Mr. Chico is looking for a wonderful home!
This handsome guy is a 4.5 year old Warmsprings Reservation gelding. Unfortunately due to a change in my schedule, I have not been able to work with him as much as I’ve been wanting to and he deserves someone who can be consistent. He is very smart and super sweet but still decently wild. Chico stands tied, I can brush his entire body and we’re working on having his legs handled (he’s picking this up very quickly). He needs an experienced home and will have a small rehoming fee. Happy to give interested people more details on this boy. 😊

Broken Outlaw has a rare boarding opportunity available.
What we offer:
12x12 stalls with attached run, daily turnout, use of arena and roundpen. Opportunity to tag along when I haul out.
We are seeking someone with 1-2 horses looking for a laid back board situation. Partial care/self care preferred but may consider full care for the right situation. Must have availability to take care of the place on occasion (would mainly be for a day or weekend).
PM us for more info!

Chico’s first session in the roundpen was a major success! In about five minutes he picked up “whoa” and turning into me when swtiching directions, instead of away from me. He even is starting to understand the basics of join up. It’s very clear this boy is super smart and very soft/sensitive to body language. After our session, I left him in the roundpen to hangout while I was finishing up with chores. When I try to catch him his first instinct is usually still to try to run away but tonight he actually walked up to me, almost to say “yeah yeah lady, I know it’s time to eat, bring me in!” Video in the comments of some great baby steps in working towards join up.

About two weeks ago I stumbled upon an ad on Craigslist titled “free 3 year old mustang”. I always get nervous when finding horses advertised for free considering how convincing kill buyers can be. It made me even more nervous to read his ad and find out he was barely handled and still very much wild. I won’t go into detail but this guy has not had a great introduction to humans. This 3 year old Warm Springs Reservation horse stole my heart the moment I saw his pictures. He has extremely kind eyes and now that I’ve gotten to know him better, I’ve come to find he is so willing and sweet, which is amazing considering his past with humans. I will be helping this boy learn to trust and eventually starting him under saddle, he will be up for adoption once he’s ready. Also any name suggestions are appreciated, I’ll post some pictures of him in the comments! 💛

Hard to believe it’s nearly been a week since we saw the worst of the ice storm. We luckily only had a few trees fall here and some very minor fence damage. We are still without power so waters are being filled by hand. Horses were only getting turned out in the arena to stay clear of ice and falling limbs but are happy to be back outside as of yesterday.

As someone who grew up riding ba****ck more than in a saddle, I get super excited when clients request some ba****ck work on their ponies! This is cash’s first time being hopped on ba****ck without a mounting block so I’m just testing the waters to make sure he’s comfortable with it. He’s a sensitive guy in general and a little spooky of the extra leg pressure so we’re just walking and trotting ba****ck for now. This boy has been SO much fun! 💛

With around 60 days under saddle here, Sulphur Springs mustang Cash was ready for his first outing. Although the teeter totter was scary, he handled himself like a champ with passing horses, joggers and folks walking dogs. Proud of this boy!
P.S we’ve got two stalls open next month, nows the perfect time to get your horse tuned up and ready to hit the trails when the nice weather rolls around! 🌞🐴

Edit to add: this post is not about guilt tripping anyone for not having 24/7 group turnout. You don’t need to justify your horses’ living situations. The perfect ideal for a grazing herd animal is turnout on large plots of land with friends but we don’t live in a perfect world. This is about being aware of, and making adjustments as needed, to better the lives of horses living in modern barns and boarding establishments by not continue to build said places with the intent of limiting all contact between horses, well intentioned or not. Open air stalls that allow for horse-horse contact are very much possible even in an unideal 24/7 stall situation and have been shown in studies to improve welfare and lower occurrence of stereotypic behaviours. There are ways to enrich and improve living even in circumstances that are abnormal for herd animals to live in. I think it is silly for horse people to be so afraid of being wrong that they won’t acknowledge some of the shortcomings of modern horse care or feel attacked by posts that simply outline some of the well documented issues in said care. This is not an attack, but we cannot grow and learn if we don’t discuss the realities of the horse world.

We need to start to completely revolutionize the manner in which we view the construction of horse farms. We need to start questioning the whys behind a lot of the traditional layouts frequently depicted in our day to day adventures at riding farms or within movies and TV shows.

When you start to look a little closer, you’ll realize how often the intent behind the structures of stalls or paddocks is to increase the isolation of the horse. We board up stall walls to the ceiling, no windows and no ability for the horse to see or touch their stall neighbour, unless, perhaps, they can just look out a front window at the horse across a wide aisle way from them.

