About Dr. Staples:
I have been performing veterinary acupuncture since initially taking the CSU acupuncture course in 1999. I recently completed the Curacore Veterinary Acupuncture course to become a certified Veterinary Medical Acupuncturist. I am passionate about the quality of life of my veterinary patients. My goal is to keep my patients active, happy, and comfortable. I received my doctorate

in Veterinary Medicine from the Colorado State University in 1990. I owned a veterinary clinic from 1991 to 2004, where I performed preventative health care, dentistry, surgery and acupuncture. I was in the Army Reserves in the Army Veterinary Corps for 28 years and was deployed twice between 2003 and 2009. I am a pet parent to my two cats, Misha and Café con Crema and my golden retriever, Margot, who I recently adopted from Big Bones Canine Rescue. I enjoy spending time outdoors in Colorado. I am an avid mountain and road cyclist. What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is the insertion of thin needles into specific points that are associated with nerves to provide access for modifying the neurologic system (neuromodulation). Acupuncture, performed by certified Veterinary Medical Acupuncturists, stimulates nerve and brain activity to produce natural biological responses. These responses include increased blood flow to the area, release of opioid peptides (endorphins and enkaphalins) by the body to produce analgesic effects, decrease inflammation and increase immune function. Acupuncture targets nerves, fascia, muscles and tendons to decrease myofascial restriction and improve mobility. Treatment protocol:
The first appointment usually takes about 1 hour. Dr. Staples will get a history, do a thorough exam, and if warranted for the condition, do a gait analysis (watch your pet walk from different perspectives). She will then do a myofascial palpation to identify sore areas of the body, trigger points and other areas of concern. Typical treatment consists of placing around 20 needles. The needles will remain in place for 15-20 minutes while your pet enjoys a tasty treat. This all takes place on their favorite bed or spot in your home.
