It’s a pretty important week in the field of veterinary medicine this week!!! Our industry wouldn’t survive without amazing veterinary technicians, nurses & assistants!
Many times the vets get all the thanks, but it’s techs & staff working hard behind the scenes who keep clinics running smoothly. If you see a vet clinic staff member this week, tell them thank you for what they do!

Truck driver and his co-pilot reunited after their horrific semi-truck accident here in Post Friday afternoon.
God definitely had his protection around Joel and his best friend, Tiko!!
Tiko was touch & go the first 12-24 hours, but has miraculously pulled thru to walk away with his owners today. ❤️‍🩹🐕
Joel & Janese would like to thank everyone involved with the rescue and for all the prayers lifted in their behalf.
So happy both are doing well enough to travel home to finish recovery together. ❤️

*EXTREME HEAT ADVISORY FOR PETS*
PET FACT: Did you know dogs sweat thru their paws...NOT on their body?? This is why the surface they walk on is VERY important in this extreme heat. Hot asphalt/concrete will burn their paws and hinder their ability to sweat.
See the signs of heat stroke listed on the flyers below, and if your pet shows ANY of these symptoms, call your vet IMMEDIATELY!
Do NOT put your pet in ice water, or force cold water down their mouth!!
Get professional help as soon as possible as timing is crucial for a pet to survive heat stroke!!

🔥🔥🥵 Please, please make sure your outdoor pets have adequate shade and access to plenty of CLEAN, fresh water in this extreme heat!
‼️Watch for signs of heat exhaustion & heat stroke….restlessness or agitation, pacing, seeking shade or water, excessive drooling, increased heart rate, elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, abnormal gum color, bruising in the gums, may appear lethargic or disoriented, and can have seizures.‼️
This can occur FAST in animals and can be life threatening! Call your vet IMMEDIATELY if you suspect your pet may be suffering from heat related illness!

Our clinic will be closed on Wednesday, May 24th, as we transition to a new computer software program and install new lab machines.
Since our computer system will be unavailable and our staff needs training on these new programs, Dr Wink has decided closing for the entire day is best. Our phones will be forwarded to voicemail during this install and calls will be returned by staff after training is complete.
We apologize for the inconvenience and will re-open normal hours on Thursday, 5/25.

We will be in Crosbyton THIS SATURDAY, 5/20 at the Fire Dept from 9:00am-noon offering reduced rate vaccines. Animal Rescue of Crosby County is offering $15 microchips & the City of Crosbyton will be there with $4 city registration tags.
Cash, Card, Apple Pay will be accepted.
Pets MUST be on a leash or in a carrier to ensure the safety of all animals on premises.

🐾WE ARE HIRING 2 MORE FULL-TIME POSITIONS!! 🐾
We are adding 2 Veterinary Assistants to our full-time staff! Our hospital is a busy mixed-animal clinic seeing not only dogs & cats, but large animals such as horses, cattle and pigs.
Veterinary Assistants help the veterinarian(s) with office visits & exams, prepare vaccines & meds for appointments, take care of the everyday needs of pets in the hospital ward, and help maintain the hospital facility, keeping it neat and clean.
These openings are for Monday-Friday day shift working 8am-5pm (6pm on Thursdays). We offer on the job training, paid time off, 1/2 day off each week, along with other employee discounts/benefits.
Candidates must have a passion for animals, both large & small, with the willingness to learn to handle all types of pets and/or livestock. Assistants must possess good critical thinking & problem-solving skills, a positive attitude, and excellent communication and teamwork skills. Dependability and punctuality are a must!
Pay starts at $12.00/hr and may increase depending on qualifications and/or experience.

Someone has reported seeing a white dog on 84 near our clinic if anyone is missing their dog….
The passersby’s didn’t describe what the dog looked like or give many details other than it being a white dog.

This week is National Vet Tech Week and we are celebrating Lee Ann, Cheyenne, Anamaria...& ALL of the wonderful vet techs we've had in the past!!
Our clinic wouldn't function without these amazing people, and 1 week out of the year doesn't come close to showing our gratitude!
Vet techs are the backbone of any vet clinic. From nurse to phlebotomist to janitor, vet techs take on multiple roles throughout the day working with patients who can't verbally tell them what is hurting, who may bite, scratch, or tear a limb off, and who's owners may be difficult to deal with. Not to mention the girls here at GCAH have to put up with Dr. Wink!! 🤣🤣
The Wink family sends a big THANK YOU to these 3 incredible ladies this week!!!!🐾❤️ Be sure to thank your vet tech when you see them!!

Due to scheduling conflicts with other horse shows and youth sports activities, we are unable to host our annual Freestyle Reining show this year. 🙁
While we try to host this show in October to make finding costumes easier on parents, it is a very busy month between school sports & the Wink family showing their personal horses.
We will look at other date options for next year and possibly move the show up to mid-September, or even the week after Halloween, to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules.
We hope to see you, your horse & your costume in 2023!

Did you know veterinarians have one of the highest su***de rates in the nation? In fact our profession is listed at #4 just behind doctors, dentist & tied with police officers at odds of 1:54! This means 1 in 6 veterinarians have contemplated su***de. And it’s not just the vets, but staff who work alongside them as well.
Buried in debt from vet school, long hours, difficult cases, dealing with clients/patients, compassion fatigue, trying to run a business and handling their staff fatigue & burnout are just a few factors that lead to depression and su***de for many vets & staff. In fact, Dr. Wink has already lost a few of his own classmates due to this statistic.
This week remember your doctor, dentist, police officers, veterinarians, technicians, and MANY others who are fighting against these odds. Be kind. Tell them thank you. Tell them you are praying for them. Tell them something positive, because in the end…we are ALL human beings with feelings & emotions.
We love our Dr. Wink, and we are so proud he allows us to help fulfill his dream here at GCAH!

Veterinary professionals are very much at risk for compassion fatigue. Know the symptoms, and learn what you can do to combat compassion fatigue.

So proud of Dr. Wink’s oldest son, Kolton!
Even though Doc is an Aggie (hey, if Tech had opened their vet school 20years ago, it may have been a different outcome😂), he is VERY proud of what Kolton is accomplishing and GCAH is proud to be a sponsor for Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team!

Kolton (Pockets) Wink is a freshman from Post, TX majoring in animal science focusing on equine production. He is most excited about furthering his horsemanship and showmanship skills and making new connections. Kolton enjoys getting to spend time with all of his teammates. After graduation, he plans to start and train horses. Prior to the ranch horse team, Kolton showed in 4-H for ten years and worked with a lot of young horses. Kolton would like to thank his sponsors Wild West Trailers and Garza County Animal Hospital!

We can't wait to see what Kolton accomplishes this year!
