Imagine bleeding to death all from secondary poisoning due to rodenticide- those black boxes you see outside of (and inside) buildings - you are creating more of a problem because you are killings the natural predators- please spread the word.

This is one of those situations where I don’t put the before and after picture. The after picture is far too horrific to post, yet what happened is far too horrific to ignore…

This great horned owl and two of her babies were found deceased at the bottom of this tree. One owlette was on death’s door and was taken to Cape Ann Wildlife, Inc for care. Despite their best efforts, the remaining owlette was too far gone to save.

Lab results and a full necropsy would reveal what we already knew - they all died from secondary exposure to rat poison.

Only the father remains. He is left wondering why his entire family is gone. Unaware that some of the food he himself brought to his babies had poisoned them. There is no way for wildlife to know which rodents have been poisoned and which are safe to eat.

We were all devastated to learn about this incident. This Monday something HUGE happened to give me hope once more, that things may change…

On Monday, a coalition of Massachusetts residents petitioned the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources to immediately suspend the registrations of anticoagulant rodenticide products. The petition was prepared by the Harvard Animal Law & Policy Program.

The Clinic’s petition argues that anticoagulant rodenticides fail to meet the Massachusetts Pesticide Control Act’s registration standards because they cause “unreasonable adverse effects to the environment.”

I will include a link with more information in the comments. This is HUGE. Please spread the word. If MDAR makes the right call on this, so many wild animals could be spared in the future.

One of the MANY problems with NH Fish and Game is the bias of the department. Whether it be the commissioners or the staff, there are many at Fish & Game who only see animals as resources, objects, and for killing opportunities.

Jake DeBow is an employee at Fish & Game and his father is a commissioner. That right there is a conflict. In addition to that, the department uses Jake as a beaver spokesperson in promotional videos, making it seem like Jake is beaver friendly. However, Jake is a diehard trapper and just this year alone slaughtered close to 100 beavers including kits. He has bragged about trapping a breeding female and a kit, leaving the male and some kits for next year's trapping adventure. Jake also supports Safari Club International, has done interviews with them, and we all know that club is a trophy hunting bunch of thrill-killers. Safari Club International also foots money for projects and studies, clearly tainting any validity of those studies since that organization ALWAYS has an agenda.

We know Jake's father, Paul DeBow is the commissioner stating publicly he will petition to get back bobcat trapping and hunting in New Hampshire. With these kinds of minds at Fish & Game, there is zero chance of objectivity and fairness. The only goal is to create and sustain killing opportunities for hunters and trappers.

It may seem like we are picking on Jake and Paul DeBow, but we are really just trying to highlight the inequities within the department and the steep bias. We don't care about them on a personal level and do not wish ill of them, we just hate the bias and hypocrisy. Why do only the people who enjoy killing wild animals make all of the decisions about those animals? To be on the NH Fish & Game Commission you need to be a killer of wildlife, that is a requirement via the hunting/trapping/fishing license requirement. There are many qualified people who just choose not to kill the animals they study, that could not get on the Fish & Game Commission.

Eventually the camouflage and blaze orange wall will crumble. By design it kind of has to. The NH Fish & Game Department needs an overhaul because it is bleeding money and morale is low. Maybe if they start running things like they should in 2024 instead of acting like it is still the 1800s, things would get better.

Here is Jake with all the beavers he trapped this year. Through his lifetime, which could be many decades, he will potentially slaughter thousands of beavers. We know that a wildlife rehabber has a pregnant beaver currently in their care. It is probable that some of the female beavers trapped were pregnant since the season goes to April 10th and the gestation period is 3-4 months. We can guarantee trappers won't be uploading those gruesome pictures and videos and boasting about it!

A very sad update 💔The cat in Concord NH with the jar covering his entire head seen on March 20th running across 311 Clinton St and March 22nd between the Audubon Center and Pope Shelter on Silk Farm Rd, was found deceased on April 9th at The NH Audubon Center in their back parking lot by a very compassionate staff member. I had several cameras set in the area for 19 days but never saw him. He apperared to have died several days ago. I removed the clear plastic jar, he was a beautiful young black and white intact male. Pope Memorial shelter scanned for a chip and is holding him for 7 days. I can't stop thinking about the precious little one.

