Why I support Laila Riazi

I have known Laila for many years. We have crossed paths at Progressive Cheverly, at the Community Market, the American Legion and Cheverly Day. Then I sat across the table from Laila for six years while on the Town Council. That’s where I really got to know her.

I’ve always been impressed with her thorough grasp of topics that come before the council. She researches the issues before the meetings and comes prepared with pointed questions that helps the whole council come up to speed on whatever the discussion is about. She is adept at drawing-out information and motivations from business folk and state/county officials that came before the Town Council. This is invaluable to all of us in town. It is easy to come into a discussion with preformed ideas. What is valuable is to walk away with an understanding that you weren’t expecting to have. She has helped me to learn how to not draw conclusions before I have heard all possibilities. This is so important to the well-being of our town. Experience, wisdom and judgement.

Laila is forthright. She communicates back to her constituents and interested parties. Communication with constituents is always in the forefront of an elected official’s mind, with thought of their next election. This isn’t her motivation. She does it to share. This is an essential part of Laila. She also will take the time and respect to make sure that residents understand the truth of what happens. Justice for everyone is the principle that guides her actions.

Laila invests her heart to her calling for service.

I have to add that she has been the organizer for the Holiday Tree Lighting Party in December. Every year children in Cheverly start their holiday season by enjoying carols sung by their peers, eat gingerbread men while drinking hot cider, make cards for the deployed members of our military, enjoy a Yule Log and light the tree in Legion Park. The first Friday night of December is one of the happiest nights of the year in our town. Laila is the quiet organizer behind it all.

I hope to see you at the poll Monday. If you need a lift to the Town Hall to vote, call me for a ride. (240) 696-1176

I support Laila for mayor of Cheverly.

"I served with Laila on the Cheverly Town Council and there isn't another resident of this town as committed to public service and community. She has the patience to stick with issues that take time to resolve and the cooperative spirit to organize and inspire people around issues of importance. Laila will make a top notch mayor." -Mary Jane Coolen

Moving forward...

I was privileged to serve as a Councilmember for three terms representing Cheverly’s Ward Two. I am grateful to my friends and look to further engage in civic and social causes as we move on working to make Cheverly, the County, and Maryland a better place for us all.
