9 years ago, Caitlyn the dog came to Charleston Animal Society with electrical tape wrapped tightly around her muzzle, cutting off blood flow and clamping her teeth down on her tongue.

Little did we know, the story of her abuse, recovery, and animal cruelty trial would capture the hearts of millions across the world, making her the face of the horrors of animal cruelty in South Carolina.

For 150 years, Charleston Animal Society has been dedicated to a single mission: the prevention of cruelty to animals. Community leader and Charleston Animal Society Board Member, Shelly Leeke is issuing a challenge for animal lovers everywhere to join the fight against animal cruelty for the next 150 hours.

9 years ago on May 27th, 2015, the world was shocked by an image that showed a horrific animal abuse case. Caitlyn the dog arrived at Charleston Animal Society with her muzzle wrapped so tightly with electrical tape that it had cut off circulation to her tongue and cheeks. She was in a lot of pain, her condition was critical and her prognosis was guarded. That was a quote on that day from Lucy Fuller, DVM, Senior Director, Veterinary Medicine. The image of her and the look in her eyes sent shock waves throughout the US and beyond. TODAY at almost 11 years old this true survivor is living a fairytale life. She has a human brother and dog friends and a loving mom and dad. Her world changed forever on that day. You will not believe the life she lives and who adopted her! Her dad is the prosecutor who put her abuser in jail. She has been growing older and now has a grey muzzle but her distinctive scars are still prevalent on her face. Please consider donating in Caitlyn's honor to our Caitlyn anti-cruelty fund to help us to fight cruelty on all fronts! https://charlestonanimalsociety.org/caitlyn/ or consider purchasing a raffle ticket for our 2025 Subaru Forrester. https://go.rallyup.com/subaru/Campaign/Details All proceeds benefit homeless animals in our community!
