As chickens develop, they work to find their voice, literally. The crowing of a chicken in the distance is usually a welcoming addition to the characteristics of the farm or backyard chicken life. For the teenage chicken, however, some of their beginning attempts at crowing sound downright painful. As you spend more and more time with your roosters and listen to their crow’s, you may be able to even identify which rooster is associated with the crow you hear. In this video, listen and watch as the roosters in the coop exchange crows in a span of about a minute. (Some of the time has been cut to shorten the video). Do you recognize the same crows from the respective roosters?
Chicken Must Have's - Vitamins & Electrolytes One of the best boosts for new chicks is a supplemental vitamin and electrolyte added to their water. For newly hatched chicks that were shipped to you, the amount of stress and fatigue they immediately have can take a toll on their health. Offering newly hatched chicks as little as one teaspoon of electrolytes and vitamins to one gallon of water can drastically enhance their energy and overall health. For adult chickens, in times of extreme heat and extreme cold, an electrolyte and vitamin supplement in their water can boost their overall health as well. Several options for such supplements exist from hatcheries offering chicks as well as in several retail outlets where chicken products are sold. Read and follow the directions of the manufacturer as listed on the package. If a vitamin and electrolyte supplement is not available to you, a common practice is to add a little bit of sugar to the chickens' water. This video shows one of several options available to you. The dosage used in this video is for demonstration purposes only as a way to highlight what such a supplement can look like in powder form and when mixed with water.
Chicken Must Have's - Clean, Full Waterers Water is essential to life as we all know and for chickens it is even more important if you want to ensure your hens continue to lay eggs. Without a ready supply of clean water, your hens' laying cycle can be quickly disrupted leaving you with no eggs. A chicken's water consumption generally is about twice that of its feed consumption. It is estimated that 100 adult chicken can consume up to 5.5 gallons of water every day. At temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit or more, that consumption amount may double! King of the Hill A warning to all new chicken owners, they are addicting to watch! Newly hatched chicks offer a wealth of entertainment as they scurry around stepping and jumping on each other. From their high energy antics to the cozy snuggling they share with each at night, you can be entertained for hours watching them. These two chicks were playing a game of "King of the Hill" with each other as they kept bumping each other off the log and then would glare down at their defeated opponent below!
The chirping sound of small chicks is music to many ears. Chirps can offer various meanings and we believe the chirping in this video are chirps of contentment as they grow feeding on ADM’s Chick Starter/Grower feed.
Do chicks need a heat lamp in the summer? Supplemental heat is only needed to ensure the chicks are in an environment with a temperature of 98 degrees Fahrenheit the first week of their lives. Newly hatched chicks do not have their feathers developed so supplemental heat is typically needed. Even when the day time temperature is in the 90’s, remember that cooler temperatures at night may dictate the need for a heat lamp. Ultimately, it is suggested to keep a thermometer in the brooder of the chicks so you can monitor the temperature of their environment. If you see the chicks constantly huddled together, they may need supplemental heat.
