Well, our first open volunteer day was an incredible success and I am flabbergasted by how much we got done. We are so grateful to these old friends and new friends of the sanctuary who united today to: install window inserts and door flaps in the pig barn, insulate the steer stall, build a threshold in each end of the ruminant barn, insulate the duck house roof, install the windbreaks for the horses, AND build and install a whole new windbreak side which I wished we had about a thousand times last winter when the right side of everyone was covered in snow. We are so grateful to the 18 people (!) who gave their Saturday to the sanctuary and to our residents to ensure a warm and safe winter. I can’t express how much it means to us. This is work that would have taken our tiny team so much time and energy. We are so grateful to everyone who gave so much today.

Feel free to roll your eyes at this, but in the last ten years I’ve picked up a major fear of heights. Definitely not by choice and not by reason. But it’s the real deal, and it means that I have avoided climbing into the hayloft of the ruminant barn, which is only accessible via one very teeny tiny ladder, since it was built. In May. So I wait for Andy or Melinda to throw hay down, which is suboptimal. Especially for Bertie, who told me tonight that he doesn’t care about phobias nearly as much as he cares about hay. So enough was enough, and I climbed up there, threw down hay, did some deep breathing, and very very very carefully climbed back down. Fear is not a good decision maker, and I don’t want it in my driver’s seat. So many of our residents came here terrified. I’m glad I could overcome my own fear today to serve them. And no, I’m not going to do a metaphor about how nice the view is up there or anything. I did not look.

You may be interested in either absorbing some peace from a horse or a goat, or in hitting something with a hammer, so please remember that you can do either of those things at our open volunteer day this Saturday from 9 to 3. Please use the RSVP link on our website’s Events page so we know to expect you. This day will get all our residents set up for winter, and we really can’t do it without our community. We’ll provide the vegan chili and goat cuddles.

Let’s talk about cow hair. Did you know that cows have these little toupees on their polls? I love them so much, and I love the character it adds to their faces. Otis’s is the frazzled dad hair; he’s also got the thickest, most luxurious bangs. Bertie is the guy who moved out of his parents’ house but still lets his mom cut his hair. Jordan is all business: neat and tidy. And Jake has blonde surfer bangs. I love this family, and I love how they take care of each other. You can see that here in the way Jake is grooming his big brother Bertie. Who do you think has the best hair?

Abby is celebrating the end of Daylight Saving Time today. The shorter days change a number of things around here, and one of them is what time we start putting goats to bed. Despite this being the EXACT SAME TIME they go to bed every night, relative to the sunrise and sunset, they make sure to make the fall evenings a challenge for us. I will simply say that some goats were well behaved for bedtime, and some head-butted the stall door open twice and escaped before we could lock it, and wanted to bet on Best Of Three head-butting combat to determine if they really truly had to go to bed. Goats are outstanding.

This rainy day in October, the goats are very grateful for their new barn. Goats, or at least our goats, do not go out when it rains. Or snows. Or drizzles. Having a porch for them means that they’re not going to spend entire days inside their stuffy stall, making it stuffier. They are so happy to stand together watching the rain from the cover of their beautiful porch. Another way this new barn, built by a grant from the Doree Taylor Charitable Foundation, is life-changing. Rain rain, you can stay. Our barn protects us every day.

As I spend time catching up on inside things today, I just need to share this about Bruce and Little Steven Van Zandt. I’ve written before about these boys and how they came to us last winter, first Stevie (orange) and then Bruce. I’ve written about how terrified and feral they were, how much time it took for Stevie to let me reach a hand to feed him without hissing and swatting at me. How long I watched them each on the camera before I could catch either of them. And I always think about the vet who told me each time that they would never be indoor cats. I love vets and I respect them. But I’m so glad that this guy was wrong. Bruce’s love for Stevie is so profound. He came to us so covered in mats from being in survival mode that he had to be completely shaved. He loves to groom himself now, and his brother as well. So grateful they both found their way to us.

It is COLD today, but we had a great afternoon with our high school cohort, who helped us muck out the goat and steer stalls, replace some pig gates, and of course give the goats some much-deserved love. The goats’ love buckets are always empty, so they very much enjoyed being able to “help” our students clean out their house today and get some extra scritches.

Harriet came to us in the summer of 2023, a terrified and shut down baby. She was the most frightened pig I’d ever met, and it took a long time for her to trust us— she actually still won’t accept tummy rubs, but look at her today. Relaxed out in the sun, surrounded by her big pig family, yawning and stretching and going back to sleep. Petunia took part of her nap on my lap, which made me so happy even as my legs fell asleep. Uninterrupted time with our residents— not running around working, but sitting with them, listening to their breaths, watching them live, seeing the world from their perspective— is necessary to this work. I’m grateful for the moments I can do it.

This is the face of a young man who feels very strongly that I should be bringing him more hay. Sometimes the boys don’t like their round bale. Who knows why. Jake, Jordan, and Otis will eat it anyway. Bertie will eat it, too, but only after lodging deafening complaints and following us around to tell us how unhappy he is with our service. (Tonight, because he stopped bellowing at me, I did give him a flake off a square bale. I’m easy.) I tried to placate him by offering a taste of pumpkin. I think his face makes his opinion clear. Berties don’t eat pumpkins. Pigs do though, and we handed out some pumpkin bites today. Lilac especially deserves some nice treats for how patiently she lets Andy care for her hooves. And can I just say how beautiful Grummy’s relationship with Stardust is? Look at them alllmost snuggling. Grummy may be done with his bachelor days. I’m so glad they’ve found each other.

Why Offer Sanctuary?

Darrowby Farm Sanctuary provides a lifelong home for farmed animals in need of safety and love. In 2019 alone, hundreds of animals were seized from neglect and abuse in Maine. Thanks to the work of animal shelters and animal welfare laws, domestic animals have a fair chance of escaping these horror stories. Unfortunately, farmed animals have fewer legal protections, fewer advocates, and fewer places capable of taking them in.

We believe that all livings creatures deserve the respect and security that comes from having a single loving home. We are proud to provide this home for our animals who would otherwise have very different fates.
