Not a joke...
Have you ever wondered why you can have a 15 acre field and part of it is chewed down to nubs and the other part has grass a hand high, But your horse is constantly grazing in the chewed down part?
Grass 6 inches and taller has less sugars than grass under 6 inches.
For every inch drop below 6 inches, the fructan (sugar) content rises.
Grass under 6 inches is stressed like it's a Monday morning with a project deadline. It uses sugar to repair itself.
Stop mowing your fields short.
Stop grazing your chubbys on chewed down grass. (this is why grazing muzzles are so touted...they keep the horse from being able to get much short grass)
(We aren't saying let your fields be 3 feet tall, by the way. The optimal thing to do is keep them 6-8 inches tall and graze them in small areas there)

Have you ever looked at a zebra and wondered why we don't ride them like we do horses?
Well good news!
You aren't alone, and in fact, humans have tried to domesticate them!
But zebras said no and we said ok and this picture reminds me of that fact

Morning motivation
Happy Friday and don't worry...❤️
The older you get the more you realize not everything requires your comment. Sometimes keeping your mind open and your mouth closed is the best option.
Thanks Xavier and Dennis for stacking 204 bales of third cutting alfalfa in the barn today. The neighbor delivered to our door so we did not have to go get it!

📣 Attention Spokane County Residents!
We need your support to ensure the well-being of our furry friends! 🤝💙
🔍 Did you know that the City of Spokane has taken a step forward by incorporating a true no kill policy in their contract with SCRAPS?
However, we believe that the safety and protection of animals should extend throughout the entire county!
🎯 We are calling upon all passionate animal advocates and caring citizens to join us in advocating for unification in contracts between your City and SCRAPS.
✅ Our goal is to see the addition of the following verbiage in all contracts: "The operating policy of SCRAPS will be to restrict euthanasia to only those cases in which the animal in the care of the facility is found to be in the process of dying or determined by a licensed veterinarian or animal behavioral specialist to suffer from an irremediable prognosis. No euthanasia will be performed without the express approval of the SCRAPS Director." 🐾❤️
📣 Join us at the next city council meeting in your area and make your voice heard! 🗓️
Comment below or message us to learn more about how you can get involved and help us make a difference! 💌🙌
🐾 Let's create a county-wide movement for the safety and well-being of all animals! 🌟🌍

No riding and drinking in CA. Please make a note of it.
A man in Merced, California was caught by California Highway Patrol officers while riding his horse and being under the influence of alcohol.

Lots of mowing as a reward for the trying the in-hand trail class at the Spokane fair. These are our two boys so not for adoption.

Moo! We had fun at the Spokane fair with Jake and Ellie in the costume class. We were Reserve Grand Champion and got a lot of laughs. The donkey kids were not thrilled but they are patient with us being silly for a bit. These are our personal watch dogs so not for adoption.

Rough Start Animal Rescue, Inc.
This tax exempt horse rescue serves Spokane, Wash. and the surrounding areas. www.roughstartrescue.org for more details. We provide training, food, shelter, and vet care to horses that have been abandoned, owner surrendered or confiscated by law enforcement or animal control to place them in new homes. Please contact us to make an appointment or to see if we can help place your adoptable horses.
What kind of horses can we help at the horse rescue? Each horse is accepted on a case-by-case basis and all horses are evaluated for safety first before we can take them here. Most folks do not want to adopt some “wild” horses that they cannot catch or trim all four of their feet or worm them, etc. Horses that have had some previous experience at horse shows or know how to ride or drive or both will be considered. Most folks do not want to adopt horses they can’t use in some way so if your horse is mean, wild or has issues, they are not adoptable for us to place in a new home.
We do not take in horses that are under age 4 or so old they can no longer be ridden or driven. We are not looking for pasture pets, but horses folks can take on trail rides or play with them, once we update their horse training of course. Again we do not take in horses that are very old or only have a year or two left. You will need to put them down yourself. We do not want to take in too many unadoptable horses here which is why we evaluate them first. Thanks. If you need help putting down your horses we are not the ones to contact for that service.
Why is the rescue under new management and a new location? The founders of the horse rescue are moving to Texas so to keep it open a longtime volunteer has stepped up to keep it running. Rough Start Animal Rescue, Inc. is formerly Rough Start Horse Rescue. The new location is near Seven Mile or north Spokane and the new director is MD Mossburg or a longtime volunteer. MD Mossburg wanted to keep this rescue going even after the Freeman family was moving to Texas.
Once we put in some more fencing in April 2020 (once the ground is thawed enough to build), we will have room to take in some horses needed new homes so volunteers and donations to get us up and running.
CONTACT US! Send a private message to MD Mossburg on Facebook for more details and I check emails daily. www.roughstartrescue.org is the new website. Messaging is easier to reach me when I am outside working horses or fixing fencing. This is the new phone number here which is a landline only so no texting: 509-796-2140 is a voicemail only and it might takes a few days to return phone calls. Messaging me direct on Facebook is faster than calling on the phone. Thanks.
