We're so happy we could be a part of Maurice's glow up! Glad he's living his best life now as a pampered housecat. 😻

Here is Maurice in his new home. ( They did not change the name). When Lucinda found him, he was pretty banged up. Of course un-neutered, skinny with a very loose and dangerous collar, covered in fleas, with a front paw injured. Dr Goh at Animal Fix Clinic took care of him. Thank you! Look at him now! The king of his castle.

Bambi, a beloved 14.5-year-old Chihuahua, was in urgent need of surgery to remove her blind and painful right eye. Medication was no longer helping, and her family couldn't afford the surgery at the local ophthalmologist or her regular vet. Desperate for help, they turned to Animal Fix Clinic.

Our staff recognized the urgency of the situation and were able to fit tiny Bambi, just over 3 lbs., into our schedule within a week. During surgery, we not only removed her painful eye but also spayed her to prevent future health issues and extracted a few painful teeth.

Bambi's recovery was smooth, and she was overjoyed to reunite with her family at the end of the day. Her family diligently kept us updated with her progress, and four weeks after surgery, they shared this heartwarming message: "I can’t thank you guys enough for the amazing quality of life you have given Bambi. She’s gained so much weight, wags her tail constantly, and is back to her big attitude. She’s recovered amazingly and acts 5-10 years younger. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

We are incredibly grateful to the Grey Muzzle Organization for helping us provide lifesaving and life-enhancing surgeries for dogs like Bambi. Your support keeps these cherished pets happy and healthy in their homes.

Another handsome pitbull-type dog was neutered at today's Stand Up For Pits Foundation, Inc Bay Area Spay & Neuter Angel Day!
This nationwide program provides free spay/neuter surgeries for pitbull-type dogs to communities in need of these lifesaving services, in honor of ANGEL🪽

Did you know that neutering dogs can have many benefits beyond preventing further overpopulation?
Neutering can:
-help your dog live a longer, healthier life
-reduce the risk of testicular cancer, hernias, and prostatic disease
-reduce behaviors like spraying, territorial aggression, and sexual aggression
-reduce the desire to roam (this means lower risk for accidents, contagious diseases, becoming stray, and fighting)

One of our absolute favorite surgeries is entropion repair! This condition, common in companion and community cats, causes the eyelid to roll inward, making the hair on the eyelid rub against the cornea. Ouch! These cats come to us squinting, with eye discharge, and sometimes corneal damage.

The procedure involves removing a thin strip of skin adjacent to the eyelid - correcting the inward roll to a normal position. Done under general anesthesia, this surgery brings immediate relief.

Meet Jacob, one of our recent patients with painful entropion. Jacob has a loving caretaker, but he prefers the outdoor life. After his entropion repair, along with neutering, vaccination, and parasite treatment as part of our community cat program, Jacob is back to living his best life, able to see like a normal cat. Thank you, Petco Love Access To Care Grant for making this possible for Jacob!

In April 2024, Mrs. J reached out to us for help. Her family had been caring for several young cats in their neighborhood, including Raphael, who had an injury to his left hind limb. Although Raphael could stretch his limb, he couldn’t bear weight and had an open sore. The family shared videos and pictures of Raphael eating, showing he was generally healthy but clearly needed his limb amputated.
Born to a community cat, Raphael was friendly with only two family members. He wasn’t a typical patient for most vets, and the cost of amputation was beyond the family's means. They didn’t want to surrender him to the county shelter because they would miss him terribly. Following a neighbor’s suggestion, Mrs. J contacted us. We arranged to have Raphael brought in for surgery, where we could amputate his limb, neuter him, vaccinate him (Thank you, Petco Love), implant a microchip, and give him an ear tip.
Raphael’s surgery was successful. His limb injury was severe and becoming infected, making the amputation lifesaving. The family managed to cover the cost of his neuter, while we used Petco Love Access to Care funds to cover the amputation.
The day after surgery, the family picked up Raphael and were delighted to see him much brighter and happier. They are very grateful to Petco Love for their generosity in providing funding for lifesaving care.

Mittz is a 2-year-old cat that found himself with a urinary blockage for the 2nd time! With help from San Francisco Aid for Animals and Petco Love Access To Care Grant, Mittz was able to come to Animal Fix Clinic for emergency surgery. He would need fluids for the next few days post-op. We showed his people how to administer the fluids so that they could do it at home. They did great! Mittz is back to his happy self and enjoying lounging at home with his family. We love you Mittz!

Petco Love is dedicated to helping alleviate the shortage of veterinary care professionals within partner organizations. As such, they have established the Petco Love's Vet Tech Scholarship at Penn Foster for designees of qualified animal welfare nonprofit 501c3 organizations to earn their Veterinary Technician associate degree.

