Just a quick reminder!

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spec? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg....far from where it was inserted, between the dog’s shoulders. This is actually quite common.....

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body SHOULD be scanned to catch any that have migrated. But, as an owner, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AT THEIR YEARLY VET EXAM, to ask for a quick scan to make sure that: (1) the chip is still working, (2) the location of the chip is good, and (3) that the chip info is correct.

Remember microchips save lives and reunite families with their pet.... just have it checked regularly!

Training Tip Tuesday!

One of my favorite ways to give an animal a pill is to use what I call The Chaser method. The driving force behind this method is to keep the animal focused on the next piece of food instead of what is already in their mouth.

I took a video with my cat (easy to give pills to) and my dog (too smart for her own good and suspicious of textures in her food). Jasmine (cat) prefers to take her treats from the floor, so I work with that, but it works better if you can keep their nose up so the food goes does a little smoother.

Let me know if you have any questions about this way of delivering pills and hit the ❤ react if you want to see more Training Tip Tuesdays!

One of the most challenging things about dog ownership can be brushing their teeth regularly. A big tip is finding a toothpaste that they enjoy, so the experience is more rewarding. My dogs love this toothpaste so much that they don't even mind that I am brushing their teeth with it! https://amzn.to/3ytbG3o

Happy National Fresh Breath Day!! Keeping your dog's breath fresh can be a challenging and often overlooked aspect of dog care, but there are a lot of different chew toys and treats that are designed to help with that. Today I wanted to take the time to share some favorites in our house, the Whimzees! They are one of the few dental treats that my dog will actually chew instead of just eat! I wanted to share this Get 4 for the price of 3 sale that I found with you 😍 I don't know how long it will last, but it has a ton of Whimzees for all sized dogs in it!!

Public Service Announcement:
You can work AND keep your dog 😊
Know what? Dogs sleep 12 to 14 hours a day. Get a camera. Guess what your dog is doing while you're at work? Sleeping! They'll sleep with you at night and while you're at work. So that dog you just "rescued" 6 months ago while you were teleworking and now you want to get rid of because you have to go to work - great news! You don't need to. He'll sleep while you're gone and be ready to play when you get home. But he deserves someone who is home with him? Wait, you mean someone who doesn't work? Guess what? Most people have someone in the household that works! He loves you and he's fine with you earning money to feed him.
Carry on. Go to work. Keep your dog.
Even better - get him a friend and they can nap together.

🤔🐶Training Tip Tuesday🐶🤔

Did you know that something as simple as eating their meals out of a slow feeder or a puzzle feeder can help with some behavior problems? Dogs have to think more about how to get their food when presented with these more complicated bowls.

When they engage their brains in this manner, over time it can make them less anxious. It is one of the many ways that our dogs "ditch the bowl" and work for their food!

Part of our training program is learning how to relax with other things going on. By learning "that's none of my business" it allows the dogs to disengage and rest more fully, even in a busy (and noisy) household. We start this as we do all things, with nothing interesting going on at first and work our way up. Rita is acing her training!

Meet Rita. Rita is my foster through Stray Animal Adoption Program and she will be staying with me until she is adopted. She came from the shelter as a stray so we don't know much about her other than she is extremely sweet and adorably chatty.

She will be going through my special foster training program that uses games to teach her the basics of how to be a calm and respectful doggo so she doesn't get stressed out by the little things. She is clearly food motivated and eager to please so this should be a lot of fun for us both! Rita will get some training face time here, but you can also watch her journey over on SAAP's page 💖🐶

As summer arrives and the days get hotter, do you know how to tell if your dog is overheating? Dogs can overheat very quickly, with some dogs being at an even higher risk such as those with dark or heavy coats and those with short faces. Keep an eye out for the following signs and take a break to cool off if you see them:

• Excessive panting
• Excessive drooling
• Increased heart rate
• Signs of agitation (pacing, whining, etc)
• Vomiting
• Dark red gums
• Elevated body temperature

Need to cool down? It’s important to cool your dog down slowly.

• Get your pup out of the sun and into a cool, shaded area
• Offer them a small amount of cool water to drink if they are able to drink on their own.
• Wet the dog with cool (but not ice cold) water – this can be done with a kiddie pool, with wet towels or by gently pouring water over them. It is ESSENTIAL that the water is not too cold!

Be sure to share these tips with your fellow dog lovers to make sure everyone has a fun and safe summer!!

A wonderful reminder! Dogs need physical and mental exercise. Mental exercise plays a much larger role in their overall health than most people give it credit for!

𝙔𝙊𝙐'𝙍𝙀 𝙊𝙉𝙇𝙔 𝘽𝙐𝙄𝙇𝘿𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙀𝙉𝘿𝙐𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘾𝙀.

Dogs do not need to run miles & miles a day to be fulfilled. I see time & time again, people saying their dogs NEED to go to the dog park, to burn off all that energy. Their dog has poor recall so they HAVE TO go to a fenced in dog park, otherwise their dog will run away.

Running your dog miles & miles a day, day after a day, only builds their endurance. Usually making them unbearable when you can't take them out.

𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃 🧠

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your dog spending hours on place while you work. Your dog will be more than fulfilled on a long line, doing obedience, trick training, scent games. If your dog has poor recall, sounds like a great time to utilise that long line & N.I.L.I.F, to me.