Did you know that the rodenticide in bait boxes can also kill anything that eats the poisoned animal? The terrible mange problems we see that coyotes and foxes suffer from are exacerbated by rodenticide poisoning as well, continuous small amounts of the rodenticide from eating affected prey causes a lowered immune response to mange. Many people don't know this, so here's a great article.

💙 Ralph 💙

* Ralph has a history of guarding from people but it is very specific - he previously growled when people closed his crate. He does not do this with people he is bonded to and feels secure with.
* Ralph previously growled when people approached him when he had a high value toy. This may come up again in a home but can be easily avoided with following a few simple rules like having high value toys outside or in crate when alone.
* Ralph is very loving and affectionate with his people and loves to play and learn.
* Ralph is VERY dog social and loves to play. We feel he'd be able to live with another dog but that dog would need to be very passive with resources and the humans would need to be diligent about feeding and playing with toys separately.
* Ralph has come a long way since he was first surrendered to us. With the lifelong management plan we provide and a patient family willing to follow and put in the work, we know Ralph will be the best version of himself.

Pets are curious animals that explore the world with their mouths. No matter how hard we try to prevent it, sometimes ingestion of a dangerous substance or object happens.

In just the last month alone, we’ve provided urgent care for patients who have ingested:

🥑 a whole bowl of avocados
🍫dark chocolate
🍬gum containing xylitol
🍩 an entire pan of brownies
🍇 grapes and raisins
🍗 half a rotisserie chicken, strings and all!
🦴 a 9 inch Nyla Bone!
⚾️ an entire package of Big League Chew

The good news? ALL of these patients made a full recovery, largely because of this one particular thing all of their parents did: they acted fast!

If your pet ingests a toxin or foreign body, time is of the essence! Don’t wait!

Call us right away to discuss the best next steps for your pet. Depending on the situation, next steps may include: an urgent appointment at our office, referral to an emergency hospital and/or referral to Pet Poison Control.

To familiarize yourself with common household dangers, visit the ASPCA Pet Poison Control website!

On March 13, 2024, Officer Reitze arrested Robert Gerhold, 60, of 7 Holly Lane, Londonderry, NH. After a months-long investigation into animal cruelty allegations and breach of bail, Officer Reitze completed a warrant for Gerhold.

In August 2023, Officer Reitze responded to a group of attached condominiums on Holly Lane for a neighborhood dispute. It was learned that Gerhold’s neighbors reported their condominiums were infested with fleas and could smell the strong odor of cat urine in their basements.

Officer Reitze determined that Gerhold had active bail conditions preventing him from possessing any animals from another animal cruelty case. After gathering additional evidence, a search warrant was granted for Gerhold’s residence.

Upon serving the search warrant, LPD located two living cats and five deceased cats. The two living cats had visible fleas crawling on them, and their living conditions were less than adequate. There was no indication that the cats were being treated for the flea infestation. The five deceased cats were in a container in the basement covered in dead and alive fleas.

All the cats were seized from the residence and brought to the Manchester Animal Shelter. The deceased cats were later transferred to the NH Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for a necropsy.

After the investigation, Gerhold was charged with seven counts of Animal Cruelty and seven counts of Breach of Bail.

Gerhold was held on preventative detention and was arraigned this morning at the Derry District Court

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

My Story

Welcome! The Bees Knees Animal Care and Dog Walking LLC was created by yours truly, (Sandy Dustin), when I saw the need in my community for animal care that includes pets with chronic and terminal illnesses. As a veterinary technician for 19 years who has had my own animals with severe medical challenges, I know how difficult it can be to find an experienced, trustworthy provider. I am certified in animal first aid and CPR, and am able to provide medications (such as insulin for diabetics) and treatments (for example, subcutaneous fluids for kidney disease) with patient and gentle efficiency. I am able to come to your home if you need to stay late at work, want a weekend escape or a vacation, and do not want or cannot board your beloved animal. I also offer care and dog walking for our healthy pets! Concord, Pembroke, Bow and Hopkinton NH are my service areas but please contact me if you are outside of my range and we can discuss a further plan. I do require a complimentary initial meet and greet consultation to make sure we are a good fit! The Bees Knees is registered in the state of NH and has bonding and liability insurance through the Business Insurers of The Carolinas. Thank you and I hope to meet you soon!
