R2 had her ofa X-rays this weekend she got her hips,elbows,spine,shoulder,and patella’s done. Now we wait for the ofa ratings.

As a future breeder I want to do it responsibly and ethically. Now we just need to get her thyroid and VWD testing done before I can fully look into to breeding her.

I haven’t posted in a while and I apologize..been a very busy summer.

We participated in the Beauceron National Specialty and Journee this past September and had a great time seeing friends again and finally meeting online friends in person.

I’ll always be a breeder who is honest and open and while my most perfect girl scored excellent in the morphology portion of the Journee she didn’t pass the temperament test. I’ll be honest I’m actually shocked in a way as to why she startled at the gun fire as she’s not sound sensitive at all and has been around gunfire and loud noises made by construction and farm equipment. She did recover and only spooked(like a horse who jumps sideways during a spook and recovers) as many in my opinion would have of any species. As for the baton(attack) portion she’s a 1000% a lover not fighter. R2 did pass the recovery portion with flying colors and was trying her best to appease the temperament judge with all her might. (I have video of said temperament test for anyone who wants to see it).

We do have some hopeful big things in the works as well when if come to furthering our herding where R2’s ability really shines through.

I couldn’t love this girl anymore than I do and I’m so glad I have her to teach me as trainer and human being. She makes my heart so happy as she gives me 110% with only a little bit of sass thrown in for good measure!

The girls had a fun Saturday getting to meet a new herding instructor. They did wonderful I’m very happy with them.

Then we visited family and they both were perfect angles with their elderly pups and acted like they knew they needed to be gingerly around them. I was shocked a 5 month pup would chill and behave as she did.

Finding a responsible and ethical breeder can seem like an overwhelming task for someone newly researching a breed, and while there are many absolutes to look for, theres also many "maybes".

A responsible breeder should *always*:

- Agree to take back any puppy they produce if you can no longer care for it. No matter what age, they should be responsible for any dog they produce if the owner cannot be.

- Health test as appropriate for the breed. This isn't just "vet checks" but proper testing to clear the parents of genetic diseases.

- Breed with a purpose. A breeder should be able to answer what their goals are with each breeding, and understand the pedigrees behind their dogs. They should be breeding to improve on something in the breed rather it be conformation, drive, and/or temperment.

A responsible breeder *may*:

- Show or title their dogs, but maybe not. A breeder may have an explanation of why a dog isn't titled, or actual work (SAR, herding, hunting etc) may be their goal over competing.

- Belong to their national breed club. The national breed club is a great place to start in researching breeders, but not every member may be an ideal breeder, and some breeders may have legitimate reasons for not being members of their club.

- Co-own dogs they sell. Some may, some may not, but if they do, be sure to have a thorough understanding of all of your expectations before agreeing to any contract.

If a breeder checks yes for all the "always", and has explanations for the "maybes" the best thing you can do is get to know them and build a relationship to see how you like them and their dogs. Get to know past puppy buyers and hear their experiences. An ethical breeder won't make blind promises that their puppies will be perfect for everything, and if they aren't a good fit for what you're looking for, they should be confident in admitting that. Keep in mind that many breeders are of older generations and may not have a flashy website or huge social media presence, but do have decades of experience in their chosen breed. Find a breeder your comfortable with, and if you have any doubts, keep looking!