We build paddocks with gaps between them thwt do not allow for horses to touch each other over the fence. The closest the horses can get to each other is merely interacting via sight or sound. They can vocalize and they can stare, but they can’t engage in some of their most prevalent calming and bonding herd behaviours like mutual grooming or playing with each other.

More often that not, we also encourage the concept of isolated turnout on top of this, viewing group turnout as too dangerous or risky for potential of injuries and when this is done, it is often done without comment about the negative implications associated with complete isolation of a herd animal.

These are all things that are so normalized and ingrained in us that not many question it. Even the entire concept of stalls is a funny one, something many horse people view as for the horse but in reality, the horses don’t need stalls, the humans do. Horses merely need shelter and if we were following species specific protocol, such shelter would be provided with available space extending past a 12x12 average.

I understand the world is modernizing and that space in many cities is limited but the problem with how widespread the lack of realization of how far off equestrian center architecture is from promoting the needs of the horse is that if people aren’t even aware of the shortcomings of said farms, they can’t think to enrich the lives of their horses. You’re not going to think about improving on something you can’t see an issue with in the first place.

While, in a perfect world, horses would be in group turnout in herds 24/7 in large fields with access to shelter, thereby giving them full autonomy to seek said shelter, there are things we can do to make traditional living healthier for the horse. For example, building more open air stalls with bars between stalls that allow horses to see and interact with each other. Shared fence lines on paddocks whenever possible so that even in individual turnout, it isn’t completely isolated. Less structured feed times, more free choice hay. There are options out there but we need to actually look critically at why the change is necessary.

People also justify this isolation and cooping up of horses to prevent socialization on the basis of horse to horse aggression. “My horse doesn’t like other horses” or “if they can see the horse beside them, they’ll attack them” and once again, this is yet another example of WHY we need to learn and start to incite change. This aggression and these stress behaviours that are often present and driving the aggression exist for a reason. Stereotypic behaviours are more rampant in facilities that isolate horses and prevent adequate movement for a REASON. We can’t keep viewing the symptoms of the problem as separate from a problem.

I often see/hear people saying once a horse reaches a certain age, they become “untrainable” or set in their ways. Most the time people think a horse that’s over 10 will never have a successful life under saddle. Maizy is proof that is just nonsense! This 12-15 year old pony mare is going great undersaddle, all of our hard work on the ground is paying off! 💪🏻

Some great progress made for everyone today. Cash had his first ride in the arena. We practiced going straight, lots of walk/trot transitions, stopping and suppling around. Maizy is really starting to open up and let her walls down which is a huge step in the right direction. Isabella was only saddled for the first time two days ago, she’s already letting me step up on her without an issue. She’s retaining information well and progressing quickly.

What a successful rainy day! 5 year old TWH Isabella arrived yesterday to be started undersaddle. Shes learning how to respond to my body language while free lunging, turning into me instead of away when switching directions and even let me saddle her for the first time. Maizy, the 12-15 year old pony mare is starting to make some really great progress. This little lady was rescued from slaughter awhile back. She’s pretty reactive but learning to trust. She will be available for adoption once she completes her training, PM us for details. Cash, the 6 year old Sulphur Springs gelding is making awesome progress. He had about 20 rides prior to arriving but was pretty fearful undersaddle. We’ve been taking things slow and building his confidence. His owner did a wonderful job with his training which has helped him adapt here rapidly.

“Ash”
Warmsprings Reservation mustang is looking for a wonderful forever home. Ash stands at 14.2hh and is 5 years old. She bonds hard with her people and needs an experienced home. Ash would do best with someone who spends lots of time with her on the ground before getting on. She is not a horse that anyone can just hop on without an issue.
Pros:
She’s w/t/c under-saddle and is an awesome, confident little trail horse. Very sweet on the ground. Super comfy gates and very soft in the face. Stands tied for hours, easy to load/unload and picks up all 4 feet.
Cons:
After about 60 days undersaddle, she had a new rider try to hop on her and unfortunately bolted from fear. She sat for a few months after this and is just getting back into training. She has lots of fear and anxiety from the ordeal she’s currently overcoming. More than happy to go into detail for interested adopters.

Before, during, and after of Ash’s session today. Today was the first day we did w/t/c under saddle. The Mascot for our page is officially back in training. After some time off, Hatchett Jack picked up right where we left off over 6 months ago. For those of you that are new here, Hatchetts a previously wild mustang from the BLM that I briefly started under saddle at the beginning of last year. At the time, I was apprenticing for a trainer and couldn’t spend as much time training my own horses as I’d like. Even with the MAJOR inconsistency, Hatchett made great progress. With over 6 months of time off, I anticipated working out some quirks when I went to hop on him the other night. Safe to say this boy was a total angel. Amazing what a solid foundation can do! 💛
