A month ago these two young mothers introduced their littles to each other and shared a meal. This turned in to a daily ritual. Now the Littles are flying solo and are still never far from each other. Such an amazing life lesson to witness.

Meet Gage also known as “Cutie Pie” to the ladies at the market. 🤣 He stumbled onto the farm 5 years ago and never left. His energy and passion for the farm and all fur and feather babies is contagious. He’s been with the farm from day one and has been instrumental in its growth. Thank you Gage!

Saga of the Little Red Chicken
Episode 6: On the Inside
This wait is pure agony. It's not that I'm impatient. Usually quite the opposite for me. It's just that I can practically taste those worms and it's driving me a little nutty. Worms are my favorite and this place is full of them. I peck through the weeds to fill the time.
When I can't stand it any longer, I sneak a peak around the corner of the shed. The coast is clear. I make a break for the big plastic house and aim for the compost pile behind it.
If you haven't eaten from a compost pile, I'm telling you this is where it's at. Everything you could ever want all in one spot. I hear you humans have places like that somewhere called Vegas, all you can eat buffets. Ya, like that, only chicken style.
Eventually I eat my fill and I'm feeling very content and suddenly really sleepy. I find a nice cozy spot in some old straw and quickly fall asleep.
The sun is gone when I wake. The darkness is absolute. I can't even make my way to the gate. Uh oh. Stuck out here for the night, gulp, alone?

Saga of the Little Red Chicken
Episode 5: Make Like a Post
I've always been a glass-half-full kind of gal. That brush with death earlier this week? I'm thinking that was a win. I'm not chicken soup so obviously that's good. Bad news is that the fence is fixed so my plan is toast. Yum, bread. Oh I wish I had some bread!
As I strut past the mule pen, giving both of them my best stink eye I'm racking my brain for a new plan of action. Wham!
I suddenly find myself lying in a heap staring at the sky, my head pounding something fierce. I hear Phyllis and Ruby cackling at my expense. I hop (gracefully) to my feet as a tail feather drifts to the ground.
"Silly Angel! Head always in the clouds. Watch out for that post!"
Light bulb. Could it be that simple?
How can I be seen but not seen? I'm only half a year old but that post has been here every single day!
A new plan quickly takes root.
That afternoon, I'm in the perfect spot right next to the gate. The farmer's truck comes around the corner and I get busy scratching. She hops out and swings the gate open.
"Well hello little Angel."
Not so easily forgotten I guess. I greet her back with a quick tweet and really get to scratching those invisible bugs. Nothing to see here. Move along. Move along.
This interaction continues through the end of the week. It's finally Saturday, her long day out here, and I know it's my best chance of getting in.
I'm in my spot early. She pulls in and doesn't see me. Excellent. I wait a few heartbeats while she pulls in to park. It's now or never. I make a run for the metal container and duck out of sight around the corner without a moment to spare. I can hear her closing the gate. Now I wait.

Saga of the Little Red Chicken
Episode 4: Busted
I like to believe that I'm a little more nimble of mind than your average chicken. My mind is filled with many complex thoughts every day. In this moment right here, I got nothing. I'm deeply, truly busted, and I'm certain it's the end for me.
"Angel, you know you can't be over here."
"Ya. I know." I squawk back. "So sorry, don't eat me." How does she know my name?
She stares at me for a moment that stretches into eternity, the weight of her stare pinning me to the ground.
She turns away and I can breath again.
"Come on. Time to go back little one."
Okay, so this is pleasantly unexpected. I'm shocked but relieved. I watch her walk to the gate and open it. She points down the road towards the coop.
I hesitate, not sure if this is a trick. She points again, "Go on. Back to the coop with you."
I take my time, shuffling my feet. I pause to grab a couple of quick bites wondering if there is any way to salvage this. I even pretend that I don't see the opening and shuffle past it, pecking my way down the fenceline. A surprised squawk slips out when I suddenly find myself flying through the air, a vice clamped around my wings. Oh, she's a quick one for a human.
She dumps me on the other side of the gate and closes it behind me. I turn and she is watching me, a thoughtful expression on her face. Yes, I will be back.
I squawk my goodbye and wave with my wings and make it to the coop as the last of the hens are moving inside. This night I dream of fat, juicy bugs stomping on mules.

