We hear this often! So well explained!

So many owners have been bamboozled by continuous fear-based, illogical, propaganda messaging to the point that they’re paralyzed from taking common sense action to resolve their dog’s behavior issues.

Let’s explore.

A dog appears on your walk. Nothing happens initially. Then your reactive dog stares, barks, lunges at the dog—you correct them. The reactivity stops. The trigger dog was there before, and after the correction. Only one thing started, stopped, controlled the correction
your dog’s behavior towards the other dog. Therefore the presence of the dog doesn’t predict, control, impact the consequence, and thus no negative association with the dog is created
but one is created with the reactivity.

Your dog jumps on a guest. You correct them for the jumping. The jumping stops. The guest was there before, and after the correction. Only one thing started, stopped, controlled the correction
your dog’s behavior towards the guest. Therefore the presence of the guest doesn’t predict, control, impact the consequence, and thus no negative association with the guest is created
but one is created with the jumping.

Same with your dog barking, growling at a child. You correct the dog for the unhealthy behavior towards the child. The barking, growling stops. The child was there before and after the correction. Only one thing started, stopped, controlled the correction
your dog’s behavior towards the child. Therefore the presence of the child doesn’t predict, control, impact the consequence, and thus no negative association with the child is created
but one is created with the barking, growling towards them.

Or your dog is barking in the crate. You correct them with an e-collar. The unwanted behavior stops. The dog was in the crate before and after the correction occurred. So it’s not being in the crate that started, stopped, controlled/predicted the correction, it was only the dog’s behavior (barking) while in the crate. Thus the barking is what the negative association is connected to not the crate.

Your dog is smart. It’s looking for ONLY what predicts and controls the consequence. And they gain clarity in that regard by experiencing repeatedly that it is only THEIR behavior that starts, stops, avoids the consequence
not the mere presence of the trigger. And thus they gain clarity that it is THEIR behavior that the negative association is associated with.

The walk is not the holy grail of dog training.
There are many other behaviors that are more impressive, beneficial to your relationship, and simpler than having a heel command. Start there.

The truth is - if more owners would implement structure and management techniques during the first few weeks of owning a dog, many of the problematic behaviors wouldn’t even arise.

Training isn’t something that ends once your dog “knows the basics.” Just like people, dogs benefit from continued learning and practice. Over time, commands can fade, new habits can form, and different life stages can change how your dog responds. Our Rescue Rep, Gabe, (and I) got a little refresher today from Brian with Superior K9 Academy.
We learned the art of the “heel” command and quickly realized that even one short, positive session can make a big difference.
Remember — training is not just about obedience; it’s about building a lasting relationship based on understanding and respect. ❀

Help us welcome the trainees starting off our November! 🍁

Tukka - 5 Month old Germans Shepherd puppy spending two weeks with Trainer Kenzie. Tukka is a classic GSD pup who jumps, counter surfs, pulls on the leash, and is in need of some all around obedience work. He will be learning all about manners and appropriate behaviors in a variety of environments.

Marlei - 4 year old Yorkie spending two weeks with Trainers Brian & Sam. Marlei is a sweet girl who just needed some basics built. She’s going to be traveling and performing some service dog duties for her dad, so public desensitization is a key. We can’t wait to watch this girl shine.

Harry - 4 year old Maltese spending two weeks with Trainer Brian. Harry is a spunky little guy but his sass tends to get him in trouble. He’s a big barker, doesn’t listen to his parents at home, and all around needs structure and to learn some manners. He will be doing just that while with us!

Be sure to watch our daily stories and social media posts to see Tukka, Marlei, and Harry progress through their training! đŸŸ

Fear periods typically occur between 6-18 months of age. How you handle a fear period will pave the road for your puppy’s future.

Feel like your dog’s stay command is disappearing?

Start practicing sit stays and down stays throughout the day. (For example - meal times, exiting doors, randomly while on walks, while you make coffee, etc)