We are so excited to announce that Chiara Bonet, one of our veterinary assistants, was rewarded with this scholarship. The scholarship will cover all four semesters of the program, which is AVMA-CVTEA accredited.

This is an incredible opportunity to give a valued team member a step up in their career while expanding access to care.

CONGRATULATIONS Chiara!

Our very own Robin Post, received a surprise award at Animal Care Expo 2024: The HSUS Access To Care Visionary Award.

The HSUS Access to Care Visionary Award recognizes the significant contribution of one veterinary professional who has been innovative in their thinking, committed in their actions and inspirational to the profession.

In the words of Windi Wodjak, Director of Rural Area Veterinary Services - RAVS, "Robin has dedicated her career to expanding access to veterinary care in a variety of settings. She is a long-time HSVMA member and has participated in more than 30 RAVS field clinics. She has been a driving force in the evolution and expansion of the Animal Fix Clinic (AFC) and the organization’s work to provide access to high quality surgical services to all who need it. She recognizes the barriers many caregivers face in seeking care for their pets and does all that she can to support families and to foster the bond between animals and their people.

Robin is an outstanding leader and an inspiring mentor who works to empower and fully engage every member of the team. Over the past decade, hundreds of veterinary professionals and students have benefited from her supportive mentorship and been influenced by her model of exceptional care.

Her knowledge and commitment to professional development and accessible veterinary care are rooted in a deep compassion and proactive support of the human animal bond that make Robin a truly special and uniquely impactful veterinary professional. This is Mystic. She escaped her mom's RV one year ago. Her mom returned to the parking lot where Mystic was lost and called out her name for months. Recently, Mystic was brought in by a community member to be spayed. We scanned her for a microchip, and she had one! Mystic's mom registered her contact information with the microchip so that she could be reached if anyone found Mystic. Mystic's mom was so excited that they were finally reunited after a whole year apart.

Stubby came to us with matted fur and a leg injury that required amputation. His caretakers were very worried that Stubby would not be able to run and jump with only three legs. Stubby proved otherwise during his big-moment release. His caretakers sent us a video of his release, exclaiming, “He ran like a cheetah!”. They also report that Stubby has been seen around the neighborhood, making his usual rounds, and is doing great.

Thank you to his caretakers and Woody Feral Cat Support Group for helping Stubby recover.

On April 2nd, 2017, Dr Goh and Robin reopened the Fix Our Ferals clinic. From 8 cats that first day to an average of 30+ cats and dogs a day now, Animal Fix Clinic continues to grow so that we can help cats like Julio, who was featured in our last post.

“Julio, a community cat that showed up on my doorstep during peak kitten season. He was a feisty cat who was always getting into fights with the other feral cats. He was skinny, had patches of hair missing, and battle wounds to boot. It took me 3 attempts to trap him! I brought him to AFC to get neutered. After a few months of being neutered, Julio showed no interest in fighting anymore and he even allowed us to get some cuddles in. Julio has now retired…or semi-retired because if he doesn’t get his breakfast from us, he’s off to hunt. He loves lounging around in empty boxes and getting pets from us. He looks like a completely different cat. TNR has saved Julio from being in unnecessary fights and because of his ear tip, the neighbors know he's already been fixed.” -Julio’s caretaker

It's officially spring, and the dreaded “kitten season” is upon us! This month, we want to focus on our Community Cat TNR program.

Fix Our Ferals began as a community cat (Trap Neuter Return) TNR operation, and as Animal Fix Clinic, we are absolutely committed to preserving the TNR program as an affordable community service.

Our TNR program has helped thousands of neighborhood cats live healthier lives and has prevented countless litters of kittens.

This month, we would love to share posts about the many community cats we have helped, along with our favorite pictures and stories. If you have any pictures or stories to share, we invite you to do so!

Access to Affordable Surgery for Bay Area Cats and Dogs

Since 1998 Fix Our Ferals in Richmond, CA has served tens of thousands of San Francisco Bay Area low-income residents and partnered with many regional animal welfare organizations. Our mission is to humanely end overpopulation of cats and dogs in the Bay Area by making spay/neuter (SN) and crucial surgery accessible to them, regardless of their caretakers’ ability to pay. We promote trap-neuter-return (TNR) of free-roaming community cats and are part of the progressive animal welfare movement to keep cats and dogs out of crowded shelters by reducing populations of free-roaming cats and returning them to their colonies, and keeping companion cats and dogs in their homes. We believe that the cost of veterinary surgery should not be why a pet guardian should surrender their cat or dog to a shelter or why free-roaming cats continue to reproduce and later occupy space in over-crowded shelters, where they will likely be euthanized.
