Today’s Friday Finds is a collection of images from over the past year of Avian Metapneumovirus aka aMPV in egg layers.

A more recent emerging disease challenge in the US, aMPV is a virus that causes inflammation of the upper respiratory tract of most species of poultry. Some poultry see more problems associated with the disease than others (ahem… turkeys). Symptoms in layers are varied and can include ocular and nasal discharge, facial swelling, and just an overall not well-doing bird. As the disease progresses, it can lead to torticollis (twisting of the neck aka stargazing) and other neurological symptoms caused by inflammation of the inner ear.

Outright clinical signs, as shown, (thankfully) usually affect only a small percentage of a layer flock. Mortality is rarely seen, so long as there are no secondary bacterial challenges. The most notable findings of aMPV in layers is a decline in feed consumption (who wants to eat when they don’t feel well!) and drop in production (typically around 5-15%) that usually recovers in 4-6 weeks time.

In the photo, Kayleigh is wearing a yukata, a traditional Japanese garment, gifted to her by her host sister, Miyo, and her family.

🩸💉 The use of blood biomarkers takes poultry health a step beyond simply cutting birds and posting sessions. A field poultry vet's role can be so much more than poultry pathology and necropsy alone. 💉🩸

For laying hens, bone health and eggshell development are critical aspects of lifetime productivity, and calcium supplementation can be beneficial. But when does it become too much of a good thing?
