My personal horse (and her saddles) had to sit on the back burner for a hot minute. A few weeks ago I went up to Brassy Bit Tack to have my CL (ranch/roper saddle) worked on, and today I finally got around to working on my $75 Facebook marketplace find.

I did a generic flock job on it when I reflocked it over the summer. Today I put it on, rode in it, took some video, and felt around a bit. Afterwards I brought it home to make some adjustments and cleaned it up as well.

I love these older, minimalist saddles SO much. It rides like a Practice Saddle but these trees are made to last a lifetime! I grabbed this one to help my core strength, leg stability, truly just my riding as a whole. There's nothing holding you in: no block, knee rolls, nothing!

This weekend I had quite an interesting case, so I thought I would share!

This horse is a beautiful 18hh warmblood x Irish Draught, and had one of the worst cases of kissing spine I personally have ever heard of. He was showing all the typical signs such as developing serious behavioral problems, and becoming generally unsafe to ride.

His wonderful and loving owner sent him to North Dakota for surgery where they removed 80 mils of vertebrae (!!!!) and has recently been cleared to start working under saddle again.

Of course, as a horse that has not only been out of work for quite some time but also received serious surgery to his spine, he has significant muscle atrophy and has become asymmetrical through his top line.

After reviewing the fit of the saddle straight out of the box, there was adequate wither clearance but irregular movement when tracking left. Because his left trapezius was more underdeveloped compared to his right, when tracking left I noted irregular movement of the cantle and the right panel was pulling away from the lumbar.

To fix this issue, I added flocking to the panels at the base of both tree points at the head plate, and needed to add additional flocking throughout the entire left panel to compensate for his significant asymmetry and muscle atrophy.

These adjustments provided an extra inch of wither clearance, as well as resolved the issue of the right side irregularities when tracking left, and established full stability through the saddle, also solving the the horse’s irregular movement.

Of course, we do not usually recommend having a custom saddle immediately adjusted out of the box, but since he has been cleared to go back into work 6 months post op and has changed muscularly quite a bit since he was fitted, I wanted to make sure that the saddle fit him absolutely perfect again to aid in his recovery and eliminate any possible discomfort.

As the saddle breaks in, it will eventually gain a more supple flexion, which will continue to aid in full panel contact as his top line condition improves.

We are all very happy to see this horse successfully back in work, and I am so glad to be able to aid in his recovery by creating a special saddle fit that allows him to move comfortably!

Spunky was diagnosed with kissing spine so it was pertinent we relieved ALL vertebrae and did not overload the symptomatic lumbar region. A saddle with long tree points offers optimum stability, crucial for maintaining comfort and panel contact.

I'm taking a trip through Wisconsin today as I had some fittings in the Milwaukee and Central Wisconsin area. Walking out of a Starbucks outside of Milwaukee, I see a woman get out of her car with her son and peer curiously through my windows.

I arrive at my car and unlock it. We make eye contact.

"There's a lot of leather in that car."

Yes. Yes there is. 😂❤️

Freezing-rain days are spent indoors finishing projects. I'm so pleased to see a new life breathed into this Loreley!

This saddle was sitting at RS Saddlery a few weeks ago. As RS is a Western Saddle Shop, this old saddle was sitting unmarked in the used section. I inquired at the front desk and after some conversation they were generous enough to let me take it home for only $50!

As you can see it was in pretty rough shape. The billets were not safe for use. The panels weren't attached in the back at all, either. At some point in this saddle's life someone attempted to hot glue the rear panels back on due to the damaged stitching. How wild is that?!

Honestly, I think I might have been the first person to work on this saddle since it left production in Switzerland over 30 years ago!

The Loreley is one of my favorite models from Stubben. Such a statement piece. I can't wait to see it on a horse again! 😍😍😍

It is so frustrating to meet new clients who have very recently been given an "ok, good to go" or even been sold a saddle that almost doesn't fit their horse at all.

I guess it's not frustrating in the aspect that it brings me business but I definitely don't fit saddles and sell Stubbens for the money. I do it because I care about horses more than just about anything. Their comfort is one of my top priorities and it directly influences their ability to perform to the extent that we as riders ask them to.

I have always felt it's my duty to be brutally honest. It's what you pay me for. Why would I sugar coat it?

It makes me frustrated for the horse. It's not fair to them, to have to be uncomfortable for so long, and when their owner did everything right. They had the professionals out, they bought the saddle recommended to them, and still I see it over and over again: horses ridden in ill fitting saddles, causing chronic soreness and, if present long enough, behavioral issues.

I am SO SO SO lucky to not only have the opportunity to represent Stubben but also have the education I do from Stubben, my fellow colleagues, and every ounce of saddle fitting training I've gone through over the past years. I have seen my horses benefit from it, I've been able to monitor discomfort so closely while waiting on work to be done on my customs and while riding in a temporary saddle to hold me over. I am so thankful I am able to do so right by them.

I hope I make a difference in every fitting I do for both the horse and the rider. It's really the only thing that matters to me, in the end.

Can I just say, I am IN LOVE with these streamline pads?!

I was on the fence at first but HONESTLY they are just PERFECT!! Leena and I went for a 3 hour trail ride yesterday and the increased ventilation kept her withers and spine completely dry.

I am also in love with my new, and actually first ever, dressage saddle. 😍😍😍
