The correct use of your outside rein influences the horse's whole body and it's essential for good dressage riding.

You don’t need to be big.

You don’t need to be loud.

You don’t need to shake the world and yell from the rooftops to alter the path, and move things.

You simply have to listen, step forward, and do.

Over and over again.

Listen, step forward, and do.

Humbly.

Knowingly.

Truthfully.

The outside rein is the most underused and poorly understood of all the aids, and here’s why.

Try this simple exercise from grand prix jumper Mavis Spencer to help tune up your horse and slow down his mind:

“I find that placing a ground rail on the take-off and landing side of a vertical, followed by an oxer gets the horse to slow down a bit at the fence and really use his body. This is one of my go-to exercise for between-show schooling sessions. This exercise isn't about the fence height, it's about getting them to slow down. When the vertical is 3-foot-3 to 3-foot-6 (or even lower), placing the rail nine feet in front of, and 10 feet behind, the jump is a good distance. When using these ground poles with an oxer or with a larger fence, I push the pole on the landing side a bit further out. If your horse is not used to the exercise, give them an extra foot or two on either side of the jump."

We think that when we pull the inside rein, the horse must obviously turn his nose and then follow it. Right?

Do you collect Breyer Horses or know a sweet little one who loves horses and would love some? I have been contacted by someone who has a lot (around 28) Breyer horses in good used condition. They are all around 30 years old as they belonged to her son. If you are interested in purchasing these and would like to contact her, please let me know and I will give her your info! (Photo is just for attention, not the actual horses.)

"Old Horse"

What riders and owners consider old varies greatly across the community. In many areas, especially, but not exclusively in high-performance sectors, a horse who is 12-15 is considered old. Whereas in other areas, a horse is only considered old when they hit 18-20.

To better understand this, you have to look at the physical demands of the animal in each subsection of the industry, as well as the overlapping welfare issues that may cause a horse to prematurely break down and, thus, have the stamina and mobility of a horse that is much older.

Care is a huge factor, and goes well beyond feed, farrier and turnout. It also includes proper training, and equally as important, proper rest, along with fitting tack.

Take 2 horses, 1 in a competition schedule while the other is just for pleasure riding. Both ridden dressage, both ridden 5 days a week. Same riding style, same feed, same farrier and turnout, the only difference here is tack. One has a saddle that fits while the other does not. The horse whose saddle doesn't fit will constantly remain in a state of heightened stress, and is also unable to utilize his body correctly due to discomfort. If the horse is forced to constantly compensate, there will be additional wear and tear on the body no matter the level of care in other areas. Thus begins the premature breakdown and "aging".

Patience is key when starting a young horse over fences, says top hunter trainers Havens Schatt and Fred Commissaire.

I DID NOT KNOW... by Alissa Kelly

I did not know a horse could bring people into your life that end up meaning the most to you.
I did not know a horse could make the hardest days of your life bearable.
I did not know a horse could teach you to put others first.
I did not know a horse could remind you time and time again that your gut is always right.
I did not know a horse could break your heart.
I did not know a horse could pick you up when you have fallen apart.
I did not know a horse could teach you to dream again, after you thought it was not possible.
I did not know a horse could make you believe in yourself.
I did not know a horse could teach responsibility, work ethic, and dedication.
I did not know a horse could make you believe in something when no one else does.
I did not know a horse could make you learn to forgive and forget.
I did not know a horse could humble you faster than you can say humble.
I did not know a horse could make you a winner.
I did not know a horse could also teach you how to lose gracefully.
I did not know a horse could instill patience in you.
I did not know a horse could make you listen better.
I did not know a horse could give you their heart.
I did not know a horse could change your life.
I did not know a horse could do all these things...
but now I know. ❤️❤️
