Get to know our recent round of trainees!

Oreo - 5 year old Pomsky here for 2 weeks to work on some redirection issues, vocal Husky behaviors, excitable energy, and overall arousal issues. Oreo is a spunky boy who is easily frustrated. He will be learning all about how to tone that down, process emotion better, and gain skills to help navigate new environments.

Rocky - 11 month old German shepherd here for 2 weeks with Trainer Claire. Rocky struggles with reactivity towards people and dogs, he’s an insecure guy who doesn’t process pressure well, and needs to learn how to mellow out his mind and take direction from his handlers. He will be doing all of that and more while with Claire!

Cookie - 4 year old Golden doodle spending 2 weeks with us. Cookie is a demanding guy, he barks at people and dogs (in an attention seeking way), has some insecurity issues, pulls on the leash, chases small animals, etc. He is focusing on learning how to tone down the chaos and relax his mind while navigating public spaces.

Rivers - 10 month old Labrador Retriever finishing up his 1 week board and train program with us. Rivers is a little bit nervy, can be impulsive, but also struggles to tone down his excitement. He worked on a lot of settling skills, confidence building, and exposure while with us!

Jax - 1 year old Black Mouth Curr spending 2 weeks with Trainer Claire! Jax is a very insecure girl, she’s nervous around new people, dogs, and places, and struggles to process pressure well. She still has some puppy tendencies at home and is learning how to take direction and relax her mind while with us!

These kiddos are hard at work learning all about appropriate behaviors and boosting confidence. Keep an eye out for their progress and more!

A common misconception people have is that their dogs must be practicing greetings and forced interactions for them to learn how to have good interactions. This is just not the case…

Forcing interactions can do the exact opposite of what your intent may be. Pushing dogs into greeting other dogs or people without any boundaries set in place can lead to a very overwhelming experience. And that feeling can instead promote your dog to become defensive, fearful, quick to bite, dog reactive, frustrated, and much more. Ultimately ruining their trust in you as their owner/handler and blurring the lines of your relationship.

Instead, focus on building neutral and positive experiences. Experiences where your dog is not over pressured into interacting, but building up trust with other well behaved and neutral dogs. Learning that interactions can be relaxed, from a distance (or close depending on the dog), and REGULATED.

Don’t believe me? In this video alone, there are 3 dogs recovering from and working through reactivity. But you wouldn’t know it just by looking. Because their owners have built and taught appropriate behaviors, shown their dog they can be trusted by regulating and setting boundaries, and provided the PROPER exposure to people and dogs.

So the next time you want Fluffy to meet the stranger on the street, think about it. One bad experience (whether with a dog or person) can negatively impact their perception and trust.

So many reasons “Place” is such a staple command, and confidence building is one of them!

For dogs lacking confidence, we like to keep things flowing and fun. And what better way than hopping on and off objects? This activity gets them moving more, over analyzing less, and trusting their handler. Once your dog is more confident inside, we will take this outside and do the same exercise on various objects in public; such as park benches, tree stumps, chairs, etc. Using a fun activity to help dogs break through barriers is part of what training is all about!
