A Hands-On Multispecies Workshop for Dog Trainers
This is a full-day workshop designed for trainers who want to continue improving their overall training skills by working with species other than dogs and cats, including equines, cows, goats, pigs, and poultry. Students will practice developing training plans and hone their applied skills by teaching multiple species a variety of skills.
In addition to providing dog trainers with this unique access to other animals, we will share how to integrate these skills into a behavior modification plan. For dog trainers, there are a myriad of benefits to working with other species, including expanding your applied skill set, improving your timing, and learning to find “outside the box,” creative solutions for animals that have not been specifically selected for biddability or sociability.
Topics covered include:
✔️ Information on species-typical behavior, ethology, and considerations for working with each type of animal
✔️ Selecting target behaviors and developing a training plan using ABA-style criteria
Hands-on training work with equines, poultry, cows, goats, and pigs
✔️ Implementing, assessing, and adjusting training plans based on feedback from instructors and classmates
✔️ Troubleshooting and creative problem-solving when working with behaviors that have to be done (husbandry or cooperative care behaviors)
