside. I know you guys don’t need advice on keeping your animals warm, but I’m giving it anyway.

Deep straw bedding is the most important. Deep enough that when they lay down in it their legs are covered.

Maybe some extra cracked corn or grain.

Thin/old/sick animals may need jackets. Goodwill hoodies and fleeces can be repurposed for this if the animals are smaller.

If you have new babies they may need jackets or new dry ones. Also make sure heat lamps are working.

Stay safe and stay warm

Goats Clients that show this is for you.

To be compliant with scrapie registration all goats need to have a registered tattoo, scrapie tag or an 840 scrapie microchip. I can not provide these for you. You have to register with NY state and receive a premise ID then order them yourselves. I can advise you on how to do this. You can order as few as 5 at a time.

If I have put in a microchip for you in the past it will be ok for Niagara County Fair but probably not Erie or State.

Let’s think through this and figure it out while we have time. Please reach out to me if you need help.

I’ll address it also at my vet talk for the 4Hers.

My daughter crocheted this camelid for me for Christmas, she is the G. O. A. T.

Here is a great way to support the Niagara County 4-H Working Goat Program the weekend of November 9 & 10 at Long Cliff Vineyard & Winery.

November 9 & 10: Share the Bounty
Each November the Niagara Wine Trail USA hosts an annual fundraising event to support local charities and food pantries benefitting the communities along the trail. Each winery accepts either a monetary donation or a non-perishable donation in exchange for tastings this weekend.

This year Long Cliff Winery is donating all tasting fees collected plus $1 from each bottle sold to the Niagara County 4-H Working Goat program.

4‑H is America’s largest youth development organization, where kids build life skills by leading hands-on projects in areas like science, health, agriculture and, civic engagement. Over 1,000 young people aged 5 to 19 participate in 4-H activities in Niagara County each year! Including our very own J, who participated in the Working Goat and Poultry programs, prepared and gave his first public presentation, cared for his goat during Fair Week at the Niagara Country Fair and earned his first 4-H ribbons for showing his animal in the showring!

More young people need the kind of hands-on, youth-led experiences that 4‑H programs provide. Experiences where they learn by doing, grow from failure, express their ideas and use their influence to drive positive outcomes.

For those of you who have not met her, let me introduce Dr. Jamie Gould. She will be working for me on a part time basis. But I’m so excited to have her on board and excited for all of you to welcome her to the practice. We need more vets in Niagara County and Dr. Jamie is a welcome addition.

Make sure you check out September’s podcast. This is an amazing new procedure many vets and breeders are finding so helpful for those babies that struggle. Please report to me if you use it and it worked.

Ok I think I have everyone’s CVIs (health certificates) done. I have texted a few of you to look it over or with a few questions, but if everyone could look them over, check the details, make sure you can get to them. Also if you have cows/camelids make sure I emailed you your BVD results. Please don’t wait until next week.

Headed to ADK to camp for a few days. I’ll be back next week Tuesday. I may not even have cell service all the time so if you have a question and I’m slow to answer it is probably because I’m laying in a hammock reading and my phone has no service. 😉

New York State has just announced that all lactating dairy cows must be tested for High Path Avian Influenza before attending any fairs this summer. This is a milk test but must be done 7 days before the fair. I’m so glad they have taken this step to assure NY stays free of this for as long as possible. If you will need assistance with this testing please reach out to me. The state is covering the cost of this.

Hey I would love to get everyone’s fair checks on my calendar. Especially if you have a market lamb or a market steer you need your fair check before July 10th due to the 21 day meat withhold of the rabies vaccine. Shoot me a text so we can get everyone scheduled.

Headed out of town to finally see my folks. Be back on Tuesday. No animals are allowed to be sick over the holiday. 😉

Dr. Sarah’s Story

I spent the first eight years of my career as a large animal vet. I have always had a great passion for animal welfare and keeping animals as comfortable as possible. As I look into the next phase of my career, I want to expand my interests t0 small animals. My vision for Day 6 is to keep animals in the stress free area of their own homes while I help them feel better. This may be achieved through acupuncture for pain, allergies, issues Western medicine isn’t helping, etc. This may be achieved by consulting with pet owners about how to keep an aged or sick pet comfortable through their dying months. This may be achieved through letting them die peacefully in their own space. I would love to acupuncture your large animals as well, and in August 2020 I will add full service large animal medicine back into my offerings. I will focus on the small backyard farms that I have always had a passion for. I am a wife and mother of two small children. I am hoping this new business venture helps me create a good work/life balance, while allowing me to continue my passion to help animals.
