Clumber Spaniel Rescue League
The tragic case of 4 year old Sebastian the Clumber spaniel brought to light an important need in the Clumber spaniel community in the United States.
Many of us realized the Clumber spaniel breed needs a rescue that will take in Clumbers other rescues will not and we came up with a solution to help owners and breeders without judgment and in confidence.
We believe it is wrong to put a dog to death preemptively. This should only ever happen after all other possible options have been exhausted.
We will never make a recommendation for euthanasia without a medical examination and testing and a comprehensive professional behavioral assessment.
Sebastian’s Story: Sebastian’s world was turned upside down through no fault of his own when his human parents began to have domestic disagreements. His owner contacted the breeder and within two days of being surrendered to the breeder, Sebastian was dead. The tragedy of Sebastian is that he had never even bitten anyone. Before he was surrendered to the breeder in early October, he was handled in the show ring in the preceding July by his 6 year old human sister. Without any medical evaluation for underlying problems, any assessment by an experienced trainer or behaviorist and without any time to settle into his new and very different surroundings, his life was ended in 2 days.
This incident divided the Clumber world between those who felt the injustice of the matter and those that assumed, colored by their own past experiences with aggressive dogs, that Sebastian also, must have been aggressive and hence worthy of death.
The further injustice was that the breed rescue, on the word of the breeder, and against the assurances of Sebastian’s owner, recommended that Sebastian, a dog with absolutely no bite history should be put down.
The Clumber Spaniel Rescue League (“Rescue”) is formed to try to ensure that what happened to Sebastian does not ever happen to another Clumber spaniel. Our rescue is also composed of trainers experienced in evaluating and rehabilitating Clumber spaniels and other breeds of dogs. We will also hire certified professional behaviorists to help evaluate Clumbers that come into our care.
In Sebastian’s case, in addition to all the steps that were not taken, there is the last resort, an all-breed rescue.
Initially, the Clumber Rescue League is composed of three silos: First Responder Rescuers who will triage all intake cases. They will make a preliminary assessment and perform the intake and help with transportation. The second silo is Trainers. There are people who have experience working on rehabilitation and assessment of rescued dogs. The third silo is made up of Foster Families who will keep a Clumber spaniel and give it a home until such time that the Clumber can be adopted into a forever home.
The Rescue will also need to fundraise for medical costs, outside behaviorists, which may be retained from time to time and food for the rescues. These costs will be born by the Rescue until the Clumbers are adopted. The adoption fee for each Clumber would ideally recoup some portion of these costs. The fundraising needs are steep and we are starting at zero. However, what we lack in resources, we have in heart and sheer will.
The purpose of this organizational post is to look for volunteers. Many people from across the country have already volunteered to fill be First Responder Rescuers, and Foster Families but we need more.
