Artist Wood English Springer Spaniels We are a responsible, small family breeder producing a litter a year. Our pups are of European and American bench lines. And suddenly I was "potty" training two.

m - whether with love, fear, or anger, that is what they will mirror. The first dog I ever fell in love with was a Springer Spaniel named Susie who was my Uncle Lou's dog as a boy. The age I first recall her is when I was about four or five and I loved to brush out her long feathers on her front legs and I was fascinated that she could drink from my grandparents outdoor faucet. My Uncle served in the Army and so Susie lived with my grandparents when he was deployed and Susie followed them as they gardened and were in their home. When my Uncle returned home, she was his dog and his hunting companion. From my Uncle, I learned that having a dog is a responsibility not to be taken lightly. From my Grandmother I learned they can break your heart, as I experienced her grief when Susie passed on. As a young adult, my first dog was a wonderful mutt, Benny, 75 pounds worth, brindled, and white. From him I learned how to care for a dog - and how to train one - how loyal they become - and how they are our "children". As a young mother with a one year old daughter, Buster, became my dog. A lab-something-something mix, he was sweet and gentle. He was my walking companion through woods and down country roads. Buster got me through some of the toughest times of my life. It was when my daughter turned 12 that two English Springer Spaniels in a row came into our lives! Sweet, nurturing Louie and amazing Maisey, from champion field-bred (hunting) lines. Originally we had hopes to breed Maisey but her tests came in negative, so she never became a momma. Maisey broke our hearts and left us New Year's Day 2016, at the age of 13 but right up to the end, her love of humans shown through. I am sure that she is seated by my father in heaven now, as she patiently did so at the end of his life. Louie passed on after 14+ loyal years, and I'm hoping he's joined my Uncle Lou and is running through the fields of heaven. Which brings us up to Addie - we added one more in the summer of 2012! With two elder dogs, it has been a wonder to have her energy and joy fill our lives. Addie, a show-bred English Springer Spaniel, was bred to Cynthia Gilliland’s handsome and talented Eero. With nine striking pups born on June 10, 2016. From these wonderful pups we kept Bella and her brother Charlie. In the Spring of 2019 we bred Bella back into her father’s line, Melanie Conrad’s wonderful European line of Waternymph Springer Spaniels. The rest, as they say, is now the future!

It's been pretty quiet in Vermont as with the rest of the world this Spring due to Covid-19. On the plus side, Addie, Bella, and Charlie are enjoying the frequent walks though they are not sure about the recent hair cuts I just gave them.

The groomers closed the day before we were set to bring them in. Our vets have reduced appointments. We just picked up both our anti-flea and tick medicines as well as our first order of dog food and biscuits curbside.

As you may know we breed back into the Waternymph Springer Spaniel line in Nova Scotia. So now that the U.S. —Canada border has closed AND due to the complicating factors in the U.S. (getting vet support, supplies, and not too mention the ability to properly socialize the pups with other folks), we've decided not to breed this Spring. We'll definitely miss having the puppies this summer running about but it is best to skip this season.

If you are still interested in a pup in 2021, do contact us to be included on our list.
Stay safe,
Ann

It’s coyote breeding season in the north east. Two nights ago, our Charlie was riled up by one of the packs by our house who were awfully close by. Today we saw a lone coyote cross the road by the iconic Williston Church. Here’s some info to protect your pets written by our friends in Canada & further below a news report on their urban & rural behavior.

“Attention: The next 4-6 weeks is mating season for Coyotes. One ploy of a Coyote is to get your dog to chase while others wait for your dog.... the outcome may be tragic. Coyotes may be out and around more now than normal.....often attracted to smells of urine, females in heat, new pups etc and given the opportunity, may attack your pet......Also, understand that the marking of urine by a female Coyote in season will attract and draw your male dogs out as well. Coyote breeding typically peaks in mid to late February/early March.
Gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male Coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, as will females with new cubs. The long and short of it all is that Coyotes may pose a risk to your dog and that risk increases during mating season and when cubs are emerging from dens. While creatures of opportunity and highly adaptable...remember, Coyotes are wild and as their natural environment is diminishing, they have no choice but to become more resourceful as we infringe on their home. Bottom line, protect your pets and respect wildlife.”

In the spring, coyotes are on the move seeking food, and may act more aggressively toward any animal they see as potential competition, like family dogs

Thought you all might want to see one of our former litter pups all grown-up at three YO. This is Ollie (not the puppies' Dad, Melanie's Oliver) but Bella and Charlie's brother, son of Addie and Eero. We had called him Georgie. Now he is wonderfully loved by Kristen.

Puppy number five, Orchid, now to be known as Zinnia just departed with her new folks on this beautiful fall day. He’s a retired veterinarian and is looking forward to walks in the woods with her. She does animal rescue. We try to pick the pups that best fit their new owners’ lifestyles. In holding her, he remarked, “This is the pup I would have picked for myself.” 😊

Puppies 3 & 4, actually first and last borne of the litter, Sienna and Violet, are now in the loving arms of their family in Idaho.
Jim and I loaded them up on a United flight with kind support from the folks at BTV who delighted in transporting them. Weeks before the flights however, Jim and I had been training them for travel - first acclimating to the crate, then to crates in motion by taking them on extended drives.
Wonderful Stephanie picked up her pups that evening. One of the wonderful parts of breeding a litter is establishing new relationships with future owners. Stephanie is a dog trainer, a kind person, and I feel fortunate that the pups are now hers. Photos are us saying goodbye, pups at airport, Stephanie receiving her new pups.

The pups meet Mollie and you can see how much they want to be a human’s one and only. This litter will be are so lucky as they have awesome homes to go to.

Last few days with the pups. Bella is no longer nursing even if the pups try she lets them know “No!”. She stills loves them, kissing them through the pens, playing with them in the yard, & helping me shepherd them from outdoor kennel to indoor play areas.

It’s really gratifying when your vet hopes you’ll repeat the breeding and thinks the pups are great. Not to mention all the love coming from 2 vets and 4 technicians. What a way to end a work week for them! Of course it was also our first car ride and we tested out a crate from one of our new families. When we got home, it was dinner then nap time. We promise a second post tomorrow with more pics! Waternymph English Springer Spaniels, Jim Reda Long Trail Veterinary Center

Friday morning sunshine means we go outside to play! Here we are playing with new toys! We like the crinkly ones that we can play tug of war with!
