Good morning friends!
Our wonderful horse hauler and friend, Tracey Savich, has been the recipient of a GoFundMe campaign by Cathy Maltz. Yesterday, she was involved in a horrific horse accident. There is no insurance coverage for any of her expenses.
It was an incredibly tragic accident to witness. As the horse lay on top of her, it kicked her in the head and stomach. She has a broken pelvis and a large laceration on the back of her head. Her friend, who was trying to assist her, was kicked in the face by the horse. They are both in Harbor General Hospital. I am pleased to report that both girls are doing ok. Please circulate this Gofundme for Tracey.
I would like to request that our prayer warriors pray for her. It would be greatly appreciated if all of us would pray for her recovery.
Thank you so much 🙏🙏

Hi, my name is Cathy, and I’ve created this fundraiser for a sweet wonderful person… Catherine Cross needs your support for Tracey Savich in her time of need.

"The image was created as I stopped to chat with the farriers while driving past the shoeing bay at a stable. It made me realize I need to take more opportunities to capture the moments with all the participants sharing our equestrian passion. Mailani Rachael DeYoung keeps the equine athletes going!"

Ok H/J industry …we need to pay attention… the NFL is calling for artificial turf to be removed in all stadiums …WHY? Because injuries on AT are 65% higher and more catastrophic than seen on GRASS!

We put these artificial surfaces in because we are not willing to do the work to keep grass or in our case - drag daily or even more often - our natural sand rings. Vets, farriers and the equine insurance industry have all stated that these artificial footings are causing a rise in micro tears within the hoof capsule, side bone injuries, suspensory issues and shoulder/back and stifle injuries.

A horse’s hoof is meant to SCOOP dirt and fling it so it gives ….these new ring additives do not allow this to happen so the force of landing and cantering across these footings is then moved into the horse - ever notice there are NO divots? Or not as much dirt to clean off your horses belly?

Also … because we think these footings are superior we do not drag as often nor water enough - so the footing gets thick, gummy and gooey - you can feel the sludgy texture when you walk across the schooling area …

We have seen racetracks starting to study the increase in fractures and career ending catastrophic injuries in race horses on these same artificial products

We have seen increases in cases of bacterial infections such as scratches - does this fabric additive hold bacteria??

Did you know that if you sell your equine property your new fangled ring footing is considered hazardous waste? It cannot be disposed or removed without special handling as other equine properties disappear into development some have been sued by the new owner when it costs thousands to clear this material away

We have seen more tragic injuries from even simple falls because of horses tripping in the sludge or the impact of a fall not being as absorbed by a naturally giving material

Something we need to pay attention to - yet - we keep seeing more and more of it even though a lot of horseman and well qualified people are seeing huge issues …WHY?

We are fooling ourselves into thinking any footing can be low maintenance - footing is crucial and whether it’s protecting and seeding your grass field and rolling out divots or dragging your 131 screenings while keeping it watered properly … even the new footings require manure to be removed and must be watered and dragged properly to be cared for

This is just my opinion and I am sure many will disagree with me …but…. I think we should all pay attention

If you don’t use breakaway halters, this is yet another reason to start.

Since the explosion of urban farms, backyard homesteading, and privately built chicken coops because of the lockdowns and crazy high price of eggs it should come as no surprise that they will try to make all of this more difficult and more expensive.

You can do the vast majority of farming and aviculture without any medication‘s, but in some rare cases the meds and antibiotics necessary to keep a flock healthy will no longer be available at your local feed and grain store as of June 11th. You will now be required to get a prescription any time your chickens need attention.

I suggest stocking up and voting with your dollars.

We have seen a ton of fiddleneck on the trails on the PV Peninsula. Watch what your horses are grazing on when you’re trail riding.

Fiddleneck (Amsinckia menziesii) is one of several species of Amsinckia, which are annual broadleaved or short-lived perennial plants that are native to the Americas. Young fiddlenecks appear as rosettes, which develop into upright or semi-upright stems as it matures. Fiddleneck Toxic Components All...

I recently saw a video posted by For Farriers By Farriers with a really cool story attached. I'm not sure how true it is, but I'll paraphrase it here.

Pablo Picasso was having a drink at a cafe one day when a woman recognized him. She approached him and asked if he was really the famous artist Picasso; when he nodded that yes, he was, she handed him a pencil and napkin and insisted he do a quick sketch for her.
After a few minutes of drawing, he handed the napkin back to her, asking for a large sum of money for the sketch. The woman was shocked, and asked him how he could charge so much for something that took him 5 minutes.
Picasso replied, "My dear, you're wrong. It took me 40 years to be able to do this in 5 minutes. If it was simply a matter of a pencil, a napkin, and 5 minutes, you would have done the sketch yourself."

With recent talks of hoofcare pricing, I think the conversation needs to shift away from simply a matter of time, tools, and materials. We need to consider the years of work, perspective, and experience it takes to get to that point. Often, 10% of what you pay is for what is removed from the hoof, and the other 90% of what you pay is for the experience and knowledge of recognizing what to leave where, and why.

Print this blanket guide out and put it at your barn. Now that it's cooled down, we come across horses that are over heating and in distress because they are not blanketed correctly. Please use this handy chart.

The Riderless Horse: one of the oldest and most moving military traditions in a full honor funeral is the riderless, caparisoned horse. The horse is led behind the caisson wearing an empty saddle with the rider’s boots reversed in the stirrups, indicating the warrior will never ride again.
Let’s all join in this Memorial Day weekend to remember the heroes we have lost and the families they leave behind.

This horse snowshoe is a such a great find😍 We discovered it on the ice surface in the Lendbreen pass. Check out the preservation!❤ Looks like it was lost yesterday, but the radiocarbon date (just in) begs to differ: It was lost in the 3rd century AD, at the very beginning of the use of the pass😮 The unlucky horse with only three snowshoes left was one of the first pack animals to cross the Lendbreen ice.
