There is a reason trainers advise to consult with a professional when training with tools.
Improper tool conditioning can lead to issues and behaviors you may have not seen prior to training. Why? Because there is an art form to layering tools such as e collars and prong collars into training. Slapping on an e collar or prong collar and using this to only “correct” for unwanted behaviors can build a very confused, frustrated, and combative dog.
The truth of the matter is, training tools are there to help build communication. They bring value to your voice where you may be lacking. Tools can create clarity in your expectations, and (our favorite) allow the handler to communicate without frustrated emotions. You can make such micro corrections without needing to increase your verbal intensity.
But when the time has not been taken to properly condition and positively associate said tools to a dog (especially a reactive dog like the one in this video) it came make matters worse. And ultimately increasing the native stigma against training tools. 🙄
Moral of the story, ALWAYS consult with a professional trainer when introducing training tools to your dog. AND do your research on said trainer! It can be a life changing addition to your training routine, when done right 😉🐾

There are many benefits to teaching your dog a proper heel command while walking.
Heel in its self teaches boundaries and how to build fluid movement between both dog and handler. This command has the dog keep mental focus on their body’s position, their handler’s position, and how tight the leash becomes; all while moving! Talk about mixing mental stimulation with physical! 👏🏼
For dogs who utilize heel in their walks, it’s not that they are not allowed to sniff, but instead the expectation is that they are conscious of the leash, their owner, and their surroundings. Sniff breaks are granted!
Truthfully, all dogs should be able to maintain a loose leash while walking along side their owner (aka HEEL). This is a prerequisite for all of our training dogs before freedom and sniff walks are given. Adding structure does not mean freedom is removed! It actually unlocks more freedom and a stronger relationship in the future 🐾

Although we have had some fantastic lesson clients, we find the board and train program brings more success. And this is why! Consistency, follow through, and repetition are all things we preach to every owner. But during a lesson program, we find this is exactly where most owners struggle.
During your board and train program, your dog is brought consistency daily. In every aspect: their routine, their care and handling, and their training. This structured environment helps create focus and build good foundational habits. The more consecutive days in a row where your dog practices these behaviors and receives this structure, the more embedded these habits become in their brain.

Training starts inside the home. It’s difficult to have high expectations for your walk, training session, our public outing when we rush into it and neglect to set the tone before we step foot out of the door.
Place is a fantastic command to do just that! With easily excitable dogs, place allows them to settle prior to the exciting event. This simple exercise allows the handler to slow everything down, take their time, and ask their dog to be in a healthier mindset. Setting you and your dog up for success is the first step to attaining session or outing!
What other steps do you take to prepare your dog for a training session or public outing? Answer in the comments below!⬇️

Let’s start making normal every day accidents not a big deal for our dogs!
Puppies are so impressionable and how we control and display our emotions can either set them up for success or build unwanted behaviors quickly. When typical accidents happen, such as falling into the pool, it’s important we monitor our energy. Escalating and over worrying can lead to lack of confidence and extremely sensitive dogs. Displaying confidence and handling sudden situations with a calm demeanor shows our dog we want them to do the same; allowing them to process and work through the situation. Next time you feel worried during a situation like this, take time to assess and respond calmly!
****PLEASE NOTE: some breeds such as bulldogs, basset hounds, etc. do struggle to swim, and those breeds should be rescued immediately if they fall into the pool. Otherwise, most dogs can and do know how to swim even if they do not do so often****
