Going into business with a friend?
I am asked this question quite a bit and I’m always met with a questioned look on the person who is asking this questions face. I want with all my heart to say YES! What fun to go into a new adventure with the person you feel so close to, your boyfriend, your best friend, etc. It seems like a no brainer because this person has been in your life for so long and you know each other so well. You do everything together. But guess what? It’s not a yes answer and it’s not as perfect as it sounds.
Situations are going to pop up and down the road (who knows maybe 6 months or 4 years) things start to happen like one of you starts going in a different directions due to who knows what. Family, husbands, parents, whatever but it happens. Then one of you are doing more than the other is doing and it starts to get harder and you are not sure what to say to that person or do you say something and it leads to hard feelings or worse. Now there is a struggle with communication and schedules and more!
Maybe you decide to buy out your partner or them you? Did you set up the business correctly in the beginning? If you should decide to go forward with this partnership be sure to set up the business in a legal manner to avoid difficult situations in the future. Here is what I recommend.
Before starting sit down together and talk about all the items you can think of regarding the business. Who is doing what, and do you both need to approve each and every thing going forward? What happens if one of you dies? What if one of you wants to put in more money but the other cannot afford it at this time? Do either of you have children? What if one of them is ill and that parent can’t be or do what is needed at the time the business needs them? The list can go on and on.
Put a business plan together that you both agree on and then take it to a lawyer who specializes in business law. You can DYI the forms but it could be expensive to do that in the long run if things go south.
Last but definitely not least, do you want to put this friendship in jeopardy? Is it going to be worth losing them or a business or lots of money?
