Your puppy just picked up an item he’s not supposed to have… now what???

Our first instinct when a puppy grabs something is to catch the puppy and remove the item from his mouth. But what did this teach the puppy??
“Whatever I just grabbed must be SUPER valuable because my human made a huge deal out of it…. Also, that experience of my human fishing something out of my mouth was incredibly unpleasant…”
This very experience is how puppies form the habit of stealing objects and running away because us humans have inadvertently added value to random items by making a huge fuss! Also, the game of keep away is pretty fun….

But, your puppy has something in his mouth… Take a second and think… how can you AVOID chasing your puppy and forcing his mouth open? Grab something that is higher value than whatever your puppy has - cheese, hot dog, a new toy with a fresh squeaker, a brand new smelly bone… ask your puppy to drop his item, then present him with the higher value item. The second your puppy drops his stolen item, give him his reward! The worst case in this scenario is you accidentally teach your puppy to retrieve random items if this is done very frequently…

Ideally, we can be PROACTIVE! Keep your puppy on a leash and supervised when he is loose in the house to prevent him from gaining access to things he’s not supposed to have. Keep doors to bathrooms, closets, and bedrooms closed. Utilize baby gates. When you cannot supervise, he must be in an area where there is 0 chance of him grabbing something he’s not supposed to have!

Although there are no true dog training certifications, there are still many ways to continue to expand your knowledge and receive credentials when it comes to pet dog training. I have received the CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed) certification which assures I have over 300 hours of dog training experience and passed a lengthy written exam about training methods, dog behavior, training tools, and more. I continue to expand my education by reading books, watching and listening to educational content put out by well accomplished trainers, as well as always learning more through training the dog (and humans, as well as the occasional cat) in front of me!
