DO DOGS SUFFER FROM BOREDOM?
Animal welfare lecturer Charlotte Burn, from The Royal Veterinary College, observed dogs left alone at home before publishing an essay entitled Be***al boredom: a biological perspective on animal boredom and suggestions for its scientific investigation, in which she states that “Chronic inescapable boredom can be extremely aversive, and under stimulation can harm neural, cognitive and behavioural flexibility.” She told The Times: “They often yawn, bark, howl and whine. Some sleep a lot – a sign of apathy. Some of this is anxiety but often they are just really bored.”

Take Your Dog to School

A bored dog, lacking appropriate mental and physical stimulation may get himself into trouble by looking for ways to entertain himself. “Animals in barren conditions seek even aversive stimulation, as if bored.” (Burns, 2017). Problematic behaviors such as digging, incessant barking and inappropriate destructive chewing may be a dog’s way of alleviating boredom and easing anxieties.

It's Official - Summer is Here!
Here are a Few Tips for Entertaining Your Dog When It’s Hot!
Play with your dog in the water - A paddling pool, a stream, a local dog beach… Please note that although the water will help your dog stay cool, you should still avoid the hotter parts of the day!

Go for a walk - First thing in the morning before it gets hot or last thing at night when it has cooled down.

Enjoy a fun outing together - Visit your local air-conditioned pet-friendly store! We are sure that your canine pal will enjoy helping you purchase a few treats and toys!

Play “Find It” games - Hide some nutritional treats and cue your dog to “find”. Tip: Initially make the game easy by ‘hiding’ the food in plain sight!

Say “yes” for success! - Place some treat pots around your home and reinforce all the lovely behaviors that you see throughout the day.

Provide puzzle toys - From a yummy stuffed Kong to a LickiMat covered in delicious doggy ‘ice-cream’… There are lots of fabulous interactive feeding toys that can help provide extra canine enrichment!

SUMMER IS HERE! PROTECT YOUR PETS AGAINST HEATSTROKE

Summer is when dogs are most at risk of being affected by heatstroke. A dog’s normal body temperature is 100°F to 102.5°F but, unlike humans, dogs do not have sweat glands throughout their skin. Their only methods for cooling include limited sweat glands on the pads of their feet and nose, and panting. Both of which are inefficient at cooling their body temperature in extreme situations. If a dog cannot effectively dissipate heat, their internal body temperature begins to rise. Once the dog's temperature exceeds 104° damage to their body's cellular system and organs may become irreversible. With heatstroke the cells literally cook.

Click the link below to read more about the some of the signs of heatstroke, and some tips if you suspect your dog is over heating.

Summer is a great time to introduce your dog to a pool!

No matter what size pool let your dog explore it at there pace, never force your dog to get into the water, even if it's only a few inches deep.

If you have a larger pool you may want to invest in a life jacket, and or may want to introduce your dog to the pool while it's wearing a harness.
That way if your dog gets in and panics or needs assistance you can grab the harness and help them out.

Great ways to introduce them to a pool, join them, add toys some that float some that sink , just be cautious and prepared some dogs will go under the water to grab those toys.

Encourage them and make it really fun anytime they check out the pool even if it's just sniffing the side of it, or looking at the water in it.

Be sure you always supervise your dog around any body of water.

Allow them to choose when they want to exit the water, and give them tools to help make exiting easier in larger pools.

Keep swimming sessions short.

Have fun making memories with your dog!!

Your Puppy Socialization

SOCIALIZATION is the process of introducing a puppy to the world in a way that will help him be confident and unafraid of people, places and things that he will encounter throughout his life. The most critical socialization window occurs before the age of 12 weeks, and that window is considered to be closing by 5 months. Generally the younger the puppy is when he is socialized, the more quickly and easily he gains confidence. Waiting too long can result in a need for the more difficult process of rehabilitation instead of socialization. Most aggression issues are simply a result of inefficient socialization.

What does your dog interact with that is not on the list?