Saga of The Little Red Chicken
Episode 3: Distraction
So I have a confession to make. I'm a chicken alright, not Mother Theresa. Two steps in and I'm in heaven and I have it all to myself. I totally forget all about making friendly with the farmer. This is way better than all my wildest dreams combined. I still get all jittery just thinking about that first time. No, I don't have a problem. I can control it...really, I can!
Anyway... of course I lose track of time. I fill the rest of the day digging up those juicy bugs, happily scratching through the bark mulch, truly content for the first time.
I snap out of my euphoria when I hear the roosters crowing the sundown call. Oh shoot! I gotta get back or the flock will realize that I'm missing!
I rush to the hole in the fence.
I slam on the brakes and skid to a stop just in time to avoid the hoof that slams into the ground in front of my beak.
(Okay, so I lose it a little bit here. Hey, don't judge. I AM only a chicken and I almost just lost this beautiful beak!) The mules are not our friends but dang it, I'm looking at an angry flock in one direction and becoming drumsticks in the other direction. Rock, meet hard place.
I puff my feathers up and start screeching up a storm. I'm not kidding, steam is literally coming off my feathers I'm that mad. That mule? Doesn't even blink. Just stares at me like I'm a dung beetle. I'm shooting my own daggers right back at him. He suddenly snorts at me, shows me his ugly mule teeth, and stares behind me. I cringe deep inside. The gig is up. Chicken pot pie here I come.

The Saga of the Little Red Chicken
Episode 1: The Farmer
I begin watching the lady farmer really closely. She is pretty chill about our flock, as long as we stay behind the fence. Any time one of us bee-lines it for the garden she puffs up all big, arms waiving wildly, yelling "No! Get out of here!" She doesn't let up until the offender is back under the fence. The older hens tell us stories of chickens gone missing after they crossed the fence. Fried drumsticks or into the pot were the whispered rumors.
On the days she picks the plants she tosses veggie scraps over the fence. And let me just say, Best. Scraps. Ever. Gotta be quick on those days if you want the good stuff.
She isn't there all the time so we sneak in a lot. She keeps a close eye on us when she is there but a few of us can get away with wandering the perimeter of the garden, ducking under the fence to grab a bug or scratch through the mulch once in awhile. But when we can't resist a nibble out of those tender sweet plants, Bam! Out on our tails.
So here's my train of thought. What if I didn't try to run straight to those plants she guarded so heavily? Would she let me stay in there if I just went to hang out, maybe help out? She is usually alone so maybe she is lonely. So my brilliant plan? I'm gonna charm that lady farmer. We're going to be friends!

The Saga of the Little Red Chicken
Day 0: Intro
Hi. My name is Angel and this is my story. I know what you're thinking. How could a chicken have a story? Well, that just goes to show what you don't know. Most of us little feathered creatures have a lot of smart things to say. Not everyone hears us, ya know? I've been lucky enough to find two people that do. But more about that later.
You know that age-old question how did the chicken get to the other side? Yep, that's me. I made it to the other side. Have you ever stood at the edge of a field and thought to yourself, boy oh boy, that grass sure does look greener over there? I did that.
I looked over that fence so many times staring at all those big green plants. Salivating about all the delicious morsels that would fill my belly if I could only find my way over there. Visions of juicy bugs filled my dreams every night. (Think about that the next time you eat chicken, ha!) And so I watched and I plotted and I dreamed of eating my fill of fresh veggies, juicy bugs, and endless seeds. One day I was going to make it to the other side.
