This has been in the works for a little while now, but things are finally official! I am so honored and excited to be carrying saddles from BLISS OF LONDON and Cavaletti Collection. These saddles are absolutely gorgeous and most importantly are made to last with the horse in mind, and Bliss of London and Loxley by Bliss are also hugely customizable for horse and rider. I don't know about anyone else, but it sure seems like the end of the year has crept up quickly! Remember best practice is having your saddle checked at least once a year for horses ridden casually, twice a year for horses in regular work, and more frequently for growing youngsters, horses in heavy work, or horses whose workload is increasing/decreasing. Let me know if it's time to check yours!

We're back with ✨𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆✨ this week with an important equine career- the 𝙨𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧! 🐎

A ✨saddle fitter✨ is 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 to any recreational or professional rider! Saddles come in all shapes & sizes, just like horses! It is important to find the correct fit for your horse to keep them (and yourself!) comfortable and free from injury! Saddle fitters can be affiliated with a specific brand, or they can be independent.

We recently sat down with, Iron Tree Saddle Fitting, based right here in 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐲, to hear about her career.

𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙬𝙣𝙚𝙧, 𝙅𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙖𝙣 𝙒𝙚𝙗𝙚𝙧:
"I am an independent saddle fitter, and I cannot remember a time when I didn’t love horses. I grew up riding, and always knew I wanted to have a career working with horses, but just didn’t know what. It wasn’t until I was searching for a saddle for a uniquely-shaped Mustang that I attended a saddle fitting class, and acquired the knowledge to find something that worked for him. Our partnership flourished, and that was my light bulb moment - I’d found what I wanted to do with my life, so enrolled in a Saddle Fit and Flocking certification program. Two hundred and fifty hours of study of the horse and the saddle, both in the workshop and in the field, I was certified and sought to replicate that experience of partnership and education for others.
Every appointment has been with a rider who is willing to work with me to support their horses’ needs, whether that need is adjusting their current saddle or finding a saddle that will be a better fit. The most rewarding part of what I do is being able to see an immediate difference when we find a fitting solution, and the horse responds in the loudest way they can - by showing their ability to work more comfortably under saddle and being able to do what they were bred and trained to do. I am an independent saddle fitter, and I am honored to work for horses because of how earnestly and whole-heartedly horses work for us. Thank you, KEEP!"

This is why when someone asks me, "how often should I have my saddle checked for fit?" I don't always have a clear and cut answer! It depends on so many things and is why it's good to have a relationship with a professional saddle fitter just like you would with a farrier or body worker. Good practice is having your saddle checked twice a year, and more frequently if the horse is young and growing, coming back into work, or their workload is increasing (or decreasing!).

**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays meme relates to the changes in back shape and saddle fit.

The horses back shape (posture) can alter with exercise (if ridden in a correctly fitted saddle), training, seasons etc. Important that the fit of the saddle is checked regularly to reduce the risk of back related dysfunction.

As an example - a saddle that is fitted on day 1, after 90 days of correct training and management (resulting in an improved top line) , will the saddle still be in balance and a optimal fit??

Or a saddle which was “made to measure” for a young horse, will it still fit the same as when the horse has matured??

The horses back is a dynamic platform where it’s movement and shape is influenced by multiple factors. The fit of the saddle must be checked regularly throughout the horses ridden career regardless of what it’s purpose is - hacking or sporting.

Good morning beautiful Kentucky! It is (almost) officially my favourite season. Summer heat is -finally- giving way to cooler autumn weather, and offering us more opportunities for comfortable riding in the process, no matter what discipline you enjoy! But comfort is more than just about the weather, and it's even more important to think about saddle fit for both horse and rider comfort when faced with more riding time.

As an independent certified saddle fitter, I can work with both English and Western saddles of any brand and model, and I am happy to work first with what you have and then make recommendations from there to achieve the best comfort and fit for you and your horse. Here's a fun little project I got to work on! I helped this client find a new dressage saddle at the Raleigh tack exchange, and this Prestige D2000 was a great deal and it fits her and her gelding beautifully, but it had a small hole at the front of the panels where it met the edge of the facing. I decided to take it home with me and drop the front of the panels and attempt a small repair and it went great! Also gave it a good cleaning while I had it open.
