This past fall we purchased a cute little buckskin mare, Ellie May Hancock.
Cole had seen “Ellie” in a sales catalog and really liked her pedigree, she is bred just how we like our mares, and better yet, she is buttermilk buckskin.
After reading Ellie’s write up, we initially had the intent of implementing her into our program as a broodmare only. Her ad stated she wasn’t for beginners, and would require hock, stifle injections, and a regular ulcer guard regimen. Fairly uncommon for what have seen in her bloodlines, but there are always special cases.
Upon purchasing “Ellie” the rider who was showcasing her at the sale stated she had had her in her care for the last couple months and had no idea why her ad mentioned what it did, as she had never experienced any of what was noted.
We decided we would ride her for a bit when we got her home to gage for ourselves what she was or wasn’t. Cole went to using this mare, and using her hard. We had pressed and pressured and tried to get this mare to crack. Show a flaw, a lameness, anything. And she continued to get better and better. We have ranched on this mare, roped on this mare, put our children on this mare, she is as sweet as the day is long and not a hair out of place.
When our consignments for the Salmon Select Sale were due, we were short two horses. We have a lot of young horses we have raised in training, but not ready to be sold. We typically like to take one ranch mare to the sale, and “Ellie” truly was a better fit then the initial one we had intended.
The Salmon Select Sale does not require a pre purchase exam or radiographs to be done. We elected to have these done on “Ellie”. And guess what…they are clean. There is no evidence of needing any sort of lameness maintenance or injections. As for the ulcer guard treatment, we haven’t given her a single dose since we have owned her, but what we did
