This!❤️

I've had this mental image for at least a year and thanks to Doggie Drawings by Lili Chin it has finally been manifested!

To me, these are the three most important pillars of working with a dog, especially a fearful one. We want to build Confidence, Agency, and choices in our dogs.

BE INFORMED…… Don’t impulse buy.

Paw It Forward’s 10 𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝘽𝙤𝙬 𝙊𝙣 𝙄𝙩 🎁

Before you impulse buy a puppy for a gift, call me. Make your Decision based on rational logical choices. I will help you compartmentalize the lifestyle the puppy needs and the lifestyle you can give, to make the right decision.

1. Your bow tied fuzzy is a 10-15+ year commitment with all the expenses including training, grooming, vetting, boarding, and surgeries & recoveries. Know this.

2. The adult owner’s choices are responsible for the dog’s behavior, always. Own it. Training will help you make the right choices.

3. Crate training is a must for newly adopted or purchased puppies. It’s non-negotiable. Don’t get caught up in the fairies and rainbows experts. You’ll regret it. Get preventative training.

4. Educate yourself in canine genetics. Even hard core breeds CAN do well as pets when they come from GOOD genetics. Bad genetics is often difficult to clean up aggression, even with training.

5. Puppies do NOT need 100% free roam, lots of dogs, people and OVER socialization. They need you to make responsible choices for them. Over expose, and enjoy a dog that pays no attention to you. Train early.

6. Ask yourself ahead of time, is anyone going to be allergic? Expecting a baby? Planning on moving? Live in a no pets allowed apartment? Works long hours? Already has a dog reactive dog? Adopting an aggressive dog to “save it.” These are the “reasons” dogs are given up RIGHT AFTER THE NEW YEAR. Plan ahead.

7. Educate yourself in breed traits. There’s lots of breed information available online. Know the pros and cons for your lifestyle. For example, a border collie or cattle dog may not make a good family companion with small kids. That Cane Corso isn’t going to be stranger friendly. Choose wisely. That husky puppy? Yeah, call me. I’ve owned 6. Let me enlighten you.

8. Drop the “my puppy must love everything and everyone” expectations. Most dogs are selective. It’s normal.

9. Steer clear of MOST free roam only high volume, low staffed daycares. They will expect your puppy to never defend itself, never growl, never nip and love everyone and everything. This sets up dogs to bully, be pushy or be bullied as the “norm.” It’s a breeding ground for dog reactivity and poor behavior.

10. The leash is your friend. YOU are responsible for controlling movement. What you allow to happen wlll happen. Bad behavior is YOUR choice to allow. Read that again.

Research! Adopt safe adoptable dogs or invest in a good reputable breeder and good training now to save you a lot of money and heartache later. I’m here to help 🐾

Sniffing Is Super Important 🐶❗

It benefits your dog's overall well-being (and longevity!) when you give them a chance to sniff and explore the world through their nose while walking. So, as often as you can, take your dog on a scent walk and let them satisfy their sniffer.

Check out today’s free article (link below) to learn why it’s crucial for dogs to go on regular sniffing adventures.

❌ ✨ DOG TRAINERS AREN'T MAGIC.

Sorry to disappoint.

🧙🏼 However, if a trainer is properly educated, trained, up-to-date on canine behavior, possess a highly developed set of skills and properly continues their education they are likely on their way to being really good or are already incredibly good at their set craft.

📝 So what’s different between a skilled trainer and a dog owner? Simple. Skills and knowledge in their field.

💪🏼 But let's be real. All dog trainers started somewhere. Usually this was as a struggling dog owner that wanted to really launch into learning how to truly help their own dog in some way. So, they sought out what was necessary to do that. Then they decided that there are lots of other dog owners just like them and they want to share their knowledge and skills to help!

🧘🏼 But, but, but . . . All a dog trainer can do is coach, show, teach, educate and guide.

👉🏼 Only you can put into action all that lovely information, utilize those skills and reach out for help when you need it so you can rinse and repeat.

👉🏼 You'll have to do all that "consistency is key" stuff us dog trainers are always droning on about and "practice here and there and everywhere" stuff too.
That will all be on you.

🤷🏼‍♀️ Otherwise you’ll have to settle for watching your dog seemingly always "listen" to your trainer and blow you off or not do it as easily as he does with your trainer.

🙌🏼 If your trainer can do it, so can you. Both are humans with brains and skills, you just have to do it like your trainer told you to. That's all.

Dog trainers don’t possess any magic. What they do possess, if they’re good at their craft, is a highly developed set of skills. But remember, at one point they knew very little, and likely got into this line of work because they were struggling with their own dogs.

So what’s different between a skilled and knowledgeable dog trainer and a struggling owner? Yep, you guessed it, skills and knowledge.

These people that you now hire for help were once struggling much like yourself. What did they do? They developed within themselves—likely with the help of another dog trainer—what was necessary to be able to solve their problems, and now, with all that ability, they help others with theirs’.

But, and this is a big but, all they can do is help. They can share information, teach skills, coach, and root you on—but only you can put in the work to take what is being shared and make it something personal, integrated, and useful.

You don’t have to become a dog trainer, but you do have to become a skilled, and knowledgeable owner—to whatever extent needed to match your goals.

Otherwise you’ll have to settle for watching your dog “magically” excel with your trainer, and “mysteriously” deteriorate with you.

CRATES ARE NOT JUST FOR PUPPIES

I hear very frequently that crates are taken away when a puppy becomes housetrained or is no longer destructive. But these aren’t the only reasons crates can be used - adult dogs can benefit from crates as well!

Here are some common scenarios of why crating can be maintained through adulthood and what it offers:

🏠 A safe space to retreat to and not be bothered.
‼️ Emergencies.
🫣 A place to hide for fearful dogs.
✏️ Teaching boundaries.
🍽 A location to eat in peace.
🐕 Preventing fights in multi dog households.
🚫 A secure place to confine to prevent aggression.
🎀 Limited freedom and decompression for new dogs.
🔇 Getting into the habit of “turning off.”
🚙 Travel.
🌬 Hurricanes.
☝🏽 Maintaining independence.
🩹 Medical rest.
🏡 A predictable place that can go anywhere with you.

So many dogs are relieved to have a crate be offered to them or have one be a part of their training plan.

🛑STOP STICKING YOUR HAND IN YOUR DOGS FOOD BOWL!

There is a common misconception that if you put your hands in your dogs food bowl or mess with them when they are eating that you are preventing Resource Guarding.

It's the complete opposite! That will actually create Resource Guarding issues. Sticking your hand in your dog's food is harmful, not helpful.

Let them eat in peace!

If your dog is Resource Guarding, contact us at [email protected] and we can help.

From my friend and mentor Jess Feliciano.

Frosted glass cling can help make your life more peaceful when living with a reactive dog.

Part of training includes preventing opportunities to practice the very behavior that you don’t want - in this case it’s usually barking/lunging/growling at passerby’s. It is not realistic to be prepared to train every time someone walks by, and if you’re not in the vicinity, you also cannot train.

Blocking the visual either temporarily or long term allows the dog to stop practicing the behavior a million times a day, and puts a stop to any self reinforcement.
