These overwintered ranunculus are finally starting to bloom! Lots of TLC goes into coaxing these Mediterranean natives into growing in New England without a greenhouse. Global warming combined with lots of blankets and lights helps.

Just love getting photos from clients of their blossoms from us. Spending so much time around these flowers, one can forget how gorgeous they are, particularly since they typically leave us in tightly budded stage. It's a thrill and a treat to be able to see them in their full glory! Send some more over!

So many beautiful blooms heading out over the next few days...some as host/hostess gifts for the big game, some to celebrate their pals for Galentine's and my personal favorite...some to just enjoy as a form of self-care and personal inspiration for winter days. Whatever the reason, thank you for supporting local flowers!

Next week will close out the Persephone period where we will have more than 10 hours of daylight. This is one of many prompts for plants to start growing again. Looking forward to poppies, anemone and ranunculus this Spring!

Burst of spring in the coffee nook during these frigid temps! There's a sheen of ice on the hoops outside and the driveway is an absolute ice rink. The new year's resolution of no broken bones for 2024 might be at risk. Stay on your feet everyone!

Is she a keeper?

New trial alert! We have thousands of tulips growing in hydroponic trays from November to March which means that for more than half the year, those trays are just taking up space. This season, we did a last minute trial of amaryllis to see if we can have them earn their keep for a few more months. Jury is out! Yes or Nay?

Glow worm tunnel test! Between El Nino and overall climate change, the winters have become milder, but as evidenced by last winter, we can still experience sub-zero temps. To prep for a polar vortex, more sensitive plants get a string of Christmas lights to bump up temps in the caterpillar tunnel. Looks cozy!

Time to start geeking out and obsessing about temperature and humidity levels! That's right - it's time for winter tulips! 🙌

Lots of moving pieces when growing indoors during the coldest part of the year. It nurtures the secret scientist in me. Can't wait to see some gorgeous blooms in January!

USDA plant hardiness map has been updated for 2023 and confirmed what many growers have been seeing in the field... it's getting warmer! Our proximity to Long Island Sound moderates our climate, but there are some growers that are now a full zone warmer than in the past. Without a doubt, the wild weather swings over the past few years have made it increasingly difficult to manage the blooms and the warm up will just add fuel to the proverbial fire. 🥵

Life-long learning and inquiry motivation! Carving out time to flex the brain and, quite frankly, take a break from the most labor intensive part of the season. is an annual fundraiser by to support our local community organizations. With a focus on interior design and gardens, it is a fun 3 days of learning and socializing with some of the leading designers for both interiors and landscape. This session on Bunny Mellon and her passion for gardening was a highlight!

Dahlia "Diva" throwing monster clumps of tubers at the end of the season. This season, half of our dahlias will overwinter with a layer of straw and a caterpillar tunnel. The other half were dug up, shaken off and placed into cardboard boxes to store for a late winter washing and dividing. We've tried a number of different methods for storage and find this to be the most successful - many times, less is more!

This clump of Diva was the exception since it is ridiculously dense so will tackle it now and store in some Promix to keep it from drying out.

In the throes of the busiest part of the season- planting spring flowers! While not as pretty as a bed of blooms, this tidy row cover will keep the baby plants warm and dryish for their winter nap before exploding with color in the Spring. Looking forward to posting an "after" photo in the Spring with lots of gorgeous color. Also, loving these new Low Cat Hoops from Neversink Farm. Easy and sturdy!

The final flowers and last bouquet are always dedicated to my father who passed 6 years ago on this day, November 1st.

In his final weeks before succumbing to cancer, I would bring him dahlias for us to admire together. In happier days, we would plant the patio around his pool with so many summer annuals and he would be out there religiously watering, deadheading and fussing over them. Some of my favorite photos are of him watering with my young daughters and their pint-sized cans.

As the season comes to a close, I marvel at the beauty of it all, even in its journey towards the end. Bittersweet, but filled with gratitude for what we had and hope for what is to come.
