Attention Clients!

We have some exciting Continuing Education Events and Horse Health Studies coming up at BVEH Navasota!

In order for these CE events to take place we need some horses with specific issues...

If you have a horse with a Complex Eye Problem, a complicated Front End Lameness issue, or that is very Obese (on the body scale of 7+), we would love to talk to you about getting them in for one of these CE events/health study.

Diagnosis and Exam fees are waived (after acceptance of your horse for one of these events), and at the conclusion of the exam you would receive patient records and findings to treat here, or with your regular veterinarian.

We need both NEW cases, (not been seen by BVEH, or a new issue) and horses that HAVE been seen at BVEH for this recurring problem that is not yet fully resolved.

Reach out to us anytime if you think you have a horse that would fit the bill for Front End Lameness, Complex Eye Case or Obese Horse Study.

Prepping Your Mare for Breeding Season: The Benefits of Light Therapy

As we approach the breeding season, many horse owners are beginning to think about the best ways to prepare their mares. One proven method to get your mare ready for early breeding is through light therapy. At BVEH Navasota, we want to ensure that your mares are set up for success, both reproductively and in their overall well-being.

Why Use Lights?

Mares are long-day breeders, meaning their reproductive cycle is influenced by the length of daylight. To trick a mare’s body into thinking it’s spring—when natural breeding cycles occur—you can use artificial lighting to extend the amount of "daylight" they experience. By placing mares under lights for 16 hours a day, starting mid November you can jumpstart their reproductive system for a timely breeding season, potentially allowing for earlier foals.

How Does It Work?

This technique works by stimulating the mare’s pituitary gland, which increases hormone production, encouraging ovulation. Light therapy should be consistent, with mares exposed to light for about 16 hours each day, mimicking the natural conditions of late spring and early summer. Most mares need 60-90 days of this routine to enter regular estrus cycles, so it's best to start soon to stay on track for breeding season.

Bonus Benefit: A Short Shiny Coat!

Aside from preparing your mare for reproduction, putting horses under lights can also help maintain a sleek, shiny coat throughout the winter months. Horses naturally grow a thicker winter coat as daylight decreases, but with light therapy, you can keep your horses looking show-ready all year long.

No Barn, No Lights?

If you don’t have the ability to stall your mare in the early evenings to ensure continuous light therapy until 11pm, or your mare prefers the pasture, try the Equilume mask! These masks have an artificial blue light that turns on and off on its own after activation and mimics the summer light hours to help her enter the transition period earlier and begin fertile heat cycles. It takes all the guess work out of light therapy! We are placing a bulk order of equilimue masks on October 25th; if you want one at a bulk price point, let us know!

How We Can Help

At BVEH Navasota, our experienced Reproduction team led by Dr. Ricci Karkula can guide you through the light therapy process and provide any additional support your mare might need for a successful breeding season. If you have any questions or are ready to schedule a consultation, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

We were so honored to host the VET - Veterinarians Encouraging and Teaching Wetlab today!

Veterinarians Encouraging and Teaching (V.E.T.) is a 501c3 non-profit organization focused on enhancing relationships between veterinary students, private practice, and academia through social events, practical experience labs and mentorship avenues. A primary objective is to furnish students with networking opportunities with local and out-of-state veterinarians for externship and internship opportunities via career fair symposiums and expanded summer programs.

We had 4 incredible veterinarian instructors teaching different areas of equine medicine including: heart murmurs, ultra-sounding, lameness and radiology best practices, injections and palpation of limbs.

Thank you all who came out to learn, teach, and put this event on for future equine veterinarians!

Trigger warning: cadaver limbs pictured in the end photos

Did you see the video of the Paint Gelding yesterday?

The answer is D) Other

Here is the rest of his story!

It was noticed by his owner that he was slightly lame on the left hind one evening, the next morning (video shown) he was acting very neurologic and unwilling to walk and was brought into BVEH Navasota for an emergency assessment.

Dr. Kyle Grogger found a fracture in the P3 (coffin bone) of the left hind. The horse was walking so erratically due to trying to reduce the weight on the sore foot-once the foot was blocked he walked totally normally.

Dr. Weston Warnock was able to surgically remove the bone chip and debride the infected bone.

Just three months after surgery "Ready To ImpressU" aka Gus was able to walk down the trail with his owner again!

The owners wished to convey a great Job to the BVEH team of incredible doctors, interns, techs and barn staff for making sure Gus was very well cared for during his time in the hospital!
