UPDATE: RIVER HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!

UPDATE: All of Rivers friends have left the shelter. He all alone in there😞. And no one has called to do a meet and greet.

River wants to know why all his friends have meet and greets today and he doesn’t. If all the meet and greets go well today and they all leave, River will be the only one left at the shelter. And that is no fun for a puppy only 14wks old. If you are interested in meeting River call (405)527-9881 to set up a meet and greet!

Today is National Cook For Your Dog Day! How many of you cook for your dog and what is their favorite treat?

27/10/2023

Happy National Black Cat 🐈‍⬛ Day! We do not adopt cats or have a place for cats at our shelter, but we do love to see them in happy homes. Share the Black cat you are celebrating today!

Don’t forget about the TNR challenge we have going on. We have a generous donor who has challenged the community to come together to help with the cat population in town. They are willing to match up to $500 in donations towards this program.

How is TNR good for the community and the cat population? We are stopping the unnecessary breeding, spread of diseases and unwanted wildlife.

A single cat can start breeding at 4months old. She can have up to 4 litters a year. The average litter size is 4. The average life span of a cat is 12-18 yrs.

What diseases can we help prevent and control by controlling the cat population with TNR?
Ringworms are very common in cats and can pass to people. Ringworm is not a worm but actually a fungus that infects the skin, hair and nails and can spread to other pets or people. This is just one of many diseases that cats have the potential to spread.

TNR can also help with unwanted wildlife in neighborhoods. With designated feeding areas and times we take away the opportunity for wildlife to come in and feed on left out food intended for the cats. The lack of food resources means the wildlife will be forced to find food elsewhere.

Thank you for the continuous support in animal welfare and the support of the animal shelter.

Today is Global Cat Day! This day is dedicated to bringing awareness about the crisis we have with cats.

A female can get pregnant as young as 4 months. The average litter size is 4. And up to 4 litters a year. A cat’s average life span is 12-18yrs. Do the math. How many kittens on average can a single cat produce? Spay and neuter is essential.

We are trying to get a TNR program going. By coming together we can do better for the cats of our community. Please remember these are kittens we where lucky enough to find and get much needed care before anything worse could happen to them. We can save and help so many more with a TNR program.

The shelter is open for adoption and intakes again! The dogs pictured below are available for adoption.

Adoptions are done by appointment only. To make an appointment please call the Lexington Police Department at (405)527-9881.

Seal- is a blue pit; she has been at the shelter since September. She is approximately 5yrs old. When we last posted her we said for rescue only, but now we are confident she will do well in the right home. Before when we posted her, she was severely underweight and had open sores. We are happy to report her sores are all closed and continuing to heal and she is up to a healthy weight. She is a very happy and energetic girl. She is good with other dogs.

Luke- is a lab mix, he is approximately a year old. He has been at the shelter since May. Luke is a lovable goofball. He loves to play with people both big and small. He loves playing with other dogs. And will do almost anything for extra treats.

Brock- is a shepherd mix, he is approximately 2yrs old. Brock is high energy and always on the go. He gets the zoomies easily and he is so quick. He loves to play fetch but doesn’t have the return down yet. He believes every walk should be a run. He loves water, but not baths. Grooming brushes are the best toothbrushes. He is not a fan of Thunder storms or fireworks.

Lady- mixed under 30lbs and a year old. Lady is very energetic and loves to run. She can be social with other dogs when required, but prefers to do her own thing. Lady enjoys just sitting, snacking and listening to the latest gossip.

Bubba- spotted mix under 30lbs and a year old. He is our shy boy. He is very picky about his food and treats. It takes him a little while to warm up to people and other dogs.

Today is National Body Language Day.
Your body language lets people know the mood your in and what you are feeling regardless of the words you are saying.
Pets use body language to express and communicate what they need us to understand from them. A pet owner or someone approaching an animal may not always know what the animal is communicating. This lack of understanding can lead to horrible consequences.

These consequences do not just involve the person that did not understand the body language. These consequences also effect the animal as well.

Being knowledgeable in a pets body language can help the pet and it can also prevent some unnecessary consequences.

UPDATE: We would like to that the generous donor that brought in the Mini Fridge and Metal Trash Can. This is greatly appreciated and a tremendous help. Thank you so much!

The shelter is still closed at this time to adoptions and intakes. And will remain closed until October 11, 2023.
Many have asked what they can do to help and make a difference for the animals at the shelter.

Norman Animal Welfare has been kind enough to donate a washer and dryer and outside runs. Thank you so much! I won’t be doing the laundry at my house now!

We are in need of dog houses for these run and more water bowls.

We are also in need of metal trash cans.

We are needing a mini fridge to store medicines.

All donations can be left at the Lexington Police Department.

We also have donation jars at Gas-n-Go and the Kwick Stop. Monetary donations are also accepted. Checks made to City of Lexington in memo for Lexington Animal Shelter.

You can also donate directly to the Animal Shelter account at Riverbend Mobile Veterinary Services.

Thank you for your continued support.

National Black Dog Day! Top 10 reasons to adopt a black dog.
1) We do not clash with furniture or clothing. Since some people actively worry about dog colors clashing with their styles.
2) We look amazing with all the accessories we wear.
3) Ease of vacuuming. You can spot the areas that need most urgent attention.
4) Excellent night walk protection. Bad guy won’t see us until it is too late. But I might be scared of the dark too so well lit areas are preferred.
5) We hide dirt well. So it is not us you are allergic too it’s what we played in.
6) We make your colorful dog look brighter in color when we are photographed together.
7) We are available! We are not ones on a long waiting list and come in every size and age! And at any shelter you go to.
8)We are a status symbol. And we all know that Black Diamonds and Black pearls stand out in a crowd.
9) No annoying questions of what kind of dog is that? Simple I’m a black dog and my personality nothing less.
10) We need you! And you might just need us too!
