Rest in peace our beloved Bandit. June/July 2006 - November 28, 2023 (17 years with Ryan and 15 with me). We are very broken hearted. Ryan was playing Pink Floyd songs for Bandit before the vet came here to send him on his next chapter. I think he was still aware as he was resting - eyes opening and closing some. - that we were all there. The vet was great with Ruby and Ruby is holding up a million times better than me. We were open and honest with Ruby and she knows he's in heaven now.

Bandit turned 17 in Sept. He stopped eating his human grade cooked lamb and rice kidney support vet formulated diet (that really helped keep his kidney issues at bay). The vet said to just "give him what he'll eat." He's losing muscle mass and his hindlegs are weak so we give him herbs the acupuncture Dr. recommended. The only way he'll take the herbs is if they are hidden in weiners (I never fed him weiners but I'm desperate to get him to eat something (he even stopped eating beef and sardines and lamb) and the vet said it's fine at this point). And he is eating our treats and an egg from our hens - along with Fromm kibble. He craves kibble now after not having it for 3 yrs. Just cherishing each day with this special boy. Gone are the days of taking him mountain biking (yes, this little dude would keep up with us), but we can still snuggle together.

So cool that Shaggy Dog Market has groomers now. All three stores carry both flavors of Brothers Barkery treats. We are looking at bringing blueberry back but having sourcing issues on quality blueberries and the quantity we need.

Don't forget tomorrow is another Toenail Tuesday at our Grooming Salon located right next to our Kyle store. Half-priced nails trims are the way to start to the Fall ya'll! And I just rhymed! Ha! 😎

Celebrating Bandit's 17th bday this month. His actual bday is unknown as Ryan got him from the shelter when he was just a few months old. He had a near death experience 3 yrs ago where the emergency vet told us to put him down that night after a splenic mass ruptured. A Chinese herb our integrative vet gave him saved his life and stopped the bleeding. I just ordered a year of heartworm meds for him bc he could surprise us and keep giving us more years. This little mutt stole my heart from the first time I met him. He's been in my life from Ryan and my 3rd (or so date) in 2008. So, I consider him my dog now too. These last 3 months I've incorporated swim therapy (thanks to our neighbors letting me use their pool), acupuncture, and Chinese herbs for mobility. For over a year, he's been on a low protein human grade ingredient lamb and rice diet for his kidneys. And Antinol (green lipped mussel oil - from the sea) for his joints. And when he doesn't want to eat, I top his food with Brothers Barkery dog treats. Oh, how I love this guy!

⚠️ WARNING! The Austin Watershed Protection Department posted an update that toxic blue-green algae has a continued presence in Lady Bird Lake, Lake Austin, and other public swimming areas, including Barton Springs.

Please keep your dogs out of the water to lessen the risk of ingesting the deadly algae. As an alternative, we suggest visiting your local dog swimming center or setting up sprinklers and/or kiddie pools in your own backyard!

Pupology in Georgetown is a darling store with a great boss lady and employees who really care about pets. They carry only the best in pet foods and products. Janet has been carrying our treats since before Pupology was a brick and mortar store (when it was a pop up at festivals).

Good afternoon, friends! We have some exciting updates:
1) After a few years of wholesale only, our parent company is open to the public again Fri. 10-2 each week at 519 US Hwy 281 Marble Falls. Follow that Facebook for the menu posted each Thursday night - bring your humans. We started off as a bakery and cafe in 2002 and are glad to bring back the cafe front - limited seating - mostly takeout.
2) After a year of trying to locate a large quantity of nonGMO tapioca flour, we are back making Lucy's Sweet Potato. Named for the rescue rottie mix we had from 2002-2015 and we are happy to keep "Lucy's" going. The ingredients are the same as before when we started making it in 2009, we just added tapioca flour to help it come together better. Making gluten free treats can be tricky bc without the gluten binding it, you need other simple ingredients for texture. Most of the stores are carrying this flavor again and if you need them to restock this one, please let them (and us) know. Thank you for the support of our small, family-owned business!

A neighbor was kind enough to let me do some hydrotherapy for Bandit two weeks in a row. His back legs are giving out and he's losing muscle mass (16.5 y.o. and arthritis). The vet liked my idea of having him swim short distances with lots of breaks. He did well and he was a lot more stable after last week's session. I think it will be the same after today's session. I am too afraid to take him to natural bodies of water after reports of deadly algae in Austin.

This week, we restocked 3 of our favorite grooming salons. They have each been carrying our bags of treats for many years. They are each locally (family) owned and have our sample jar on the front counter. If your dog has been a good boy or girl, give them a free cookie to sample or buy them a bag. These are in north central Austin: Groomingdale's of Austin, Bravado Dog Grooming and Plush Pad. I think Plush Pad does cats too.

Lucy, our inspiration for Brothers Barkery treats. We had no information on her background as she was found on the highway in Florida in 2002. My first few visits with the vet had me questioning what she was eating. The vet said that she was just going to be prone to ear issues and need to have ye**ty buildup in her ears cleaned often. I did some research and then completely eliminated wheat, corn and soy from her diet. At that time, you could find "natural" treats but they still had wheat in them. So I started making them at home experimenting with non gluten flours. After that her ears completely cleared up. In 2009, I started dating Ryan of Brothers Bakery and then he perfected my recipes. We formed Brothers Barkery that year. I also changed Bandit's diet too (his pup). When we eliminated wheat, corn and soy for Bandit his red, itchy belly cleared up....and there you have it :)

This is very scary. Years ago, we used to take our dogs all of the time to Red Bud Isle before word of this algae. The City does a good job of testing and notifying us. Please help spread the word so dogs don't go swimming in this toxic stuff.

Our Mutt Bandit is 16.5 yrs old and survived a ruptured tumor 3 years ago. I know I talk about this a lot…bc it’s amazing. Thanks to Dr. Tackett at Paz for giving him the Chinese herb Yunnan Baiyao. After losing my last mutt quickly after giving her arthritis medicine Rimadyl, I am so uptight about giving any medicines. The vet at that time said she lived a long life for a Rottweiler mix at almost 13 but it seemed too soon. I am still not over it. We now see Paz and they include natural medicine along with traditional. Bandit gets Heartguard but for his arthritis we are trying Antinol which is made from New Zealand green-lipped mussel. He’s also been doing super for one year on for kidney support. It’s been a year and his kidneys have remained stable since last year’s bloodwork. His liver improved too. This is human-grade food and frozen. Bandit is a miracle. 16.5 years, weighing in at 14 lbs, y’all!

This is true. Not rumor. My dad's 4 yr old dog died after a "yelp" from choking while eating a rawhide. He did some research and found that that rawhide came from China and was coated with arsenic too. This was 30 years ago and impacted me heavily. I've never fed our dogs rawhide (or anything like in the picture with fake food coloring). We seem to have good luck with all natural USA raw beef femur bones. Good pet stores will carry these frozen.

Deliveries made yesterday to Bravado Dog Grooming, Roots Integrative Veterinary Care and Paws On Chicon (they have 2 locations). These locations are all stocked. Roots gets treats in bulk from us and uses them in the treatment rooms. They have all been our customers for years, and we are so glad to see these businesses (including ours) made it through the pandemic. Now, to deal with skyrocketing ingredient costs - and Ryan (the baker) looks for non-GMO so this makes it a challenge. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support through the years - and thank you to those shopping these great local businesses!
